I have noticed the temp creep over 30c, but have managed to cool the tank by using a fan.   My platties have been doing white stringy poo, but they have been doing that since I have had them, my guppies have never done white poo.

Hi, it doesn't smell and it doesn't foal or bubble at all. I did do that test. The ammonia has gone up, just not as much as I expected.

Evening all My ammonia has been around the 1ppm mark for 5 days now. Do I wait until its closer to 0, or should I top up to 3ppm?

Evening all. Just thought I'd give a little update on my cycle. Ammonia has been coming down very slowly over the last few days. It's is still about 1ppm-ish. Nitrites are still at 0. But nitrates have been going up. Current Y at 20ppm-ish. Slowly but surely things are happening.

I tested my nitrates today, they have gone from darkish purple (10 - 15) to light purple (5). Is this normal? I thought the only way to get rid of nitrates is to do a water change? Also I seem to have a time bit of algae in my tank, is that a good sign?

Last night when I tested my water, it showed the ammonia had come down a tad between 1ppm - 2ppm, nitrites still 0 and nitrates still between 10ppm - 15ppm it has been like this for 2/3 days. Is my cycle kind of going backwards. i.e I have plenty nitrate eating bacteria, but the ammonia eating...

Some good info here, I always added declor to buckets as I filled the tank, I always thought that if I put untreated water in the tank I'd kill off all the good bacteria.

Evening. Here are my readings for today. Ammonia just below 1, it's difficult to match the colour. Nitrite trace Nitrate trace I'm beginning to wonder if the mature media is doing anything or even if my tank is cycling?

That's what I thought, I am still dosing ammonia up to 1mg/l. At least things are happening this time.

Evening Here are my results after tonight's testing. Ammonia 0.2ish Nitrite 0 So would I be right in saying I have enough bacteria to process nitrite to nitrate and the ammonia to nitrite bacteria is playing catchup?

I did a water change on the 23rd. I have been dosing ammonia to 1mg/l everyday and testing every 24hours. I don't have any plants. Just gravel, a rock and ornament.

Evening all. I topped ammonia up to 1mg\l yesterday and here are my results tonight.... Ammonia 0.2 Nitrite <0.1 Nitrate <0.5 Looks like all the readings have dropped. Is that a good thing? I'm not to sure what to make of that.

Here are my results after yesterday's water change Ammonia 0.6ish Nitrite 0.1ish Nitrate 5 Ph 7.5 - 8 So it looks like the tank can't process 1mg/l of ammonia in 24 hours yet. Any course of action needed or just wait?

Right, so I done a decent water change yesterday. Chopped up the sponge I got from the LFS and fitted it in with my filter. When I tested the ammonia it was at 0.6mg/l. I topped that up to get 1mg/l. Do I know leave it and see how long it takes to get to 0? Or gradually build it to 4-5mg/l?

I have managed to get some matured filter sponges from the LFS, I will pick them up after work. I will cut them up and stick them in with my filter, is it still worth doing a water change?

darn it, I will change the water when I get back from work. I am also going to the lfs to see if I can get some mature media. After the tank has processed 1ppm ammonia, do I redose back to 4-5ppm?

Argh I didn't want to hear water change. I will do that tmrw after work. What would cause the cycle to stall? Too much ammonia?

It is between 7.5 - 8. It seemed to have had stalled earlier and I done a 50% water change then and made no difference. Is there anything else I could try?

Aquascaper I am using Nutrafin liquid test kit. As the ammonia isn't getting consumed, wouldn't that show that there is not enough bacteria?

I was wondering that, but wasn't sure. I haven't dosed biomature/ ammonia for almost 10 days. If the cycle was close to ending, wouldn't the ammonia be getting consumed?

I have not added any biomature today at all. I am following the instructions on the bottle. It says to stop adding biomature once I get 5-10 mg/l nitrite or ammonia, wait for it to drop to zero and fish.

Hi all Just took some readings today.. Ammonia 5 mg/l Nitrite 5 mg/l Nitrate 50 mg/l I haven't added any biomature today but have added bacterlife as per instructions. Does the cycle look ok?

I have tested my tap water and the nitrate is at 5mg/l. I have also retested my tank its definitely at 50mg/l. I am inclined to leave it as it is for now.
