When I was quite young, maybe 5 years old my father bought home a rooster. It clucked around the property for a few days and then we had him for dinner.
My Alestopetersius caudalis (Yellow tail Congo tetra) are best bros with my anomalochromis thomasi. The two species hang together with no squabbling. The pair of Pelvicachromis pulcher Ndonga are not reassured by this camradery and are hold up in their coconut caves all day.
I try to keep my nitrate level as low as possible. I have a friend with a 125 g Mbuna tank with nitrate levels always around 300 ppm. Most of the fish tare 8 years old in that tank and continue to spawn successfully. Go figure!
I have to be especially careful with the nitrate filter I plumbed into my fish sink. Once it gets saturated with nitrate it can suddenly dump it all in one fell swoop. Catastrophe!
I have a dedicated thermometer for my tanks and for tap water. I am a stickler for making sure the tap water in an exchange is within two degrees or closer to the tank water.
After the sodium recharge I rinse the resin bag in a gallon of spring water to help flush away the loosely bound sodium. I monitor the TDS and haven’t noticed an increase yet. But point well taken. I have not figured out a way to discharge the tightly bound sodium in a safe manner before...
This is a post for those of you who have municipality water or well water with detectable nitrate levels that could be deleterious to your fish. OI would like to share a solution that has worked for me regarding my well water with a nitrate concentration ranging from 25 to 30 ppm. My tanks are...

I caught the briefest glimpse of the female p. pulcher. She has a pink, purple and lavender belly. I wish she would stay in view for a longer period of time.
West African Congolese set up. This 60 gallon tank is 10 weeks old: 48”Wx18.5”Lx16”H. Fluval digital heater. Hygger lights. Aquaclear 110 HOB filter and an air powered sponge filter.
Stock: six a. thomasi (African butterfly cichlids), six a. caudalis (WC yellow tail Congo tetras) and a pair of...
Sold 12 juvenile red coral dwarf platys to my lfs. I now have sold over 75 of these guys since August. Preparing for a weekend with my daughter’s family. There is a family wedding on Sunday and the grandkids will be here since they are flower girls in the ceremony. Their dresses are so cute.
I would only treat two consecutive times, each time for 48 hours. Flubendazole is potent. I have found no effect on denitrifying bacteria or on Anubias, corynewentii or Amazon swords or Java ferns.

The TR a. thomasi and WC a. caudalis are quite pretty and their colors are evolving. This is really apparent when the light strikes them on a certain angle. The WC p. pulcher male remains very drab but I rarely see him. I never see the female. None of the fish are comfortable with me...
A pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides- Orange morph arrived yesterday. Lovely fish. Anyone know where they feed in the water column. Surface or substrate or in between? Thanks.
Two of five tanks needed water exchange today, the 60 gallon and the 20 gallon. All livestock needed feeding since I feed M,W and Fs. I worked for about 45 minutes while listening to Beethoven’s piano sonata #29 in Bb major.
Some bullies in my high school Latin class hung our teacher out of the second floor window holding on to his heels. Et tu, Brute? No I didn’t participate in the insurrection. Did I help old Mr. Perino? Piger fui.
