I've not seen this filter before... are they new??? have you tried one??? are they any good???

+1 about having uniformity of filters across one's set of aquaria. I try to be uniform but do have a bit or a smorgasboard at this time - In current use, 3 canisters (2 FX6 and one Hydor 450), 13 AC (8 110, 1 70, 4 50) and 1 Penguin 350. Having the ability of quickly exchanging parts or media...

Do amazon swords need Root tabs? Or can they be fine with no fertilizer/Leaf zone?

I don't know what kind of "mess with root tabs" is being alluded to. I use API root tabs (1-2 times per year), and have been doing it for decades. I also use SeaChem Flourish Comprehensive (sparingly, after each weekly water change). The root tabs may not be strictly necessary, but I do feel...

save the world single handedly... well no, but looking for responsible use of RO waste water

It is very wasteful. Much of the world, including much of the USA has been and will continue to be in a water availability crisis. If one must do RO or RODI, two guidelines that are almost always good recommendations are 1) don't run the RO from the "softened" water line, but from the raw water...

lots of talk about aquarium pumps lately... is there a recommended output / gallon???

The amount of oxygen released by bubbles into the water is still negligible when compared to the gas exchange caused by the surface agitation and convective motion of the total volume of water. In addition, the bubbles are not oxygen, but air.

lots of talk about aquarium pumps lately... is there a recommended output / gallon???

"I don't necessarily think a fine mist adds more oxygen... IMO, it would be the surface area of the bubbles... so if a pump is putting out a set amount of air, I have no idea if 1000 tiny bubbles has more actual surface area than 100 bigger bubbles ( discounting the oxygenation from the surface...

    Algae

I was referring to the brown/rust colored algae on the Java fern.
  10. F

    Algae

Not good. However, among algae, it is not one of the worse ones. It rubs-off easily between fingers, usually without damage to the blades, and then can be vacuumed off the bottom. A combination of mechanical attack and ascertaining its causes should take care of it completely.

    Snail Care: Cracks in Shell

That is not a Mystery snail (family Viviparidae). Instead, that is an Apple snail, family Ampullariidae. Related but quite different. Those are not cracks on the shell. Those are cracks on the peristracum (a layer of mostly organic material, conchyolin, which covers the shell, and of course is...

Jaguar Cichlid (4M) - doesn't seem to want to eat

I am glad that the fish has eaten and that problems may be partly resolved. Stray voltage may have something to do but other factors almost certainly do as well. You have been given good advice. For the long term (as in these fish can live many years!), you should consider some important changes...

Oscar fish - just died, tank-mates OK?

Sorry for your loss. I can’t offer insight on the reason for the death. However, I encourage you to seriously consider the mid to long term of your fish. Oscars in good conditions grow very fast, and get quite big. Not only they need space, but they like to modify their space, and are somewhat...

    Canister Advice

I have not had a PennPlax canister, but what I have heard of them is positive and they have good reviews. I currently own two Fluval cans but over the years have had Eheim, Marineland, Odyssee, Fluval canisters. I have never heard or read the terms head, or head bearings applied to canisters...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Very nice tank and fish! In my experience, 4-5 years is about the maximum life span of boesemani rainbows. I still have descendants of my first pair, full adult themselves and breeding for at least 2-3 years now. The old male began deteriorating after 41/2 years, becoming less colorful and...

    Silver dollar emergency

Good it is now clear it is a water problem. Clean water may be all is needed but a close eye to any other issues continues to be necessary. Good luck!

Side of aquarium cracked is it a concern?

It is not pretty, but I think you will be alright. Being a small tank, not that much pressure. Definitely keep an eye, but it may be fine indefinitely.

    Silver dollar emergency

Unfortunately can’t tell on the basis of info available. Perhaps it became spooked and crashed hard against the wall? Important to maintain good observation about anything off with the other ones. And to maintain the absolutely best water quality possible in both tanks until more evidence shows...

    More Nerite Snail Eggs

Regarding who laid the eggs, unfortunately only direct observation (I.e, seeing the snail doing it) is the only way. And then, you will know that snail’s gender forever. Unlike rams horns and pond snails which are simultaneous hermaphrodites (both genders in each snail), nerites are separate...

    living thing

It is possible but I don't believe so. These things are mainly carnivorous, eating tiny ciliates and other small forms. All those cells are of one type/size/color (green ones) and then similar to that the white ones.
  21. F

    living thing

I don't believe those are eggs or larvae. Instead, I believe those are algal cells. As corals, these things have a facultative symbiotic association with algae. They can survive without them but will do better with them. But I truth I don't know for sure. I see similar sized white and brown bodies.

    living thing

Not Hydra (genus Hydra), but yes a hydrozoan (Hhylum Cnidaria). Very cool! It should not be a problem unless very abundant, and only to the smallest of fry.

    Problem with my tank

I am not familiar with these products - Sera Aquatan and Toxivec I assume Aquatan is a water conditioner (dechlorinator). What is Toxivec and why do you use it? "After an consultation I started using Omnipur A" "I went to the vet and they said that I should start Bactopur, if Omnipur wasn't...

    Pre-Feeding Time

Yeah, a bit of a way. I used to work at a school in Providence while living in SMass. Years back. There were a couple of good stores in Prov., and a couple between there and home. I am happy where I am, but miss the older times some, including my Discus and the Boston Aquarium Society. Yes, I do...

    Pre-Feeding Time

The video quality is really not bad at all. Most of the fish can be seen well (i.e, with good focus) at least a few times. They are fast, and you are positioned at an angle, which does not help, but the result is better than a number of videos I have seen. Your fish look healthy. Your (single)...

    Help Needed

Most freshwater snails can pass parasites to fish (and to other vertebrates, including humans). They are intermediate hosts for a wide array of parasites, in various invertebrate groups. The snail does NOT need to die to release colonizing bodies of the parasites. I do not know what animal is...

    Aqueon tanks?

I have had a 125g for ~6 years, and I purchased it used with its [not that great] laminated pressboard stand. Supposedly it was 2 years old. I have been very happy with the tank and have had no issues.

    from the good old days...

Regarding the Oddysea - Yes, I agree. They do make at least one larger model, I have never seen it. However, the quality of the small one (I have one) is very low, and although available and usable, I don't really recommend it. That does not leave much hope for the larger models but I don't know...

    from the good old days...

I used to have several Magnum Hot 250s, and also the Pro version (same thing, with two biowheels attached). Excellent filters that I used mostly for 'polishing' my discus tanks. Then I quit the hobby due to moving and sold many tanks, fish and equipment, only to re-start again about 10 years...
