Copepods in Shrimp Tank - Should I be concerned?

Thank you Collin_T, I guess I’ll have to think twice about tossing in a fish to whittle down the population then.

African water fern(?) growing shoots with roots from a leaf, answers?

Perhaps, but I have heteroclita, not the kind you mentioned.

    Intro for new member

Welcome to the forum, this is a great bunch of people here. Everyone is very helpful and eager to share their experiences. I’m no fan of social media, but there are FB groups that trade and offer free fish rehoming that you might have some luck with. Maybe there is one for your area of...

Copepods in Shrimp Tank - Should I be concerned?

I’m well aware of the cautions against keeping amphipods in a shrimp tank, but what about copepods, cyclopods, and the like. Has anyone experienced an issue impacting shrimp population or health with an over abundance of those creatures in the aquarium? I’ve considered letting a single...

African water fern(?) growing shoots with roots from a leaf, answers?

Yes, I’m fully expecting to have to remove lots of pups, and possibly the whole plant at some point, easy to do since it is glued to a rock. It isn’t supposed to get much taller than it already is (6”) and so far it hasn’t breached the surface. That isn’t the only possible issue I’ll have in...

Aufwuchs ( can I say that here ) "Biofilm" anyone actually tried to increase the growing of it in your tanks???

When I was in a hurry to start a brand new 3 gal tank for some shrimp that were on their way in the mail, I sprinkled Bacter AE on the inert small gravel substrate before I filled the new tank with water. It seemed to help get things started and give them something to graze on when they...

What kind of Anubias is this

You can leave the leaves float if you want. They probably won’t do much for you though. These plants are ephiphytes that can be glued to hardscape. I put a small dot of glue on a small stone and pressed a portion of the rhizome against it and then plopped it into my little aquarium.

What kind of Anubias is this

That is a bolbitis, probably the one they call El Niño Fern in some big box chain stores. I’ve got one in my 3 gallon aquarium too.

African water fern(?) growing shoots with roots from a leaf, answers?

I’ve got a bolbitis in a 3 gallon (9 inch square) aquarium and pups are always breaching the water surface so I pull them off and drop them in my plant scrap container of water that sits on my window sill, or I toss them in another aquarium. Eventually I’ll attach them to some hardscape and if...

I use Bacter AE to help jumpstart biofilm in my shrimp aquariums.

Newest Additions - my first Caridina

It has been 49 days with 2 berried shrimp in my 3 gallon unheated aquarium and today was the day!! I saw 2 babies this morning. The females are still berried, so the fun is just beginning. I am looking forward to watching them grow and color up.

    Lower PH

You can lower pH with botanicals such as catappa leaves (it is recommended to use 1 leaf per 5 gal and then check your pH), catappa bark, birch cones, casaurina cones, alder cones, and dry leaves such as oak, birch, beech, nettle, and so much more. If you put some driftwood in and the water...

    Thai Micro Crab

I am so excited to say I just saw one of the Thai Micro Crabs, probably the only one left in the tank. I was rearranging a small driftwood pile and there was one micro crab holding on below. I’ve only seen it twice in the past 8 months. I thought they were all gone and it would be safe for me...

    Plants and nitrate

https://www.aquariumnexus.com/aquarium-plants-reduce-nitrates/ It is usually the fast growing plants that use up the most nitrates, but this webpage mentions others which aren’t the fastest growers such as java fern, crypts, and anubias. The article also goes on to suggest other ways besides...

    Increasing filter

Add a second filter or buy a filter with a larger capacity for floss and sponges. Is that what you’re asking? Or how to increase the biological filtration in your existing filter? Well, if that is the question, you could add additional floss to the filter box, or more sponge. You can find...

    Google experts

I also have a business and was using Google Ads. They need to “verify” your business and they wanted my home/business address. I am not a brick and mortar store front, I travel to my client’s homes and perform services there. I do not wish to have my home address out there as I do not want...

Newest Additions - my first Caridina

It has been 6 weeks and I am still waiting for the babies to hatch. I’ve heard these shrimp can take 50 days to hatch. I’m sure my keeping the tank at room temp (68F) plays a role. I am anxiously awaiting.

New tank tannins/foaming bubbles/no fish yet

I have an open top aquarium and I sometimes get bubbles that accumulate near the filter from time to time. A good gravel vacuum and water change can help, and I have been known to drop a paper towel onto the surface and then pull it up, removing some of those bubbles too. It could be protein...

    New shrimp tank

I’m sure you will enjoy your new shrimp. Expect your first berried female a couple of months after you introduce them to your tank, unless you get lucky and acquire one already berried. That seems to be about average for me when I add new shrimp to a new tank. Are you going to do tap water or...

    Do you have Cherry Shrimp?

I add a lot of botanicals to my tank. I put the leaf litter up front and I drop the food down inside of a straw, using that straw to guide where I want the food to fall……right on top of the leaf pile. I do usually cut the leaf up into an inch or two square as those indian almond leaves are so...

    Do you have Cherry Shrimp?

I have been keeping cherry shrimp in a 5.5 gallon aquarium going on two years now. I was also keeping scuds in the tank which I’ve almost got eliminated now, but they were preventing my population from growing, eating newly molted adults as well as new soft little babies. Now that I’ve been...

Asking anyone with planaria experience to help!

From what I understand No Planaria does work well, even in shrimp tanks, although you will lose your snails. I use a glass planaria trap baited with frozen blood worms (thawed) and I leave it in overnight. You can do this for as many nights (with new bait) as you want. I also use a turkey...

I am still waiting for my 2 berried females to release babies, but most of the 10 shrimp in this tank are visible in this one picture, including the one orange-eyed blue tiger which must have been an accident. I wouldn’t mind dropping in 5 more OEBTs.

Does anybody keep kuhli loaches and corydoras together?

I usually drop in a Hikari, sinking wafer for my kuhli loaches once the lights go off in my aquarium. I’m not sure the cories would compete too much with the loaches as long as there is enough hiding places for everyone. I find that my Siamese algae eater is the one that bothers my cories. It...

Can anubius be propagated through leaves alone?

Well, I cleaned out my little container and it’s no longer full of green water, much easier to see what’s in there now now. I did take an annubias out last month and attach it to a piece of driftwood. I only found one other piece and this one had a larger piece of rhizome. This one might’ve...

Can anubius be propagated through leaves alone?

I think roots will sprout if you have enough of the stem there. I toss all of my anubias scraps into an unheated container that sits on my window ledge. I just went over to my container to see if anything was sprouting that I could take a picture of for you and I found some. I honestly cannot...
