HELP water change killed all my fish!!

Got some pics of some of the fish that I couldn't save. I've left the remaining fish in the QT tank to hopefully recover, I'm not confident they will all make it. It's night time here now so I can't keep messing with things. I'll test the water in the main tank in the morning and post results.

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

I never knew this until today. Always something to learn in this hobby but wish it hadn't been such a painful lesson to learn. I grabbed my QT tank from the basement and set it up, went and got some more RO water and have put the fish in, I lost one before I had finished setting up. I'm down to...

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

Thanks, I didn't test before I added the buffer but I'm sure it would've been 7 as there's no reason for it not to have been.

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

That was RO water where I'd added a little seachem buffer just to reduce pH slightly, it hadn't gone in the tank at that point.

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

I think you're right, I just don't know what caused the spike in pH. I think it must've been my mistake, that's the only explanation. I use seachem equilibrium to remineralise.

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

I've put the RO water from my second post in the tank, put the survivors back in and the cories are all extremely lethargic again. I've again taken a litre of water out of my 6gal and scooped them all out and now they're fine. I don't understand what's going on, nothing else has gone into this...

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

@Essjay No I prepared it myself. There's only a couple of scenarios I can think of - 1. Problem at the RO facility (unlikely) 2. I've accidentally added alkaline buffer instead of acid buffer and increased the pH 3. Problem with the container I'm using, but these containers never have chemicals...

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

Hi all I refer back to this post I made a couple of days ago for background: https://www.fishforums.net/threads/ammonia-spike-after-fertilising.494145/page-2#post-4337085 I did about a 65/70% water change a few hours using remineralised RO water, I just went back to feed the tank and my fish...

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Okay so the good news first, water test on my betta tank is showing no ammonia. The bad news the 30gal still shows high levels of ammonia. Have attached the pic below. I refilled my RO water so will try a bigger water change now. One of my pygmies also seems very inactive. Can't see anything...

Need some help with small planted tank with a single Betta

First thing I would do is buy lots of floating plants, something easy to care for like elodea densa and some water lettuce. Your betta will appreciate having some cover, and these plants are pretty cheap too. Have you been checking your water parameters? You mention your betta is missing part...

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Thanks will do. Unfortunately I have some ADF's so salt is out unless I move the frogs out but here's hoping it won't come to that. Have to get some more RO water tomorrow as have run out but will test it when I get it just to see.

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Not adding anything that raises the pH, although when I test it's usually about 7.4ish, will test tomorrow morning. No nitrite showing up when I test either.

Ah I must have the magic touch I seem to be able to grab them just right!

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Thanks, I would usually ask my partner but he's gone to a festival so am home alone. We're in a flat so can only use buckets to do changes unfortunately. Just the way it goes! I'll update after I test tomorrow, hopefully the additional prime will help (and also give my back a rest!).

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Luckily I only have sand substrate so hopefully it will get better from here. I'm a bit cautious of doing too big a change in the 30gal as I got some shrimp a few months back and I know they can be quite sensitive so am sticking with around 50%. I can't find the baby shrimp any more so not sure...

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Yes I've been using my tongs to get the little balls out! Damn things... I've got all the ones I can see for now but will keep checking.

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Thanks, have just done another change now. I had steroid injections in my back a few days ago so emptying buckets is far from ideal but I know it has to be done. I've added a little extra seachem prime which I use anyway as my dechlorinator as I know it can help temporarily bind ammonia. Will...

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Thank you for the detailed response. Do I just continue with daily water changes until the levels hopefully go down? I'm a bit puzzled as to why it's caused an issue now when I've used the same tabs before - from the same packet - without issue, it's just been a while since I've put any in...

    Ammonia spike after fertilising

Hi all I usually add a cap of liquid fertiliser in my tank with each water change. I have added root tabs every so often when I first set the tank up but hadn't done so for several months. Earlier this week I added a few during a water change as I put some new bulbs in. I tested the water the...

    6 gallon ADF tank

Haha what a clever boy munching the giant worm fingers! You get some great pics of yours. I need to check mine more closely to see if I have males/females, from size and shape I think I have one male but not 100%. I've been feeding mine live worms and they absolutely love it, you should give it...

    Betta sick

Some people say it can work if you have a large group, but it can end in situations like this as well unfortunately. It may be that you have quite a territorial female which could have exacerbated it. As @sharkweek178 says its quite complex trying to keep more than one betta together. Sorry you...

    Nitrites n plants

Keep an extra close eye on the ammonia and nitrite as you've increased the stocking. From your description it sounds like they've gone straight into the tank without quarantine so you'll have to be vigilant for any illnesses that may pop up.

    Betta sick

Are they in the same tank or separate?
  31. L

    Nitrites n plants

I would get them back in ASAP, but get lots more plants to break up territory areas for each one to diffuse any potential issues.
  32. L

    Nitrites n plants

If you rinse the plants before reusing them they should be fine. Are you absolutely sure there's also no bullying going on, sororities are a bit controversial as they can break down quickly. (Not saying that's what's happened but you mentioned your cories are fine and it's just the bettas...

    Upgrading to 112l

I added some blue neocaridina shrimp to my tank a month or so ago and today I have just seen two tiny shrimplets! This is probably not a big deal to most people but as a relative newbie still and as someone who's never kept shrimp before I was really pleased! Hopefully they make it to adulthood...

    Nitrites n plants

That suggests that there is still something in the tank leaching into the water column and causing the issue. Do you have a spare tub you can temporarily put all the fish in while you remove the substrate and start again with something like inert sand? I know it's a lot of work but might be...
  35. L

    Nitrites n plants

Sorry to hear you've lost more fish, this must be really frustrating. Keep up with large daily water changes while you're dealing with this. The plants won't be causing the spike but is there any chance there's still any of the soil left anywhere? Did you put any of it under your substrate? If...

    Nitrites n plants

I think a lot of it will be about time and patience. You're essentially doing a fish in cycle now, so lots of large water changes, potentially even daily until your test results for ammonia and nitrite are 0. I'm not sure how many fish you have left now but they've been through a lot with these...
