Whats your normal procedure when you have a fish death?

Thanks, just finished my water change and will keep an eye on the tank. I tested the water and parameters for ammonia and nitrite were zero, nitrate about 15ppm when they are usually lower. Only thing I can think of is my local water company is doing ongoing water works until June replacing a...

Whats your normal procedure when you have a fish death?

As title suggests, I've had a death in my community tank. I found one of my pygmy corys on the substrate just now. It was in an open area, it definitely wasn't there yesterday when I was feeding so I know it's less than 24 hours but not sure exactly how long it was there. I've barely looked at...

Ember Tetras at Pets At Home

I couldn't say, but usually on their website they will state how big they are. Sometimes you can choose between different sized ones if they have them available.

pregant guppy struggling to give birth

Unfortunately by the time symptoms of dropsy show it can often be too late. You may never know the cause. The kindest thing to do would be to euthanise her as dropsy is thought to be painful.

Another vouch for tropco. Have bought from them a number of times, lost a few but most still going strong.

It's usually the female who ends up boss but mine are the other way round I'd say. Good luck!

    Bonding Bunnies

Good to hear! Sometimes it is super smooth and I think you have age on your side with your two which is great. Fingers crossed for them, nothing more heartwarming than seeing two bonded bunnies together. They look so relaxed.

Betta fish fin clamped and bloated?

It's hard to see any bloating in the video, would you be able to see if you can get an aerial picture of him? He sure seems active too! You could try fasting him for a couple of days to see if that makes any difference. How much water do you change each week? If you're concerned about him you...

    Female betta tankmates

Just to be controversial I'm of the opposite opinion, danios are pretty quick moving and likely to stress the betta IMO. I think you'll get a lot of mixed responses to this one and as it's a female you're considering you'd probably have better success but for me I wouldn't chance it.

I can't tell which pathogen or problem is affecting these corydoras, and I don't know how to proceed. Any help or advice is appreciated

I had a similar issue with my cories not too long back and went through a course of worming to be on the safe side, it seems to have done the trick although I did lose the ones I was most concerned about. Mine didn't have sunken bellies but had barb/fin damage and were flicking/rolling so...

    Bonding Bunnies

Gorgeous bunnies!! I would recommend a forum called Rabbits United, its full of really knowledgeable users who can help. It's best to wait until at least 6 weeks post-op before formally introducing them so that all hormones are settled. For now having them side by side isn't a bad idea but...

so... I've never had a betta... am I missing something???

Here's my handsome boy! Not a wild type as he's an alien betta but he's so full of character. He demands his food as soon as his light goes on, dancing until he gets it. He jumps out of the water to attack me when I'm trying to feed him too! I did want to put some snails in with him but he's...

    6 gallon ADF tank

They are brilliant characters, and yes they do accidentally munch each other from time to time, good job they don't have teeth and are pretty harmless! Lol. I'm sure they will love their new setup when you're able to sort it.

Betta fungus not working from jungle clear! Can’t tell to stop meds to rest or change water early.

Sorry you lost your little guy, I'm no expert so unfortunately can't give any advice on why the fungus may have been so treatment resistant, there may have been something else going on for him that weakened his ability to fight any infection. You could change to a plain sand substrate, it...

Betta fungus not working from jungle clear! Can’t tell to stop meds to rest or change water early.

If he has shown signs of dropsy then there could be internal damage that you can't see, dropsy can be a symptom of a wider issue. I am hoping that's not the case for your little guy but if the medication hasn't cleared it up then he may be struggling to fight off whatever infection it is. Hope...

Can corydoras flick/roll as part of their natural behaviour?

When mine did this I ended up worming them after posting symptoms and getting advice on here (apologies am on the road so can't link my thread) but had never seen that behaviour before and haven't seen it since finishing worming.

