I would not call him a fry any longer, he is a young adult, congratulations on him making it to adulthood.:drinks:

    What am I doing wrong?

Using Tetra Safe Start is one way to jump start your tank, I used it on helping out a friend who had a 20 tall and needed it done fast. It also works if your cycle breaks down due to things like medication. I just prefer the planted/silent cycle. It is a natural way to "cycle" your tank. I...

    What am I doing wrong?

I like rasboras, but I would avoid mixing any fish in with a betta sorority but you do have a lot of room in a 55 gallon tank.

    RIP Buster Gonad......a fine fish.

Sorry for your lost,:rip:but I had to laugh at the names of your guppies:cool:

    What am I doing wrong?

Both are very good at absorbing ammonia, my first tank that I tried a planted cycle was a 55 gallon tank. I had plenty of hornwort and anacharis. I ended up having 4 shoals of tetras along with a couple of cory. What type of fish do you plan on adding? Pictures of my first 55 gallon tank. Good...

    What am I doing wrong?

With a planted/silent cycle you rely on the plants to absorb all the ammonia. There will be no nitrates or nitrites to worry about because the plants absorb the ammonia and do not break it down like bacteria. I do planted cycles on all of my tanks. Having fast growing floating plants like...

    What am I doing wrong?

Do you have live plants in the tank? If you have enough live plants they will absorb the ammonia and you will have 0 readings. You would be doing a planted/silent cycle instead.

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

I still have one old mom and pop store near me but there are very few left in most cities within a few hours drive. :( My LFS does a decent job but the Petco and Petsmart stores have most of the business around here. I have been fish keeping on and off since the mid 80s and I have to agree with...

    Hello peeps new member

White Mountains in New Hampshire? they are beautiful, I lived near Portsmouth NH as a kid many years ago. Nice looking tank, I would suggest adding more plants like anubias and Java Ferns.

    White Cloud Fry

Cool ,thanks for sharing the pictures.:snap: I have been trying to have some tetra fry show up in my community tank again but no luck so far. I have everything I need to set up a 10 gallon fry tank just have to get around to it. I want to try ember tetras since they are so small. If I am lucky...

Betta Sorority (6 Month Update) (Comments/Advice/Guidance Welcomed!)

The frog bite looks good and will help with the water quality. I have a small amount in my 55 gallon tetra tank but it has not done much, I have mostly salvinia floating. @Huscarl86 does have a good point, your tank appears to be over stocked. Doing larger water changes every week can help...

Back After 15 Years - My New Tank

Hello and welcome to the forum fellow Viking :fish: :hi: :fish:You may want to look into Tetra Safe Start Plus, it has the correct bacteria to help jump start your tank. I do what is call a silent or planted cycle where I have enough plants to remove the ammonia. Good luck

A topic not commonly available to new fish keepers Re: water softeners

I would suggest that you look into a hard water test pen and a PH test pen. I use both when mixing my hard tap water with my RO water. I use a TDS-3 to test for hardness. It is very accurate and easy to use. I bought it online for around 10 USD. I use a ATC PH test pen which is also not very...

    Hi!

Welcome to the forum. I have moderately hard water but I like tetras so I keep a 55 gallon soft water tank using RO water to soften my hard water. I have a skoal of neon, ember and glow light tetras. I have several hard water tanks that I keep guppies and platys in. Fish will be healthier and...

New tank - added one Glofish Tetra - should I add more?

Moneywort, pennywort, hornwort, salvinia, frog bite, anacharis and water sprite are good choices for floating plants.
  37. Retired Viking

Hornwort was doing great, now barely hanging on to life

After several months my flaoting hornwort also turned brown and lost leaves, it had been a great place for the tetra fry to hide out in. I ended up putting the few surviving new parts in a tank I have by a bay window so it would get more light. I had it floating for over 6 months before it...
