    Green Sunfish Needs Help

Perhaps better photos of the wound would help but I don’t see a fungal infection. I would provide the best water quality, and just observe for now. It has only been a few hours. I would stop adding stress coat and any other things. They don’t help and can harm. If he recovers from having been...

Rummy nose tetras not swimming around

The apparent territoriality will disappear by having a larger group. Agree on the benefit of having a shoal of them.

    angelfish enlarged anus

Do you have only that one angelfish? That fish looks healthy as it can be. It’s ovipositor has descended and that is what is protruding. Poor thing if it is alone, but it looks healthy enough. Of course I could be wrong…..

    Mysterious patches on my tetras

I too keep Colombian tetras and have never seen that (on those fish or on any others). It seems odd that the black blotches seen to occur on both the body and fins (second photo). Very curious about it. The only remotely similar thing I have seen is something that seems to affect lemon tetras...

Can’t get rid of Cotton fin fungus

This has only marginally relation with the current fungal problem, which is not shown well in the photos. However, one other item to consider is that the substratum shown (large gravel) is not conducive to cories long-term health. Sand or sand/mulm mixture would be more suitable, and would make...

'I just held my breath:' Charter boat captain, first mate share close encounter with shark

That happening was just amazing! Asian carps jumping onto boats through the Mississippi River basin have been implicated in serious injuries to boaters, including broken bones. How many of those together would amount to the mass of a single large Mako shark? The people involved in that incident...

Request for feedback on stocking of a 10ftx4ftx22 inch aquarium

Unlike stated, flagtail Prochilodus would very rarely eat small fish, even smaller than cardinals; mine wouldn’t even eat newborn live bearers. Also, Anostomus would not eat cardinals; they may harass them but not eat live cardinals. Also, I currently keep both full grown flagtail x1, and...

The media yes (aquarium water). The casing, impeller and parts, any water. It doesn’t matter.

    Biggest fish for planted tank

What is the main plant in the second picture ? I believe it is a Hygrophila, but I don't know the species. Similar to Hygrophila "araguaia". To be honest, that is one plant that has done well for me, but whose id I have never been certain of. Self correction to my prior post - The flagtail is...

    Biggest fish for planted tank

It depends on what is meant by planted tank, whether a tank where some nice plantings are included, or a truly spectacularly landscaped tank, with very varied and detailed plantings including delicate species in high maintenance fashion. If the former, a number of large fish are possible. If the...

    Help identifying snail baby!

It is a physid, Physella cf acuta. Left coiling makes easy recognition. Note that it cannot be a trapdoor, as that implies the presence of an operculum (trapdoor), which this one lacks. Harmless but a nuisance.

Nice! Good for the hawk. If your neighborhood is anything like mine, there’s too many squirrels.

    Silver dollars and mbunas!

Welcome. What kind of silver dollars do you have, and how do their tank looks like? How long have you kept them? Cheers!

Lighting Specs—Do I Have Any Chance?

"The light looks reasonable but the silver dollar will eat any plants you put in there." Possible and likely but not necessarily so! There are many aspects to it, ranging from fish training, choice of plants, how to feed and care for the dollars, etc., etc. Two of my ongoing tanks.

Cloudy eye not responding to salt

If there is a bacterial infection involved (very possible), temp will not help and can be detrimental. I would consider an antibacterial such as Maracyn two. I am sure all the gurus will disagree.

Scientific institute classifies cats as 'invasive alien species'

I love cats and own two of them. But indoors. Outdoor cats are just too destructive. This recognition by the Polish institute is nice but is nothing new. However, hopefully it helps further the varios initiatives to control (read, eliminate) domestic but feral cats. Europe and the USA have been...

    Ich treatment didn’t work

I would agree with the benefit of heat, rather than the medicines used so far, which sound more like snake oil. And that does look like ich. With that shape of the end of the dorsal fin, my bet is that She is a She.

    Snail identification please?

I doubt it's an apple or mystery snail I'm like 95.001% sure it's a pest snail Apple snails are ranked among the worst agricultural and human health pest snails worldwide. But the suggested picture is what counts, not my guess or yours. Cheers!

    Snail identification please?

Too small a picture to see it well. If you detach the snail from the glass and post a picture of the other side (apertural view), it will show whether it has an operculum (trap door) or not. I suspect that is DOES. Regardless, this will allow to narrow down the possibilities and to provide a...

    Filter media question

Unless you are trying to remove medicine that was recently added, then there isn't a need for activated charcoal. Just a waste of money and space in your filter. Sure, you can replace with any other material if you have the space, there is never too much mechanical/bio media.

    New fish! Whoops, impulse buy...!

Beautiful Venezuelans! I have never had them, but would like to. Congrats! Even if they are just a color morph of C. aeneus, it may be a good idea not to cross breed them to keep both stocks pure.

    Green tiger lotus

I agree with DoubleDutch that the bulb in the photo looks more like an 'onion' (Crinum sp.) than like a lotus (Nymphaea). But I don't really know. Regarding conditions in my tank with the blooming red Tiger Lotus - I consider it High Flow, but heavy plant growth (see picture) baffle some of...

    Green tiger lotus

I do not know about the fuzz on the lotus in your picture. However, I can say that red tiger lotus (Nymphaea zenkeri) can be moved and that they are quite resistant to movement, even if it may not be best for them. I posted this in another forum, but reading your post, I thought it could be...

    Heat EMERGENCY!!!

If it serves to appease anybody... I would dare guess that most of the northern hemisphere, as well as much of the southern hemisphere's current air temperatures (and thus, the aquarium water as well) are very high right now, due to the crazy climate spell we are going through. My 5 active...

    Pop-up pond?

The ones I have seen (not the very one you showed) are alright for temporary use, and are more of a novelty than something one can rely for any extended time. The frames are not very durable, the plastic material relatively weak, and the viewable panes discolor (yellow) over time. Further, they...

Tank Tests OK But Something Not Right?

    Glass/ Plexiglass hood?

I ran onto the same situation several times before, because all my tanks have been bought used or put together from parts. What I have done is either of two things: 1) Purchase a glass lid (versa-top) that is just a tad shorter, but of the correct width. The width is not critical, because the...

    Air Stone change from Filter

If I understand correctly, it seems as if much of the beneficial bacteria in the old power filter media was removed when the old filter was removed. Some bacteria was probably left in substratum, decorations, etc., but perhaps not enough. Thus, you may be experiencing a new cycle and that may...
