I agree with @Essjay I do the silent cycle on all of my tanks and it works great just make sure you have some fast growing floating plants like hornwort, moneywort, pennywort, salvinia, frog bite and water sprite. These plants absorb ammonia at a higher rate and improve the quality of the water...

You could also add a snail or two but it is a very small tank. I have a guppy tank but it is a 30 gallon tank. Sorry about your other guppies.

Sorry about your fish and plants, sounds like a real disaster:( Your tank was looking nice, hope you will be able to get it back to the way it was without too much trouble. I don't blame you for wanting to get away for awhile, it has been a little crazy:shout:

I did not see my tetra fry until they were young juveniles, I still put then in a breeder box or they hid in hornwort I had floating in the tank. If you look at the picture you can see two waiting for me to feed them in the upper left corner. Over several months I would see one or two show up...

My guppies do not seem to eat their fry too. I have seen my platies (male) chase fry but not eat them.

I have 13 glow light teras, had 14 but just lost one, they are all well over 1 year old. The one I just lost may have been injured during feeding time. They seem much hardier than neon tetra. They look nice and get along with my other tetras just fine.

I do not hate you, I am just jealous of you and your luck with frog bite.;) The small amount I was sent started off good but then quickly disappeared. The snails or the fish feasted on it. I may try again and put it in it's own tank until it is large enough to survive.

I switched my 55 gallon tank from gravel to sand last year and I am happy with it. I have all live plants in my tanks and with plant taps they do just fine in sand.

I had mostly java and crested ferns but switched over to mostly anubias in my tetra tank. It seems to last longer and with it being a soft water tank it does seem to do better than the ferns. I also had to switch floating plants to salvinia. Tetras are soft water fish but guppies are hard water...
