Not sure how big the tank is but generally maintenance would involve at least a 50% (ideally more) water change each week. Try larger more regular water changes to see if that makes a difference.

This was the best picture I could get of the fin rot and one of his overall body so you can see the other fins aren't affected. I'm really bad at getting pics of him, even using food.

No worries! Just hoping it makes a difference, I know it's a relatively common problem in the fish world but it's not something I've dealt with until now.

I don't use routinely, I had some left from previous use in an old tank and know it's a suggested treatment for fin rot. I heaped tablespoon is probably equivalent to the 3 level teaspoons I put in so I would say the dosage is about right?

Thanks Colin for clarifying. I wasn't sure if I needed to do daily water changes now or wait but this clears it up. I used teaspoons, the API dosage guidance says to use 3 teaspoons for every 5 gal - my boy is in a 6 gal so I played it safe and added 3.

Can you post your results? As Colin said, keep up with big daily water changes while the fish are showing signs of irritation. If something was irritating your own skin you'd treat it daily, it's a similar principle.

It's a shame someone has an attitude like that as ultimately it will likely lead to other customers ending up with unsuitable fish for their needs/wants. Good job you know your stuff and were able to correct her!

It doesn't sound overstocked, the only thing I would change is not adding the betta because of the gourami. If you want a betta and have space you could always set up a separate tank for one :D
