Newest Additions - my first Caridina

The new thing for me has been my Caridina cantonensis tiger shrimp. One of my favorite online shrimp breeders had a sale and I could not resist. I just wanted to share some pictures of my new little beauties.

🐠 TOTM VOTE NOW - December 2023 Tank of the Month Contest (16 gal & smaller)

This is my 3 gallon TopFin Shrimp & Fish Oasis aquarium home to 3 tiny ramshorns and 3 Caridina cantonensis (tigers). This little kit included a sponge for the filter end of the provided HOB. The HOB filter is weak enough to not disturb a betta and is perfect for my little shrimp. TDS 118...

    I need help

What might help you keep it clean though is to wipe it daily with a clean cotton rag, like an old wash cloth or something. A paper towel might be more abrasive but you could use that too.

Pets at home plant hitchhikers? Ghost shrimp baby photos anyone ?

Those look like baby neocaridina on the sponge filter. The other thing you may be seeing might be an amphipod. They're tiny but baby shrimp are tinier than adult freshwater amphipods.

    I need help

Those are likely just mineral deposits due to water composition and there isn’t anything you can do to prevent that. All aquariums will get that kind of build up. You can try turning the aerator down and if you can’t turn it down you can try knotting the line so that it slows the bubbles down...

    Tank leveling! help!

I put the styrofoam under the cabinet-style tank stand and on top of the hard surface. In one instance I have a 5.5 gal on top of an actual cabinet and in that case I have a much thinner piece of styrofoam under the tank itself and above the table top. I have done this with my aquariums for...

    Tank leveling! help!

I set my tanks on top of a piece of styrofoam about an inch thick. I get squares of the foam at the craft store. The idea is that the water will level itself and it seems to work here with my tanks. I would also put that tank on a hard floor and get it off the carpeting, especially if it...

    Shrimp Diet?

I have a 5.5 gal tank with a couple dozen cherry shrimp, amphipods and micro crabs, plus all sorts of other tiny critters/pests. No fish in this tank. I give mine a variety of foods. I grow hair algae and moss in a jar in the window and add some to their tank once in a while. They are given...

Shrimp in 29 gallon community tank-help

I also have a 29 gallon tank, purchased used already with inhabitants. There is 1 angelfish, 3 kuhli loaches, 1 SAE, and 5 neons. I also wanted to try shrimp and didn’t want to wait for these inhabitants to live out their lives so I picked up a 5 gallon tank just to keep neocaridina, amphipods...

    Corydoras

Be careful about using salt with cories. They don’t tolerate salt well.

    Water changes

I saw a video experiment where I man tested distilled water, distilled water with crushed argonite that sat for a few days, and a cup of water with tea tannins. The distilled water was next to zero and the distilled water with tea tannins were close to 80. So apparently yes, the tannins do add...

    Water changes

Yes, I use RO water and remineralize it when I do a water change to attain my target TDS. I add water with a TDS around 160 to 180. When I top off evaporation I just add straight RO water. Yes, fertilizer will increase nitrates and TDS in the aquarium. When you have a planted tank you want...

How to get biofilm off of wood?

I have shrimp, snails, amphipods, and micro crabs in my little 5.5 gallon aquarium and I use a regular turkey baster to change water and suck muck off the bottom of the tank. Biofilm is not an issue in that tank as many of the inhabitants feast on biofilm. New driftwood can get that thick...

Clear layer forming on top of cycling tank

I have a floating plant corral (ring) to hold my floaters in one place and it gets a film on the surface in the circle. I have a bubbler in the tank and an AquaClear 50 filter, but the tank is an open top tank. I live on a dirt road and it seems that road dust gets into the house and covers...

    Corydoras

Sounds like the fish is stressed. Here are some things to consider. Does the cory have any other cories now to hang out with? Is this cory eating and swimming around as would be normal (as opposed to just staying in one spot, not eating, etc.). Is there another fish in the tank picking on...

    Water changes

I used to change weekly but sometimes I can’t due to my job. For example, I’ll be gone from 9//24 to 10/10 and won’t be able to do any water changes. I’m always testing the water, including a TDS meter. I keep things monitored and in great shape.

    Cabomba shedding

Those plants like high light and the stems can be rather fragile. If you have active fish or ones that like to root around, they might be beating your plants up a bit.

    Uninvited guest

I love the snails and keep them in all of my planted tanks….Nerites, bladder, and ramshorn. Never ever (over 25 years) have I had the need to eradicate them, although in the distant past I did use to toss some in for my goldfish to eat. It was more for nutritional variety for my goldfish than...

    Water changes

Just throwing in my two cents…. I change water about once a month, roughly 25% in most of my tanks which are lightly populated (70%) and heavily planted. I feed the inhabitants lightly every other day. The only deaths I’ve had recently was a 3 day power outage in the winter before we got our...

    Breeding corydoras

Years ago I had a bronze cory explosion in a 46 gallon bowfront tank in which I kept a blue gourami as well as guppies. I did nothing special to get these cories to breed. When the 12 or so cories that I had got old enough, and I just happened to do a water change with slightly cooler than...
