    A suggestion

Somebody else suggested this a while back, but I thought it was a good one so I'll bring it up again. @dascrow @Chad I sometimes enjoy clicking on people's location in their name tab to see where they are. Would it be possible to do something like that with award-winners? Click on "Fish of...

    What are you doing today?

First day back at school with kids today. Yay, the meetings are over, for now! Always fun getting started with the kids again

I'll agree with you on Kansas...Eastern Oklahoma and northern Arkansas--the edges of the Ozarks--are pretty, rolling hills, nice lakes, and dense forest. The Cowboy Hall of Fame in Okie City is pretty cool and worth a day. I've never been to North Dakota, at least not that I remember. Seems...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Elk don't really eat sagebrush--maybe a little in the winter. They eat the grasses that grow between that sage brush. That's probably why they taste so good. Mulies will eat sage brush, but they generally prefer other stuff if they can get it. They rely on it heavily in winter because there...

    Badger's 150g Rio Negro/Orinoco Flooded Rain Forest

Snapped a photo mid-water change. All is looking good. I'm going to have to remove a couple of those red lilies in the middle--they have gotten HUGE over the past couple months. And maybe thin out the swords too. The angels are acting a bit cramped. Nice problems to have.

    10g Badis and Firefrog Palace

Well, this is kind of a bummer. One of my frogs is missing--haven't seen it in a couple days. The other one is acting rather lethargic and not eating much. Just like the first batch in the big tank. I am not having good luck with these things...

I'll certainly whack a grouse if I get the chance. We have blue grouse and ruffed grouse around here, and both are extremely good eating. But I don't really go after them specifically.

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Something like that, yeah. We were scouting--looking around, getting to know the country, figuring out where the good habitat is and where we're likely to find elk. It helps with the hunt, plus it's just fun to watch elk doing elk things.

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Elk season opens next weekend, so my hunting buddy David and I went out and did some scouting yesterday. It was a banner day! We saw at least nine, possibly as many as 12 bull elk, all in one valley, and all before 8 a.m. (a few of them might have been repeat sightings) Considering that I...

I end up calling them all "Cat," and they don't seem to care a bit. But like I said, these things are important to the ladies in my family.

    What are you doing today?

The girls got a Russian Blue cat from a shelter last weekend, so we've been trying to think of a Russian name for her. She's very silver and has a very serious, thoughtful looking face with bright yellow-green eyes; she looks just a bit other-worldly. (Russian Blues normally have weird faces)...

    Not crazy about them ?

There are a few types I'm not a big fan of. Here is my completely unscientific list. Guppies and (especially) platies. They just bore me. Wild-type sword tails are cool, though. Would really like to try those again. Fancy goldfish. Their inability to swim normally makes me sad. Fancy...

    What are you doing today?

This was a weird one. A text that at first seemed like a legit wrong number, but they obviously wanted to keep the conversation going, asking me what line of work I was in (a friend that was over at the house suggested "feline audiology," which worked brilliantly), asking me to send pictures...

    What are you doing today?

I did some truly outstanding work (if I may say so) in the "Trolling Scammers" line. Kept the person rolling for several hours, gradually ramping up the silliness factor until it seemed like the conversation had gone about as far as it wanted to go. Currently smoking a leg of lamb for supper.

Gerbils are delightful, curious, active, and peaceful (they turn into hunters if you throw them a grasshopper). They also don't drink a ton of water so they are very non stinky if you keep their cages clean. You can get one, a male-female pair if you want babies, or raise a pair of females...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Yeah, you're telling me. Angus cows are delicious. I've eaten beef from this ranch before and it's good stuff. But my friend that owns the cows would probably be rather upset if I shot one. Ranchers are weird that way. I've never eaten sage hens; some people love them and some hate them...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

OK, that's it for now. The speed goats won this round, but I'll be back after them with my rifle in October. September 1st is the opening of elk season, and we'll be hunting some new-to-us areas of the mountains that I'm excited to explore. If we don't score the first weekend, we'll be bow...

The view from camp. It ain't as nice as the mountains, but it'll do. Nothing like the peaceful, easy feeling of being alone for a long time in wild country.

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

The antelope quickly got used to my blind, but they didn't particularly like the looks of it either, so they simply got their water up the hill a ways. That's the trouble with hunting a flowing water source. If I ever hunt this way again, I'll spend more time scouting and find a small water...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Cows are extremely helpful. Was there an antelope getting a drink back there? I'll never know. After a few hours (and a few well-thrown rocks) they accepted my presence and wandered off.

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

While re-setting up my blind that first evening, I met one of the locals. He was giving off distinct "What the #&^! are you doing in my yard?" vibes. I kept a discreet distance, and we quickly developed a mutual understanding: I leave him alone, and he doesn't gnaw my toes off. It worked for us.

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

OK, so here's the problem. My first setup was at a tiny water hole, about a quarter mile down the hill from a big stock tank where the cows were hanging out. Antelope generally don't want to drink where the cows drink, so I figured they'd be using the small water hole. But the antelope didn't...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Generally, no. The steers are curious and playful and friendly, in their dumb, annoying cow kind of way. I've never had any trouble with them either, even the bulls. But when you get a huge, grouchy bull sticking his face right in the front of your blind, staring you down and grunting at you...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

A huge bull showed up the first afternoon, moaning and grunting in an extremely grouchy manner. Angus are a pretty mellow breed as cattle go, but this old guy got my heart pumping a bit when he came over and cast a baleful stare at me, right in the front of my blind. I didn't get any close-ups...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

Sage grouse. These, too, showed up around sunrise every morning and kept me company for a while, announced by their calls, which sound like prissy old ladies coughing discreetly. "Hem, hem, hem." They're fun birds to hang out with. Really big too, about the size of a large chicken or a...
