Congratulations connorlindeman! Awesome tank and photo.

having problems with a FX4 filter

Nice work with the stand. Looks much nicer. I have the exact same tank/stand (Aqueon), except my stand was all black. I consider the tank as good quality, but not the stand, although I am currently using it. I did place it on top of a well braced 2x4 frame, just so that it is off the ground, to...

Sounds as if you know what to do and are doing it well. Congrats on the breeding spree(s) and good luck!

Aquarium volume Q's, am I overstocked?

All calculators just give approximations, and some attempt to match the results to ‘standard sizes’. Items such as thickness of the glass, external vs internal measurements and others add to not being exact. Thus, results such as 30, or 34, 37 gal, etc can be explained without feeling the...

having problems with a FX4 filter

Many thanks. I am still new to this forum, but have had fish and aquaria for >5 decades. I might submit sometime. I have seen other contests where I could not enter (bettas, nano tanks, up to [small size]). My smaller tanks are 40g. Cheers!

Redoing sealant- how to cure faster?

As suggested, it takes several days, 1-2 weeks (minimum 7 days). Not worth rushing it, and having to regret it will be such as drag + a lot of extra work and money. Although I have not used this very adhesive, I know of people who have, and consider it one of the best. I have used GE 1.

having problems with a FX4 filter

Impellers (not impellOrs) in Fluval FX filters (FX 4, 5, 6) do NOT just last a year. I have 2 FX6s, one since 2017, the other since 2019. I have never changed an impeller or had to buy a rebuild kit, and both filters continue to work beautifully. I am not sure what is wrong, and what I suggested...

History on the point of a spade

Not archaeological and very disturbing... but FWIW. My daughter and I, while walking our dog, found a hand gun concealed among bushes in front of a house in our neighborhood. We reported it to the police, who said they will come and requested that I remained available for further info, despite...

    Random snail

Essjay is correct - That is a Physid snail (Physidae), or pond snail. Harmless except for reproducing like crazy. What Colin_T refers as two types (coiling one way, or the other), is also true. Among snails of that shape, dextral ones (coiling to the right) are in the family Lymnaeidae, whereas...

"There were some old buildings used as part of a seawall around here, and there are a lot of bricks that remind me of seaglass, in that the tides have rounded them and made them look like natural objects. I'll keep an eye out for any with writing." Thank you GaryE. It would be cool just to...

    Other hobbies

I collect BRICKS with writings on them (construction bricks and similars). Most are historic, and the majority range late 1900's to recent, but I do have a couple thought to be from late 1800's. Most are from various states in the USA, but I do have a couple from Europe. In the picture, part of...

    Worms? What to do?

Yes, I would say you are heavily overfeeding. No need to feed twice daily, particularly for (mainly) carnivores (oscars, acaras). I feed 4 times per week only and works well for me. For my (mainly) herbivores such as dollars, I still feed only 4 times per week, but they get hanging pieces of...

Discus with indented/sunken belly but he is eating

Nice fish and tank. Almost certainly internal parasites (worms), possibly in combination with reduced feeding from being the lowest in the group's pecking order. The fish is extremely thin, and shows typical razor-thin forehead, indicating malnutrition and generally declining health. It does not...

Cory with wound and fuzzy growth, worms in tank

I agree with all advisement given. But.... while cories may not be as salt tolerant as many other fish, most cories do take salt just fine, within reason, if needed. What is critical is stopping ASAP all tissue degeneration from the fungal infection, and lower the fungal load in the tank (salt...

What has made this print in the algae

Those are the traces of the raspings of the snail's radula upon the film of algae on the glass. The radula is like a conveyor belt 'tongue' full of individual teeth in rows.

Cory with wound and fuzzy growth, worms in tank

I don't know pf a better id for the worm than "insect larva". My belief is that that worm had nothing to do with the injury on the cory, and that most likely came with the plants which were recently added. Although undesirable and ugly looking, I doubt it is harmful as is. Regarding the cory -...

    Brown algae

Agree. I find effective to use a toothbrush to brush it off, followed by siphoning out as much of the dislodged stuff as possible. It may come back a few times, but eventually will be forgotten.

Insects on floating plants and support bar??

Most likely springtails. Harmless, really. I have them in my frogbit floating corrals. Some fish eat readily those (few) they can catch. https://extension.umn.edu/nuisance-insects/springtails

    Cutting rhizome plants

I cannot say about Bolbitis, but can speak about Anubias. It is possible, and sometimes it is the only option possible. The plant will not be happy, but generally will eventually put out new fronds. I am siren it is possible to kill it by cutting too much into the rhizome. But constant attack...

    First car?

My first car was a 1969 VW bus, Westfalia camper true and true, white. I bought it in 1990. No rust, or minimal, bought in South Carolina. I fixed it up very nice. Went real fast (downhill), slower otherwise. Lots of fun. Several years until I had to relocate and sold it.

    Tannin's

What is it you are fighting? Minor water discoloration? It is harmless! Water changes will gradually solve it. Nothing to do, nothing to solve. What kind of fish do you have/want to keep? Most fish don’t mind it and many like it.

    Plant identity??

Agree on a Cryptocoryne. A number of the large species look like that (balándose, usteriana, and others). Looks happy. Good for you.

    Ich and snails

The snail does not transmit ich. However, any water with the snail, even trapped inside can contain ick larvae. Placing the snail in another tank prior to at least 10 days past recovery from ick in a tank is a risk.

    Changing filter media

Although my favorite HOB filters are Fluval Aquaclears, this is what I use inside filters that use "disposable" cartridges, thus becoming non-disposable and permanent. The cartridges in the photos have been in use for years, rinsed weekly. I prefer to continue to use the plastic frame of the...
