    New tank, need substrate ideas.

Arrogant piece of work aren't you? Perhaps you failed to read the reference document I supplied? It's a scientific, peer reviewed paper. As I stated previously, I've raised Corydoras juveniles myself, all of whom have been feeding off of gravel substrate. They all presented excellent rates of...

    New tank, need substrate ideas.

I seriously doubt Wikipedia would allow you to edit anything. You seem to be an example of the saying "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." You need to pay attention to my signature line. And since you evidently ignored the research paper cited in Wikipedia, I've attached a copy for your...

    New tank, need substrate ideas.

A sponge filter will work if it's fine enough. Filter floss might be better, or even panty hose which you can cut and wrap around the intakes. It also helps if you keep your intakes well above the sand, rinse the sand thoroughly before adding, and be very careful not to disturb it much when...

    New tank, need substrate ideas.

The barbel issue is a myth. The reason some corydoras suffer from damaged barbels is due to poor water quality with high levels of bacteria. In any case, see the following links:

    New tank, need substrate ideas.

Once again, this is simply false. The following is from Wikipedia (the statement is references a science paper): Corydoras are generally found in smaller-sized streams, along the margins of larger rivers, in marshes, and in ponds.[2] They are native to slow-moving and almost still (but seldom...

    Sorry. That's simply false.

    Fluval 406 filter

That's serious overkill for a 72 gallon tank. I would also point out that 2 filters are better than one. If one dies, your fish won't. It also allows you to clean the filter media on one filter, which has a negative impact on beneficial bacteria, while still maintaining good filtration. A week...

    New tank, need substrate ideas.

Sand is a bad idea. It can ruin the filter you are planning on installing, assuming you vacuum your substrate. The finer particles that are stirred up can enter the intake. Fine gravel is perfect for Corydoras. It also works great for most plants.

NEW TANK - WHAT TO STOCK??!?!?!

No I am not. Byron is saying water parameters are important. I'm saying they are not. I provided some examples to illustrate my point.

NEW TANK - WHAT TO STOCK??!?!?!

I have to disagree with this. The vast majority of freshwater fish will do just fine with any GH, pH or KH levels typically found in tapwater. There are of course extremes that should be avoided, but GH 3-15, pH 6.5-8.0, KH >3 should be fine. Extremely low GH or KH are more likely to cause...

Seeking suggestions for a colorful tank mate(s)

Some diamond tetras would really show out in that tank. Or you could add a pair of platinum angelfish if you wanted something larger.

    White fungus?

How do you expect anyone to help if you don't provide basic information? Water parameters? Symptoms? Time the tank has been up and running (after cycling)? When the fish were added to the tank? Whether the fish were quarantined?

Are all nitrate bad for fishes ?

This "fact" is repeated ad nauseam on tropical fish forums. It's false. The tests the EPA use are measuring NO3-N while most aquarium test kits (all?) are measuring NO3. The EPA figure needs to be converted for apples to apples comparison. When done, this results in a limit of 44 ppm using the...

Are all nitrate bad for fishes ?

I wouldn't say "useless". The Stendker folks were in business for over 50 years. They bred and sold hundreds of thousands of fish, which were generally recognized as being of the highest quality. PS - Stendker recently stopped selling discus and now only sell discus food. I guess that tells us...

Water chemistry confusion - fish suffering. Please HELP!?

Your problem started with cleaning your filters. You cleaned them too thoroughly. In doing so, you removed a large number of the nitrifying bacteria. Subsequently, you experienced a spike in ammonia and nitrite levels.

    Media Question For HOB

There is a LOT of misinformation about filtration in general, and filter media specifically. Adequate biofiltration is ALL that is needed. Mechanical and chemical filtration are not only unnecessary, they are almost always counterproductive. Biofiltration is a complex topic that I'm not even...

    Fish tank problems

I can't determine where the silicone is or the bubbles. I see a wide hazy area below the black gravel with a narrow white strip just below it. Below that I see what looks like more gravel. I'm guessing the hazy area above is silicone that smeared across the glass and wasn't removed? At the...

    Water changers

It depends on your situation. Some people keep a 55 gallon drum nearby and use a pump to transfer water from the drum to the aquarium. You could do the same thing while keeping the drum outside and just running a hose from the drum to wherever your tank is located.

Canister Skill Issue? Or Marineland Messup?

The API kit is unreliable for pH readings between 7.4 - 8.0. I had exactly the same problem and switched to a Tetra test kit. My guess would be that your actual pH is 8.0. BTW - you don't need to really shake the tubes for the pH test. Just turn them over a few times to mix the solution. The...

    Water changers

The biggest problem with Python water changes is the amount of water they waste. They rely on the water from the faucet to create the siphoning effect. It takes at least as much water to do this as the amount of water that's being siphoned. To put it more clearly, removing 30 gallons of water...

    What's your favorite filter media

You have a HW 3000 AND a 604B on your 75??? I would think you'd have some serious turbulence issues. I actually had to use BOTH a spray bar AND a nozzle on EACH of my 704s to reduce the current. My 180 actually holds 150 net gallons, which is double your 75 and I have plenty of water flow.

    What's your favorite filter media

Are you using a single 704B on your 200 gallon? If so, I would just double up on it. Two canisters are better than one. When you clean one, the other is still processing, limiting the impact cleaning has on biofiltration. Also, I would do some more research on the HW 3000. There have been...

    What's your favorite filter media

Forget the ceramic balls. Everyone who responded to this post recommending foam filter media is correct. There's nothing better, other than fluidized bed K1 filters. The soap free plastic pot scrubbers would be my second choice.

I'm about to buy some food for my Discus

Ouch! That's some damn expensive fish food. I feed my Discus, Cardinals, Corydoras a mixture of four different brands of slow sinking granules. The most expensive of the bunch is around $7 for 93g. I'm new to the forum, so that's U.S. dollars. Is this forum based in Australia? I also feed...

    Discus friend

It's possible that fish is wild, or one generation removed. Wild fish normally show "stress" bars. Farm raised fish don't show them so much because breeders have selectively bred their fish to remove the trait. His fins are erect, not clamped, and his color looks good. Stressed fish not only...
