    Quikrete play sand

I've been using HTH pool filter sand without rinsing and it has gone well - my understanding is play sand is finer (which would be a plus for many of the fishes i keep); don't get me wrong pool fitler sand is not coarse but certain fishes finer the better. Anyway this is my 8x4 with HTH pool...

Why do manufacturers feel the need to change their products?

Yea I'm not sure what is up with omega-one - i see you are in the uk and here in usa it is also very hard to find. I wonder if they went out of business.

Why do manufacturers feel the need to change their products?

Product change for different reasons: cost to produce; some items in the product no longer available; improvements; attract new buyers; (for foods or meds) some ingrediants no longer legal; .... The bottom line they change for one of the following: effectiveness of the product legal...

    Old Pleco

That page is hardly authoritative; to the point of being junk. Having said that i doubt there is much reliable data available. Most people are poor fish keepers or have unsuitable conditions for optimal (or even good) longevity. After a bit of searching i could find several references that...

    75 gal stocking!

ember tetra don't really school unless frightened - some of the rasbora i have found that school - kubotai rasbora - not a tight school but always active near the top (higher than ember); emerald eye rasbora to my surprise form a fairly tight school (picture is of emerald):

    Air stone in planted aquarium?

Yea but if you are going to mess with an air stone you might as well as use a sponge filter ;)

Why Hobbiest find Discus fish Demanding!

I answered this already in the thread - i have a drip system of 2 gph (probably a little less); and i do a few out of band 40 gallon water changes (40 gallon since that is the size of the rubber maid pail i use - well probably closer to 37 or 38). As for the substrate not much seem to get into...

Why Hobbiest find Discus fish Demanding!

That must be my problem; mine are wild caught and tried lowering the temp slowly but when it goes below 82 or 81 they get really pissed off and upset. So i keep it between 82 and 84.

Can I keep plants in a 24" tall tank?

The 2nd p The 2nd picture you are looking at a 4ft wide end (48 inch) and the length of the tank is 10ft (120 inches). The two ruffle are at the front on the left with flower stalks. Combined they take up around 20 inches. Btw all my tanks have inert substrate and plants seem to grow fine in...

Can I keep plants in a 24" tall tank?

While root tabs will help certain plants i think the need for fertilizer is over-rated esp if you have messy fishes (gold fishes) and you do regular water changes. I have used nilgoc fertilizer and root tabs as well as sachem and api root tab; but in most cases i find little need. I'm finding...

Easiest live foods for smaller fish, particularly tetras

I tried that with shrimp; actually purchased fresh unfrozen since the frozen one were cooked; it isn't really good for dwarf cichild which is the bulk of my stocking but i did feed it to the loaches; the black ghost knife fish went crazy for it but no one else would touch it. In the geo tank (wc...

Looking at pictures of Golden Eye Dwarf Ciclids, when I saw a picture of electric blues is anyone familiar with how Electric Blue Acaras came about???

You must have the smaller form (and i know they will stay even smaller in a small aquarium; ,my a.pucallpaensis i raise in a 10 (f1 and f2) are much smaller than the parents ); the large male i had was way too big for a 10; and he was quite aggressive towards other males. Of course if you pack...

Looking at pictures of Golden Eye Dwarf Ciclids, when I saw a picture of electric blues is anyone familiar with how Electric Blue Acaras came about???

How many have you managed to keep together at one time in what size tank; when i tried keeping multiple males or females at low numbers it didn't go well.

Looking at pictures of Golden Eye Dwarf Ciclids, when I saw a picture of electric blues is anyone familiar with how Electric Blue Acaras came about???

I have several nannacara over the years; there are two colour morph in the wild - one more gold and one more blue; they are quasi polygamous; the female is the sole raiser of fry and she goes ballistic when guarding her frys. Cory doesn't understand a very angry mom; however if you just keep the...

    “Not the Cupids” again…

So far they are staying very small; I have some 3 year old m. Festivum which as you say are quite large and chunky. Also the pattern on the m. egregius is nicer; i have a breeding pair (same size as the ones in the picture) that constantly show 'stress' pattern. Last but least the behavior of...

    “Not the Cupids” again…

If i had to do it over i would use finer substrate; one day i might still shovel out the substrate and replace it with pool filter sand. The substrate in there isn't super coarse but it could be finer. The tank is 4ft x 4ft so it will be a project... I'm getting too old to lift hundreds of...

    “Not the Cupids” again…

My b. cupido are among the most timid fishes i own; I added a group of m. egregius (great fish); which helped calm them down. I would not keep them solo or in a small group; it might help if the tank was setup more like my blackwater aquariums but i didn't start it that way. - the b. wavarni (i...

    Tell me something funny

So here is a fishy funny story. I have some 'young' chocolate cichild around 3 1/2 to 4 inches. One of them constantly puts on stress marking and clamps his tail at times - so today i was watching him carefully (they never do this at feeding time); and he was on the bottom looking under one of...

    What is a tropical aquarium?

A lot of data in places like seriously fish is incorrect and points to warmer temps; also certain species (such as many dwarf cichild) require proper temp for even distribution of sexes when breeding. Of course in the wild they solve this issue with the dominant female taking the upper region...

    Apistogramma cacatuoides took a leap

Well a properly scaped tank will give him places to hide.

    Apistogramma cacatuoides took a leap

Yes; that was my key point he was escaping her aggression; the problem is that if he can't escape she can potentially kill him.

    Please ID?

Tank looks (way) too small for the fish and the hard decoration might leave to the fish hurting itself.

    Angelfish Bonding

occasionally 2 females will bond; i've never heard of 2 males bonding. They do not bond for life; if they fail to breed enough time the female will chase the male away.