    Cycled Tank, Fish Are Dying

1 week isn't usually enough to cycle a tank, even with bacteria. I assume you mean bottled bacteria? That can help kick-start a cycle, although there is some debate. Unless you transferred a filter from a previous tank with bacteria in it, in which case that would help the cycle. Do you have...

    Dwarf puffer vacation/weekend feeding

Most fish will be absolutely fine not being fed for a couple of days so you shouldn't need to worry.

My betta has a wound on top of her head.

If you have no filter you need to be really hot on water changes, ie daily to keep things super clean, especially while she heals. If you need to go down the salt route add it to her tank as its less stressful than lifting her out, although I'm not sure how adding salt to a tank with no filter...

    Mystary plant killer.

If you have lots of snails you are likely overfeeding your tank, which could be leading to water quality issues, in which case your water changes may not be sufficient. It sounds like there are a few things out of balance. Your plants need nutrients, which you can add, but you may also need to...

Longtail Betta Varieties? Ethics and Concerns

Yeah they are expensive here in the UK too, I paid £30 for mine compared to roughly half that for a plakat where I am, but they really are stunning! I admit I wanted something a bit more visually striking but also liked the fact that the fins aren't so long with these guys.

Longtail Betta Varieties? Ethics and Concerns

Have you looked into alien bettas? I know they are completely unnatural but are very striking and fins are much shorter than the ones you've listed so they don't seem to have as many of the same issues. I think looking at the crowntails etc a 10g long would probably be better to give more space...

    6 gallon ADF tank

So just looking at my thermometer now mine are at about 25.5. I was so ignorant about 10 years ago when I first got mine and had no heater whatsoever, I lived in a very warm flat so I think the ambient temperature covered for my early mistakes. It's my understanding they can tolerate quite a...

They do "sing", but you're right it's a mating thing so it may be too soon!

    6 gallon ADF tank

They do love a terracotta pot! I haven't heard of ADF's glass surfing before, although their "swimming" is sometimes quite erratic. I tend to feed with a pipette as I've found they just don't find it otherwise, they're not very motivated to search for food on their own lol.

    Lost a froggy today

Yes I was wondering whether there might be any breeders here in the UK I could try, not sure there is the market for it but I may research it further down the line. For now I'm going to focus on the two I have and ensuring they're healthy! I think they're my favourite aquatic little guys and...

    Lost a froggy today

Unfortunately I tore down the other tank straight away, and it was only ever designed to be temporary as I don't have room for 3 tanks long-term. I think the frog may have been susceptible as he never gained weight so I do wonder if there was something wrong with him, but it's still rubbish...

    Water hardness question

Completely agree with everything you've said here! I'm relatively new to the hobby but the way I try and look at it is that X fish lives in soft/hard water and has evolved that way so I should try to replicate those conditions as much as I can. Of course nothing will be perfect and I'll be...

Thanks, I do have access to a local source of RO water so I am going to make efforts to bring the hardness down and see how we go.

    6 gallon ADF tank

I've kept ADF's for years, had one live to 8 but haven't had the same luck with my newer batch unfortunately. The only thing I would say is 5 gallons is quite small, and they prefer being kept in larger groups. They're very trainable when it comes to feeding but lots of patience is needed!

    Lots of Pandas

My tank is heavily planted, sadly I've lost a few cories through illness which I've treated and my pandas were more susceptible so I'm just glad the ones I've got left are seemingly okay!

    Lost a froggy today

Bit of a bummer, I had moved my african dwarf frogs out of my main tank while I used worming medication on my fish as they were showing symptoms. I kept the frogs out much longer than recommended by the manufacturer and did extra water changes to help dilute the meds out once I'd finished...

    55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

I really hope they're just hiding somewhere, just an idea but do you have a camera you could try pointing at the tank overnight to see if any of them appear?

    55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

I know how frustrating it is when your frogs disappear! Slightly different but I have African Dwarf Frogs and had to move them out of my main tank while I dosed for worms. The biggest, fattest one just completely disappeared one day. I tore that tank apart several times looking for her, there...
