    What are you doing today?

When i was a kid and we had a collie that got thirsty; she went down to the creek behind the yard and drank all the water she wanted... of course when she was inside after spending a few hours playing with the cat (those two loved to play); she would drink out of the toilet - i don't think she...

    What are you doing today?

Hey you are near me - i need someone to change the substrate in my 600 ;) My arms aren't long enough to reach the other side..... In exchange for doing this work you can see an aquarium that is a different size !

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

electrical conductivity. The way a TDS meter work (which is really just an ec meter) is it measure the amount of current in the water and then presume the level of disolved solids. I am not sure if there is a 'true' tds meter or if all tds meters are ec meters; i know that all the cheap tds...

100 gallon reservoir tank for my RO unit on the way...

Not big enough; you need at least 500 like mine :) Also lookup well pump great for getting water from there to here.... I went to my plumber and said i want polyp piping from my basement to my work room; and he said polyp what is that - and i said it is like flex but more resistant to...

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

Anyway at least for the wc sa fishes i'm keeping; i think i'll just keep my target of 50 ec or lower and not worry about kh/gh ;) [The bulk of the tanks are below 25 ec; for those who don't know about ec 50 is 25 tds because there is no such thing as tds all your tds pens are really ec pens...

Marimo algae balls… what are these steel wool, of the plant world, and how do they fit in our aquariums???

I'm not sure i agree with this part "exception from the rule about avoiding algae" as i find certain algae beneficial to my fry raising. It seems to hold a lot of this and that the frys can munch on not to mention they can hide in it.

What you should know about discus

Yea i'll get more aggressive switching them to better foods in a few months - right now they are a little thin - one died i think from starvation but i'm not sure. As mine are wc it could have been something else (I had it 6 months before it died); the others are doing much better since i've...

Marimo algae balls… what are these steel wool, of the plant world, and how do they fit in our aquariums???

So here are a couple of pictures back first then front; on the front the long line of green is a piece of driftwood; as the stuff mostly only grows on hardscape (driftwood, sponge filters, heater) it doesn't grow on the substrate or glass - something happened in the tank that caused all the...

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

Well this is way off topic; but yea ro water is great. My discus tank has become a forest of plants despite being ro water @83. Depending on the aquarium et all i use a combination of leaves/driftwood/peat to stablize the ph. My discus tank has no peat in the filter but the ph meter suggest the...

Marimo algae balls… what are these steel wool, of the plant world, and how do they fit in our aquariums???

Well i have one 10 that is totally coated in the stuff and the frys and shrimplets love hiding in it. To be honest the amount of covering in the tank has become annoying (will post a picture later today); but i think i'm going to transition this tank to blackwater and that will hopefully get rid...

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

I think the reason I got ticked off is people measure ph from the tap; but many water companies will artifically raise the ph to protect older pipes; much like the issue with bacteria acidic nature of water has other implications. However this artifically raised water might actually be soft and...

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

The bacteria aspect is important for different reasons however a fish that require soft water that has been transition to high ph (and the different types of bacteria found in alkaline water) should be fine as long as the water is soft. Now there is a partial contradiction here because...

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

One huge pet irritation is when people say "well my tap water is ph x so i should buy this kind of fish"; well it is bull horns ground down to mash. What is important is the chemical composition of the water - usually broken down to kh and gh. Now my comment is a bit of an over simplification...

    What are you doing today?

Could you replace the power head with a circulation pump; btw how wide is the tank - it is hard to tell the distance across the middle but it might be too small for an adult angelfish despite the gallons. [link to circulation pump - they fit on the side and come in all sort of strength]...

Here is a picture of a couple of them showing the full fish - they can be moody but today they are just chilling. The dark fish near the top is a young piece of chocolate; the angel on the right is at the other end of the tank so approx 9 feet from the m. mirifcus; and the tank you see past the...

    What are you doing today?

Personally i'd fill the hex 1/2 ways plant some nice species that will grow emersed out of the tank; and add a few small critters for the bottom layer. Of course i don't own a hex, i'm not you and well it is easy to say what i would do even if i would never actually do it.

Yes the black and white striped fish is a Mesonauta mirificus (I have 7 around 3 years old).

Today i did a most horrible thing - something you should avoid at all cost - putting in a piece of zucchini - rather very large piece - most dangerous thing you can do; i'll leave it to the viewer to identify everyone:

What you should know about discus

It isn't the colour that make them adaptable; indvidual fishes esp those added later can take a while to accept their new surrounding. I find that it is not uncommon for it to take 3 weeks though some fishes will adapt faster. I would not muck with water chemistry or whatever for it unless it...

What you should know about discus

I found that having a spare male is mostly safe - now and then he will try to get the female to switch males but ultimately she will decide. Having a spare female can be quite another issue depending on how vicious your female is - when bounded i have found a spare female is frequently killed by...

My 120 is over-stocked; it has 9 angels and 5 krobia and a few pleco. One good thing si the angels spend so much time looking at the krobia they forget to fight.

So… please tell me these are actually Cupids…

You know i was going to say something simliar but recently my two group of angels have been really passive; i have 5 in a 600 with plenty of room to separate if they get 'mean'; and to be truthful they seem to collect in a corner now and then to fight but not nearly as bad as I seen them do in a...

So… please tell me these are actually Cupids…

I believe they do best in a group of 5 to 8; As other said it is definitely a cupido and not a wavarni. I have 7 and they are just happy little kids as long as i stay far far away.

I have 8 discus in a 200 (24inches wide and 72 inches long) and i consider it too small. Also i feel some of the information in the original post is not correct.
