Substitute for Topfin brand filter cartridge?

As suggested above, you can replace the cartridge with a modified, non-disposable version of your own creation. The one shown below is for a Penguin 350 filter (images at bottom left and center). However, through the years, I have done similar modifications for friends, on a number of brands of...

    Injured puffer

To be honest, it does not look good at all. What I would do is to separate it into a hospital tank (or separation within existing aquarium), and to observe for a few days, while maintaining absolutely pristine water quality, with nitrates as low as possible, and completely away from potential...

    Please help identify this fish?

It is indeed Leporinus granti. A very beautiful specimen. Not all Leporinus are bad, in fact, none of them are. They are simply not suitable to most home aquarium settings. Despite that, a number of people keep them successfully in large tanks. In nature, they are shoaling species, living in...

    Growth on pleco

The white growth shown looks to be a fungal infection, possibly upon an existing injury. These infections are sometimes very stubborn. If it were me, I would use methylene blue applied by dabbing onto the growth, followed by a topical anti fungal ointment. Because of the oily ointment, a close...

Can't find fish in my new tank

Accidental death of small fish being sucked into filter intakes can easily be avoided using pre-filters in all filter intakes. Easy, cheap (free if creative), and problem sold. Many options to explore amenable to just abut any setup. Sorry for your loss.

How to get rid of duckweed or stop it getting pushed under water by filter flow

A floating corral works well. This corral was for years in a 75g (tank 48x18x21") filtered with an FX6 + an AC110 (both with pre-filters). The corral was sufficient to impede floaters to get into filters or to be knocked about. Cheers!

    Substrate what should i do

One thing to consider is that sand is much easier to maintain clean, as poop and debris tend to stay on top, making it easy to remove dying water changes. Gravel allows more to go between grains, downwards, making harder to remove. Otherwise, as suggested above. Good luck.

They are not spores, but packets of spores. They are called sorae. The spores are quite small.

fish that are fun but compatible with angelfish?

Lemon tetras (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis). They are beautiful, active, somewhat schooling, peaceful and large enough not to be eaten by the angels. When in largish groups (10 and above, the more the better) they show very interesting group dynamics. They are also inexpensive and easy to find.

Glowfish - What are they/how do they get the colour ? Are they only in USA

I don’t like them at all. In my mind (I don’t want to impose this on anybody), they are together with the short bodies, balloons, long finned, and even albinos. And hybrids. I fully appreciate this is against the grain of many people, but it is how I perceive it.

    Hu'lu/bottle gourd/calabash as DriftWood?

I think Byron misunderstood the question, as the OP was asking about using squash gourds as driftwood, such as for caves, etc., not as food. The answer is still the same - No, it is not so good. After a while t softens and eventually rots, albeit takes longer than fresh squash. It can a last a...

    Blue green slime survey

Interesting topic, and frustrating issue in aquaria. I currently have 8 running tanks, and have issues with cyano in only one, despite the substrata, maintenance routines etc. being similar in all tanks. I did have issues with cyano in the initial period of 3 tanks (first months after setup)...

    Aqua Clear 20

I do the opposite- No floss at all, and no disposable stuff (including floss). Sponges all the way, and ceramic rings (in bags) in some filters, not all. All tanks have at least 2 filters. Sponges are squeezed in tank water weekly, and all filters have pre-filters that are also cleaned weekly.

    Net dip

2 points- I misspoke. Methylene blue is not that nasty, but I can't use it because I am strongly allergic, plus I hate how it stains things, aquarium silicone and acrylic included. I prefer bleach (of course not full strength....duh). However, my main point remains - why using a single net for...

    Net dip

Fish nets are very inexpensive. Why not having dedicated nets for QT tanks versus other tanks (healthy or not questionable)? Even more if needed? On the other hand, Methylene blue is nasty and dangerous, specially storing it long term. Bleach is nasty but way less dangerous.

Molly’s Caudal Fin Seems Paralyzed and Body in S-Shape

Low temperature IS an anesthetic. Small volume of water, just to cover fish, freezer, just a few minutes. Radishes may suffer too. But it is all good.

Molly’s Caudal Fin Seems Paralyzed and Body in S-Shape

Did you suggest a better method. Most of the text in the article you quoted agrees it is a comparably quick and lesser suffering methods. All ears for your better method.

Molly’s Caudal Fin Seems Paralyzed and Body in S-Shape

Sorry to say, there is no cure for that. Best is eutanasia. An easy way is to place the fish in a cup and put in the freezer. After a little while, it can be dispose of. Sorry for your loss.

    HOB dampening

The easiest way is the old cutout splastic soda bottle trick. Will not reduce flow, but it will diffuse it to the sides so it does not do damage to fragile fish or plants. Works with all HOB brands. Search for that in this site, as I have posted pictures before (I would attach one here but I am...

Aquatic Projects for the New Year

I will be resealing a new to me, 125g glass tank, and old Perfecto brand. I already made a nice stand, but on testing (of course in basement), it leaked. Bummer, but it is just a delay to add to the intrigue. Will be the third six footer in the basement.

How often do you check the water temperature?

I have stick on thermometers outside all tanks - they give me the ballpark I need at a glance. Somewhat inaccurate? - good enough for my needs. Sticky residue? - not unless I remove them and there is cleaning if that happens. For water changes (more accuracy needed) - I have a laser thermometer...

    Quarantine New Fish

I am sorry for your loss. I would consider something (below) for future fish acquisitions you may wish to do- I am curious about this: "I know the tank was fully cycled as I had tested it for several days prior to adding the fish and each time amon 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 40, PH 7.8. " So the QT...

    rinsing bio in tap?

Whether the bacteria die or not is nearly irrelevant. And of course there is lots of bacteria in all aquarium surfaces, not only in the filter media. However, I am with Slaphppy7 - why bother to risk it? Thinking of it, for me it is actually more work to walk to a sink and rinse there, than to...

    Deficiency?

"The brown in the leaf is narcosis (dead plant tissue)." I am pretty sure NECROSIS was meant, not narcosis (a state of stupor), which does not happen to plants, so far as it is known. Otherwise, you are receiving excellent suggestions. I agree that the issue may resolve itself with some time, as...

Any suggestions for low light plants that grow tall?

Cryptocoryne usteriana. Once established, it does not require high light. Grows very tall, bending over 5-6 inches in 21” high tank. Colonizes bottom (runners) readily.

40G Marineland Breeder Glass Tops ~ Where to Find?

Yes. Just have a piece of glass cut and glued it to the frame; you can do it on top, or underneath. Underneath is better because that way the glass top sits perfectly on the top of the tank, instead of not sitting flush. If you prefer, it does not need to be glued; it can just sit n top, but you...
