I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

On the Seriously Fish website the discussants frequently say that a certain species requires a pH between 4-6, for example, for breeding purposes. Sometimes the discussant will say the fish species needs soft water. Soft water and acidic pH are not synonymous terms. You can have very soft water...

    Whimpy nitrate filter

Several months ago I plumbed in a nitrate filter cartridge into the water line I use for python water exchange. I did this because my well water runs a nitrate level of about 25 ppm. The filter brought the nitrate concentration to undetectable but unfortunately the cartridge capacity was not...

    What are you doing today?

Yesterday we drove 5 1/2 hours with Devil dog to North Carolina to visit the grandkids. I am leaving my Tanks on their own for seven days. My six yellowtail Congo tetras and the pair of p. pulcher Ndonga arrived only a week ago. I hope they are not too stressed by my absence and the lack of food.

🐡 FOTM VOTE NOW - October 2024 Fish of the Month Contest(Tetras)

Wild caught Alestopetersius caudalis (yellow tail Congo tetra). He is in a 60 gallon tank with five other yellow tail tetras, 6 Anomalochromis thomasi and a pair of p. pulcher (Ndonga). When viewed in person, he is a mercury silver color. The tail will turn yellow when he is an adult

    Tetra NitrateMinus.

I finished my first bottle of Tetra Nitrate Minus in my 60 gallon tank. Seems to be working. However I cannot find anymore. Amazon is out. The are multiple sellers on eBay but they are all in the UK and the shipping charges are ridiculous.

We drove to Philadelphia for my wife’s cousin’s 75th birthday. It was held in the Barnes museum housing the largest collection of Impressionistic paintings in the western hemisphere. It was the private collection of Dr. Barnes who gifted it to the city upon his death. Great birthday, great...

    What are you doing today?

Ha ha. No religion. I’m talking about the opera Norma by Bellini. Norma was a Druid priestess who falls in love with a Roman soldier, her avowed enemy. Very dramatic in the bel canto style.

How about some pre Celtic Druid tunes? Especially the ones the Priestess chanted during human sacrifice.

    Into another dimension

It’s a quarantine tank. But the little guys are about 1/4 inch long. They will end up in a 20 gallon long post quarantine.

    Into another dimension

I bought 18 dwarf emerald raspora a few days ago and placed them in my 10 gallon tank. This group of nano fish immediately disappeared into the aquatic plants of the tank. I haven’t seen hide nor hair nor scale of any of them since they were placed in the tank. This is sort of spooky.

WOW!!!! A $500.00 Cory, you would have to really want one of those pretty badly… way beyond me…

My experience with Dan has been very positive. It has been pointed out in this thread that Dan’s overhead is higher than many shops for a variety of reasons not to mention his commitment to long term quarantine. However, Dan is very reasonable on shipping. I can buy a small box of fish from Dan...

    Is this unusual behavior

On Tuesday, I added six yellowtail tetras (Alestopetersius caudalis) to my 60 gallon tank. The tank also contains six butterfly cichlids (a. thomasi) that have been in the tank for four weeks. I thought the tetras would occupy the upper third of the water column. However, they shoal in the lower...

Entry #29 The pair of p. pulcher Ndonga are still MIA. I am impatient to see what they look like. The yellowtail Congo tetras are quite active, but skittish when I approach the tank. The butterfly cichlids (a. thomasi) are around and about, and are less afraid of my presence. The tetras and p...

    Fish stores and GH

Most fish stores sell fish that live in various degrees of water hardness. Do you think that the majority of fish stores individualize the hardness of the water for a particular species’ needs or do you think as a matter of convenience all of their fish are housed in water from the same water...

Need feedback on this 120-gallon tank

I bought a black vinyl backing on Amazon that came with glue on one side. I just peeled off the paper covering the glue side and stuck the vinyl backing onto a 4 foot long tank. The vinyl was thick so it added some insulation.

    Is it worth it?

Ditto. I had four male platys and five female platys in a 20 gallon tank. I have now sold over 100 juveniles to a local fish store. I never planned on being in the fish business. It is a pain in the neck netting all those little guys. I ended up rehoming the females.
