Thank you to everyone on TFF

I agree with you. In addition to my larger tanks, I have three 5 gallon tanks and one ten gallon tank. I am having lots of fun with the small tanks, housing shrimp, dwarf, crayfish, and plants.

    Java ferns

My understanding is that Java ferns are low light plants. I do not put direct light on them. And I only expose them to artificial light between 8 AM and 1 PM.

Nitrite does not need to be zero to test Nitrate accurately

Nitrate test kits usually employ the cadmium dye method. The reagents first convert the available nitrate into nitrite. The nitrate then binds to a cadmium based dye. The binding of the dye is proportional to the nitrite concentration. Any nitrites that are around before the reagents are added...

    Cycled tank but fish dying

Since you have multiple generations of platys in your tank, how do you know your soft water is not shortening the lifespan of your fish as many would maintain.

    PH Increasing Over Time

I guess the soft water pillow treatment will remove calcium and magnesium ions dropping your GH. What do you anticipate will be the magnitude in the drop of GH? I’m not familiar with the pillow.

    PH Increasing Over Time

The pH of tap water can increase over time when left out primarily due to the outgassing of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the water. Tap water usually contains dissolved CO2, which helps keep the pH slightly acidic. When water is exposed to air, especially if it's aerated or stirred, the CO2 gas can...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

I grew up hunting, mostly duck and deer. I gave it up in my thirties. No animal deserves a slow death. Even the best shots with bow or gun sometimes cripple before they kill.

    Recommendations for lighting and heater

Thank you, Gary. While I have your ear or should I say eyes, let me ask you a question about the pieces of slate I will provide a. thomasi so she can deposit her eggs. How many square inches approximately should the flat surface be? Thanks again. I have a nice piece of slate that can make...

    30g long for sale

When I set up my first tank, I was so careful. It was the winter of 2022. I had finished cycling my new tank and added my beautiful fish. Then there was a terrible power outage that lasted four days. The temperature in my house fell to 45°F and the tank temperature fell to 50°F. All of my fish...

This heater seems a bit finicky in regards to position and water flow. What about the heater do you like that makes it better than its competitors?

    Random Discussion

I sold 15 red coral dwarf platy juveniles to my lfs for $10 in store credit. I bought frozen blood worms with my booty. I figure I can do this transaction about every 6 weeks and get my self an Eheim heater for my new tank by the time winter arrives.

    Filter that removes nitrate

The nitrate filter I bought will filter up to 5 gallons per minute without losing effectiveness, so they say. It’s unclear what the capacity is for nitrate removal but they estimated with the nitrate concentration of 30 ppm and using 20 gallons per week, I may get a year of function. They...

No discernible problems yet. But the cognoscenti on this forum recommend levels less than 10 ppm.

RO water filters… at the end of the changeable filter’s life…

As I understand it an RO filter efficiency doesn't necessarily decline as it ages. As the filter becomes clogged with contaminants, the water flow is restricted, leading to a decrease in GPM.

HELP water change killed all my fish!!

Ammonia exists in two forms in water: un-ionized ammonia (NH3+) and ionized ammonium (NH4+). The ratio between these two forms is determined by the water's pH level. At higher pH levels (more alkaline conditions), more ammonia exists in the toxic un-ionized form (NH3+), which can easily...

How would Labidochromis joanjohnsonae do with red zebra cichlids

I am no authority on cichlids but how many cichlids do you want in your 55 gallon? I think Gary E might take exception to the variety and number in your tank. He has counseled me to be prudent.

I think so. But you still will have to to buy a lid, filtering system and heater. For my 20 gallon long and 60 gallon I bought foldable glass lids from Aqueon. They work well.
