    Question on S. repens

In my experience, yes, they will produce roots while floating. It can take a few days to weeks, depending on conditions, but it is nor that fast. One thing they don't like and would slow the process, is to be thrown about by the outflow of a filter. I find that it helps to remove some of the...

Visited the Silver Springs state park!

Very nice. I like your were able to get pretty close to the Anhinga (I believe that what it was, but only the back can be seen), or was is a Cormorant? (does not seem so). "I bet it's a nightmare doing weekly water changes." - Actually pretty easy. Automated, all by themselves, and daily.

Need advice about chloramines in my tap, Hypancistrus L260's!

Although Seachem does not disclose their 'secret' agent, the likelihood is extremely high that it is the same as used by API and most others - Sodium thiosulphate. It would just be too expensive to use almost anything else. But of course they want to keep it secret.

    Aquarium Maintenance Routines?

I currently have 6 tanks, 1x 125g, 1x 110g, 2x 75g, and 2x 40g. All my tanks are planted, and all have PFS (pool filter sand) as substratum, except for the two 40g, which have bare bottoms as I use them as QT tanks (but have plants too!). I do weekly water changes, ~ 75-80%, together with...

That is an impressive clown loach (can't see more than the face of the other, quite a bit smaller). GLWSale!

Please help me identify this fish

Those are very nice fish, their fins a little bit tattered but very nice and showing good color even while being in the plastic bag. If you were able to offer good conditions in your tank, they may be looking spectacular by now! ...."Silver Dollars Metynnis argenteus as @Byron says. Keep them...

Now Are We Sure About This?- Fish Id

Very old post, but in the interest of keeping the record straight and helping with future searches .... The fish shown is a young male Metynnis altidorsalis. A mature male showing off its colors below (from my tank). Cheers!

    Possible Ick on Cory Cat

If I see that I know I have ick. By the time they have on the body like that, their gill filaments have had it much more for at least a couple of days. Interesting because Cory’s often don’t show it the body as often as other fish. Do you have other fish. Was any new fish introduced recently...

    Red external sack

Something else is going on as well. The fins (dorsal, caudal and anal) haven nipped quite a bit. Who are the tank mates?

    Deformed-very skinny guppy

I am sorry to say, that poor guppy has no hope, and will not get back to any good. The safest part is that it can stay like that for a long time. It needs to be humanely euthanized.

Is this White spot on Green Neon Tetra?

I wrote before reading about the dead fish. It sounds as if there is an issue of water quality, which needs to be improved regardless. Again, Good luck!

Is this White spot on Green Neon Tetra?

That does not look to me like white spot (aka ick). Instead, it looks more like a secondary bacterial/fungal infection, possibly occurring on top of a pre-existing physical injury (scratch or similar). It it were my tank/fish, I will do either of two things: 1- Treat with a dual (gram + and...

    I'm failing

The problem was adding new fish to your nice, running tank, without quarantine. Never a good move. I am very sorry. If it were me, I will dose with salt (any kind except Epsom salt), and observe. Water changes (50% or so) every other day, replacing the salt. It should take care of it, but there...

    EBA killing cardinal tetras

Blue acaras will be aggressive and with tendency to eat substantially smaller fish no matter what. Neons and similar are just too small not to be eaten. Depending on the size of your tank, a couple of options (you seem to want tetras, which are a good idea) could be red eye tetra (Moenkhausia...

What should I do with these fish?

This is a somewhat older post, so actions were likely already taken. In case they were not, and just for general benefit of any others, I say this: "To make things worse, my dad wants to go to the fish store tomorrow to buy some red hook silver dollars as well as a bunch of tiger barbs (the...

How Would You Describe Yourself ?

I must be as fish nerd. I have been around fish and aquaria all my life, starting by helping my mother with her fish/tanks (many!) nearly 6 decades ago. I have had many tanks but never real big ones (largest was a 150g), and now the largest is 125g. I do want a big one (300g or more), but I...

What do you think of the soft plastic 1,000 gallon pond?

The ones I have seen are not very durable (with and without viewable panels). So although comparatively inexpensive, they are not as good or as long term solutions as one may think.

I thought I would share this with everyone!

I used to be a member of the Boston Aquarium Society and participated in their regular meetings and auctions, as well as others events elsewhere, as you described. That is among the best ways to meet good people, learn stuff, get high quality plants/fish and sometimes hardware, usually for very...

    new planted tank

If the photo above is of your first tank, then you are a master and you don't need any help, just encouragement to continue! And certainly congratulations. It is gorgeous and well controlled (as judged by the well trimmed Java moss and overall look). I use PFS (pool filter sand) and I like it...

    Is an FX6 enough?

Thank you! The big Crypts are C. usteriana. They do quite well, but need to be kept on check as they try to overtake everything, and by bending over at top, shade out other plants. But they do reward with good growth with minimal effort.

    Is an FX6 enough?

This is the way I see it. I have 2 6 foot tanks (125g and ~115g), both fairly well planted, and each has 1 FX6 + 1 Aquaclear 110 + 1 Penguin 350. Both tanks are well stocked but not particularly heavily, and both get a ~70% water change weekly. All filters have prefilters attached (my own...

    Shrimp with angel fish?

The risk is when the shrimp molt. If caught by a large and inquisitive adult angel (or any largish fish for that manner), it can quickly become a snack. Otherwise larger shrimp should be okay. So having plenty of hiding places (with small crevices) would reduce the risk of becoming snacks.

    Asian Water Moss

The mites are fairly harmless. I am sure they affect the plant some but generally not enough to affect them much. They are relished by fish that prey on micro bugs. My angelfish are always hunting for them and it is fun to watch them because to catch them they have to get them at the air-water...

This is clearly not up to date, nor specvific to your part of NC, but it may serve you as a start... though probably you have seen it. - https://fins.actwin.com/dir/clubs.php?c=1&r=43 Usually the better LFSs should be able to give you leads to groups in their area.
