    55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

Why oh why do they make submersible pumps with 4 foot cords? What the heck are you supposed to do with that???

    55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

The waterfall pump has had a pinhole leak the past month or so, which I was able to contain with a small tub that I emptied out with my weakly water change. Last weekend, I finally took it out, greased the gasket, and sealed the back of the canister. Hooked it back up tonight, and it blew...

    What are you doing today?

Blowin' in the wind, my friend. The answers are blowin' in the wind.

    Weather

Cloudy and sprinkles of rain today. The air is already clearer. Hopefully the mountains will get dumped on and our firefighters and asthma sufferers will both get some relief.

I'm sick and tired of people talking about the 'PH' a fish needs

True. My local water is very soft, but tends to have a fairly high pH. Most softwater fish seem to do fine, but they seldom breed. I suspect that, for the more finicky species, you have to get both right.

    Wingless Fruit Flies

I've wondered about that. I've had my culture going for around seven monthe, and no fliers yet...that I know of...

What's this floaty stuff that looks like dust or fibers?

Some kind of little worms. Probably came in on some plants and spent a while quietly doing their little wormish things before they became numerous enough to invade the water column. I never worry too much about critters like that, though there is the (slight) possibility that they're something...

I think there's something very large living in Loch Ness. I doubt it's a plesiosaur, because those breathe air, and they'd get spotted. Whatever is down there, it has to be some sort of bottom feeder. My guess is that there are a few relict individuals of an otherwise extinct (or at least...

🐡 FOTM VOTE NOW - October 2024 Fish of the Month Contest(Tetras)

This is my red phantom tetra. He doesn't have a name, but I'm open to suggestions. I got him in July of 2021 as part of a big school, which was wiped out by a bad ich outbreak the following spring. This one was the sole survivor. For replacements, I decided to go with more outgoing rosy and...

    What are you cooking?

This was an old herd bull, so he's a little gamey and tough. But generally, elk are considered tastier than deer. I like both. I add a bit of beef suet to my elk burger, about 10%, just enough to keep it from drying out on the grill. I add bacon to my sausage for the same reason, but more...

    What are you cooking?

No TJs in my state, so I guess I'm out of luck. I love feta cheese, but I agree with you about kale. I'd be fine with it, if only it didn't taste like kale.

    What are you doing today?

My old pond had groundwater that would seep in underneath it. It was fine as long as we kept it full--the weight from above would keep the ground water out. But if we didn't keep it full in the springtime, or during irrigation season, the liner would pooch up from underneath.

Snow in the forecast for Friday! Yippee!!! Hopefully it will put out these forest fires. I can only imagine how happy the firefighters must be to see that in the forecast. Hopefully it won't change.

Hmmmmmmm, you just might be onto something there. Anyway, I believe @gwand and the rest of you know that when I point out that someone is strange, I mean it as a compliment. I don't really know any normal people, but if I did, I suspect they would really bore me.

    A Walstad Tank...

Hm, I have three of my own at the moment, and I occasionally help the Badgerling with her two. Probably going to tear down the 10g soon and merge it with the 55.

    A Walstad Tank...

The only real benefit of soil is that it gives an ammonia/CO2 boost right off the bat to get your plants growing really well. I have three Walstad tanks running right now with straight sand, and they're doing great. Looks like the tank had a decent run though.

    What are you doing today?

Yeah, La Bottine Souriante is a fun band. I used to have one or two of their CDs but it they disappeared in one of the moves. Their combo with the Chieftains, I think it's called "Le Lys Vert," is the stuff of legend. Murder ballads seem to have been an important part of Celtic (and...

    What are you doing today?

Yesterday I did a huge water change on the 150g, got various elk skulls and jawbones soaking in hydrogen peroxide solution to whiten and de-stinkify them, and took the Badgerling to the ER with a severe, worsening, multi-day headache. Turns out it was just a bad sinus infection; pain is...

Just got back from a jam session. There's a regular group that gets together every Saturday, and I've been intending to join them for several years now. Need feedback on this 120-gallon tank

Yeah, they'll breed quite a bit. I only had one ever make it to adulthood, this being a community tank. Males are more colorful than females. It's easy to tell them apart once they're grown. I usually try to go about two to three females to every male, but in a larger tank I'm guessing you...

Congratulations, Connor. You'll do a great job. See you at the party this morning. Which reminds me, I should probably try to find a substitute teacher...do you think my kids will notice when I don't show up at school? Also, @Chad , could I borrow the TFF Leer Jet this morning? It's a long...

Boiling elk leg bones and jaws. I removed the hooves for bow tip overlays and such, and the jaws will be made into knife handles. I already removed the sinew for backing bows and tying together arrows.

    Tell me something funny

A tough old Badlands rancher once told his grandson that the secret to long life was to sprinkle a little gunpowder on his oatmeal every morning. The grandson did this religiously, and he lived to be 93. When he died, he left 14 children, 28 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren ... and a...

Need feedback on this 120-gallon tank

Pearl gouramis get to around 4" (closer to 3 in my experience). The males will get a little aggressive with each other while breeding, but in a big tank with plenty of room to spread out they should be fine. Otherwise they are quite gentle. I kept five in a 55g with harlequins and even tiny...
