Some interesting information here! Yes im pretty sure I have soft water. Was it @Essjay who checked? Apologies if not.
Regarding the over breeding and which shop owners to trust etc. Im guessing Pier Aquatics is very trustworthy and has a good reputation. I had a look and its only 25 minutes...
Firstly thanks for the advice.
Tetras or guppies - different water type. Im quite sure someone on here had a look for me and I have soft water. So in this instance id probably be better with neon tetras.
(Is it just a case of calling up my north west water or can i look online?) to be sure...
I want to have a variety of tropical fish in my tank once cycled, its 160 litres 100x40x40cm so there is plenty of room.
So far I have decided on the following:
- 1 betta (I believe they prefer to be alone)
- 6-10 neon tetra (they prefer to be in a group)
- Guppies (i dont know much about them...
This is something that im starting to think about, my tank is also in the cycling process. Im looking at around 20 fish in my tank. Im going to start with the neon tertras.
I also want a betta amongst about 6 other varietys (that will all get along of course)
Just not sure when exactly to add...
I think that the variety of fish I will be getting wouldn’t appreciate fast moving water. As in the above post I think il put one infront of the heater.
Also one thing I want to try and avoid is a noisey pump
I really like the look of them (subtle ones) nothing drastic. My tank is a half decent size so what I’m thinking is an air stone in the back right just infront of the heater and pump (almost to hide them)
As a few of you now know, I have recently purchased a 160 litre tank that is in the cycling process ready for my fish.
Todays questions are regarding the air pump.
1. Is it a good thing to have an air stone in your tank?
2. Which is better an air stone or an air stip
3. Would having my...
Yeah, I will have a look in the pet store. Im guessing at the end of the day these slates they sell could have come from anywhere. Is it a case of the longer I soak the better? Because iv got a good 3-4 weeks yet before my cycle finishes, so i could soak the ones I have now in new water every...
So when I picture it, I want a lot going on in the tank, lots of plants and lots of hiding places,
Presumably “slate caves” is slate all put together to make a cave ?
I wanted to construct some kind of shelter for them or build something
Im in no rush, I have started the cycle now so will continue and get the plants at a later date!
More of my concern at the minute is still this slate, I don’t know if im being paranoid 😂 I don’t know wether to just go down the ornament route as it will save me thinking about it. I did want a...
Thank you, Iv noticed an ever so slight cloudiness after I poured in the dechlorinator but il keep an eye on it!
When is it best to start adding plants in?
Now or after the cycle ?
Okay thanks, time to be patient now then I guess!
I will check all the levels on Tuesday night and Friday night and then let you know how I’m getting on!
I have added the whole 60ml to my tank so will just let that mix in for a bit now.
The tanks at the correct temperature and the tetra safe is in.
The PH is almost correct and I the ammonia level is on 4
So I’m going to leave it now till Wednesday night then I will test the PH, the ammonia...
When I was a teenager I had tropical fish for years and never new about any of this. My fish always seemed healthy colourful etc perhaps I got lucky ? 😂
I got a bit confused by your last post.
Going forward the way I will be filling my tank up with be with with a new plastic container I have...
Yes I bought the one @CaptainBarnicles showed me a few posts up.
Ok so no need for the nitrite test just yet I will do that Wednesday evening after work.
Okay I shall also add some tetra safe start in now
You mentioned “following the method on here”
Sorry we’re abouts will I find that? Or is...
So just to sum up we’re I’m up too.
Today:
- I have replaced half of the water and ammonia level is now 4.0
- I have got the temperature to 28 degrees
- I have tested the PH level which is currently at 7.4
- I have added 2.1 ml of dechlorinator to the tank.
I’m guessing now it’s time to...
Ok just been and got some, my tank currently has 130 - 135 litres of water in.
So with these instructions of 1ml for 60 liters, should I be putting in just a touch over 2ml ?
Is there a specific brand to look for?
I think Iv watched 3 or 4 twenty minute videos now on the nitrogen cycle and obviously read all this advice, however I don’t remember much on the dechlorinater 😂
Is this something I can pick up from pets at home ?
Ok so it appears that what I have is tetra safe start.
So what I need to do then is get the ammonia level correct. Then add “Tetra aqua safe”
Then wait and test for ammonia and nitrite 3 days later…
Keep doing this every 3 days till ammonia and nitrite has dropped
As time goes on and I add...
Thank you once again for the advice, I really do appreciate it! I’d be lost otherwise.
Ok great so when the time comes to do a water change, I take out the sponge and squeeze it… into tank water that has been removed from my tank into a bucket. (Basically cleaning it in its original water)
@Essjay
Also… Tomorrow, Once I have replaced half of the water and i test again…
(providing it’s at this point green and not black) what is it that I then add to the water? (I think it’s bacteria that starts to react with ammonia?)
Argh how frustrating!
The dimensions are 100cm x 40cm x 40cm
The substrate is currently 1cm in height and the water level is 5cm from the top.
So half of my water out, and replaced :/
Also… water conditioner? Is that the tetra safe bottle??
Ok so here’s the result… iv put 5ml of ammonia in the tank
3 hours has passed
It’s gone off the scale it’s almost black
I did 8 drops off each ammonia tester (which is what the bottles say)
Brill, thank you for that. I’m just out at the moment but will be home shortly. So the time between adding ammonia and testing will be 3 hours.
I’m guessing this will be ok. Il post pym results in about an hour! 😃
That photo is before I added it.
I’m not very good with all the science behind it but I guessed it would come at that colour at first.
So after the photo I added 5.05ml
