    My aquariums

Updated image of my discus aquarium; you can see the plant growth if you scroll back and find the older picture. Oddly plants are growing as if i'm injecting co2 (which i'm not); i wonder if the higher heat is having some unexpected impact. Temp was 84 but i've lowered it to around 82 which the...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

Bolivan ram won't enjoy 86. In the first picture the one on the left is the boss and the other are submissive. However, none of the pictures are close enough to see cheek marks and hte one on the left you can't even see the vertical stripes.

    2024 MLB season

A couple of years i moved to a non-baseball city and setup a 500 and 600 (gallon) aquarium so i think it will be a while before i move; those things are too heavy for me to drag along....

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

I've used hitachi and kordon ick meds with solution. I've had horrible long term effects of using salt in aquarium (not he fishes but plants will be taken out of whack and it took me several years to get things rebalanced); I've had mixed results with heat - while the geo can easily handle the...

Does anyone have know about the Angelfish called Blue California?

the pinoy gene causes blue; some foods will enhance certain colours like carotene will enhance orange/red (which is not a natural colour for angelfishes); The problem with trade names is they are largely made up for marketing. I have some nice blue angelfishes from a dealer who was easy to work...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

Yes that is why i've said multiple times he needs to provide pictures of all 4. I *think* winemilleri adults are the largest but of course females tend to be different size than the males and then there is the difference in sizes of various fishes. I worry about keeping more than one species...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

Yes Gary but here: [old picture removed] The red mark badly circles the cheek mark - the right vertical edge of the right circle is through the cheek mark (badly circled) is actually through the cheek mark so it cannot be Abalios; it cannot be Winemilleri because of the 7 vertical stress mark...

I think in this case these fishes can be fully identified. I'm 99.9% sure of the species of the fish i named. The real problem (as i see it) is that when collected multiple species frequently show up. I've asked numerous times but have yet to receive an answer are these wild caught or tank...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

This specific fish is g. dicrozoster. This is identified by the cheek mark; the 7 vertical black stripes with the one after the spot a y'ish shape. The other three might be the same species or different similar species and close up of them would be required. The fish can control the intensity...

They require soft sand; current is a plus. They are not picky eaters and they tend to be robust. You have not said yet if they are wild caught.

    2024 MLB season

A little bit of history: When i lived in Colorado the Rockies when to the playoffs; When i lived in Atlanta the Braves won the world series When I lived in Boston the Red sox won the world series - When I lived in Colorado the Broncos won the super bowl When I lived in Nashville the Titans made...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

That was my guess - the pictured fish is a g. abalios; but if they are wild caught it is not uncommon for several species to come in on a single catch/import. He sells them as Geophagus surinamensis which means you could get one of 6 or so species frequently mixed together. --- Btw a detailed...

Also known as apistogramma cacatuoides - what a joke he has no clue what he is talking about. Also there is no fish called cupido cichild. The fish in question is b. cupido and it is not only in a genus far away from apistogramma the two fishes are totally different in behavior and appearance...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

Geophagus is a genus; but the genus is broken into informal groups or complex: This paper list some of them: https://www.tfhmagazine.com/articles/freshwater/a-survey-of-eartheaters-full-article - I noticed that at least one of your geo has the lateral black dot but i can't tell if it is absent...

What size are they - cupids don't grow that large - esp the females. The stated size of adults are around 4 inches though males will get larger than females by around an inch. I've had mine for around 6 1/2 to 7 months. They came in around 2 inches. The major difference is a bit of orange has...

    Mystery Tetra

That is a decent temp range for most rasbora; just be aware if you venture into sa fishes that some are not going to be happy at 77 and others might be dead at 72. A simple example would be blue rams; though i suppose a more common example would be discus.

    Mystery Tetra

Generally most rasbora are going to prefer cooler temps; tetra depending on species can range from 90 to 60 (green neon are a warm water species while neon are ok at 72; i'm sure there are folks who can name species of tetra that can go cooler. Brilliant rasbora are going to be happy around 76...

Unexpected Cupid behavior… well duh, that's because they are not Cupids

I have 8 and they hang out together most of the time; i think a pair has quasi form as frequently two (one large one small) will go off on their own but they mostly hang out together; there were (and are) very shy. When i added 7 m .egregius that reduce some of their shyness. The m. egregius...

    GIANT OTO'S

My cupido are wild caught and i can say they are a bit on the shy side; i'd say the shiest fish i own - i did add some wild caught m. egregius and that helped them calm down (the m. egreius are fairly small but they are already laying eggs). Here is a picture of my cupido:

    GIANT OTO'S

I want to correct one thing here as i think there is a misconception. otto are very easy to keep IF the digestive bacteria hasn't died in the gut. Adding aquarium salt to my aquarium

If you have plants salt can murder them. Also the fishes you have really want soft water and making hard water harder isn't going to make them healthier. If your water is indeed hard then you can find appropriate stocking in central america and rift lakes. Naturally i don't mean travel to those...

    Help with stocking my aquarium

To be honest your aquarium is too small for most fishes; however you could do some shrimps with a nice betta. The betta might go after some of the shrimps but if you give them caves and stuff to hide in the betta won't get that many. You could do a nice school of ember tetra but the tank really...

Why Hobbiest find Discus fish Demanding!

It helps in less aggression between fishes (esp cichild) and better water quality. This past year i added 5 aquariums that were 180 or larger. In my 600 i moved my stocking from a 120 - and when the fishes get pissed at each other (wild cichild are very good at signalling piss off moods) the...

Not been on for ages and need advice on replacement filter

The fluval fx series are ok. I have an fx6 and i presume the fx2 is similar with a smaller motor and canister. They are a little painful to clean esp if you have to drain the water out before moving it - this might be less true with the fx2. I've not used the fluval 4 series and 2 series (stuff...
