    "Interactiv" fish

Nah, I've never seen any aggression in them, toward one another or other fish. I always kept them in groups of at least four, and never in a tank smaller than 55g, so for whatever that's worth. They'd probably do great with T. albonubes. I've never kept rainbow shiners, but if they're typical...

    "Interactiv" fish

Panda Garra are one of my favorite fish, too. I think they'd be fine with most tetras. M. opercularis? I'm not sure. I've thought about adding a pair to my river Paludarium, but I think they're too aggressive. Seriously Fish says they sometimes live in upland hill streams, so I suspect...

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

There's a creek in Nebraska called "Dismal River." It didn't look particularly depressing to me, but first impressions can deceive.

What a cool find, and what a nice thing to do for your dad. Hope he loves it.

    Juniper/sinew kid's bow

I finally finished this bow! The bamboo skewers are complete failures as arrow tips; they came apart on the first shot into the target. I'll have to go pop off a few .22 rounds tomorrow and use the shells to make blunt arrowheads. But wow, does this thing zip out those cane arrows! No...

    What are you doing today?

We got in around 10:30 last night, after an exhausting but wonderful week at a youth camp in Nebraska (Did I post a video of some of the singing? Can't remember. But it was amazing.) Left at 8 a.m., and gained an hour going west, which makes it...15 hours on the road, I think? There were...

    What are you doing today?

In spite of all the world could dish out, I have completed another trip around the sun today. Wow, what a great day it was, too, for reasons having absolutely nothing to do with my birthday. Going to bed with a full stomach and a full heart. 💕

My school's counselor likes to say that clarity is kindness. If it were me, I think at this point I'd just flat up tell him, "No, I'm not willing to just do it for you. If I do, I charge $30 an hour. (Or whatever the going rate is for that kind of work) If you want free help, I'll help...but...

Pallet fencing is very effective and looks surprisingly good if your pallets are all the same height. I once built a wind break for our garden out of pallets. It almost looked like I knew what I was doing.

Empty tank - Deep clean or leave it ?

I'd clean it all out, spray it down with hydrogen peroxide, and let it dry. Any hard decorations that you cant to keep can be treated the same way.

What's up with the weirdly conflicting info about Sparkling Gouramis?

What Gary said. I've kept this species, so here are some observations. They are quite social if given the opportunity. And yes, they do croak and creak at each other...it is very entertaining. They are a bit territorial, but not aggressively so. I'm sure you could keep one alone--they...

Empty tank - Deep clean or leave it ?

If he died of a fungal infection, I would probably sanitize the tank if it were mine. It is true that these pathogens tend to be present in the tank, and only strike when a fish is stressed or otherwise weakened. But if it were mine, I probably wouldn't take the chance.

    Badger's 150g Rio Negro/Orinoco Flooded Rain Forest

(For those of you just tuning in, this tank is in a busy dentist's office. Lots of parent and kids look a the tank, so they like to have a little write-up like this to make it more interesting. It's nice doing something that makes people happy)

    "Interactiv" fish

My angelfish definitely interact with me. They appear to be very curious about goings on, and when I'm in the tank they always want to know what I'm up to. This seems true of many members of the cichlid clan, and many predatory fish in general, as Gary described above. They aren't fish, but...

    What are you doing today?

Spent a good part of the morning helping a younger friend work on building a bow. Unfortunately, we discovered a fatal flaw: A deep crack in the belly. I'm glad it showed itself before he put any more time into it. Broken wood is part of the process, sadly. If you ain't breakin', you ain't...

    Badger's 150g Rio Negro/Orinoco Flooded Rain Forest

Did an updated "About this aquarium" card, which I will apply when I go over later this week. Also got some black, wave-patterned window film to replace the old table cloth that currently serves as a backdrop.

I plan on cleaning out the garage workshop today, gearing down from floor-building and gearing up for bow-building. Guess which one is more fun. Also mowing the lawn, picking up the Badgerling from Pioneer School, where she is an assistant teacher, seeing a massage/physical therapist to try...

Well, the flooring is done. The ladies are painting the new quarter round trim, then we can move all the furniture back. Jeepers, but that was a lot of fun. I think I'll celebrate by taking some more ibuprofen.

    What are you doing today?

Still working on flooring. As with most of my home improvement projects, it is taking far longer than expected, but barring catastrophe I should still get it all done today. This vinyl flooring has a wood grain with recurring patterns. To avoid putting them too close to each other, so looks...

    Pond questions

Wow, that is beautiful! That whole stream/bog is just one gigantic bio-filter! The statues wouldn't be my thing, my personal taste being a more natural look, but if the plants and critters don't care and you and Linda enjoy it, who cares what I think. Really beautiful work! If I...

more "Suckies"... don't these look angelical???

I believe they're twig cats, Farlowella sp. Very difficult fish to keep alive, in my experience. I much prefer the Sturisoma species, usually called royal Farlowella or whiptail cats. Much easier to get along with and much more active and interesting, too.

    10g Badis and Firefrog Palace

I've been feeding my frogs crickets lately and they are devouring them. Makes me think I haven't been feeding them nearly enough, and it even makes me wonder if the frogs in the big tank got lethargic and disappeared because they were starving! These things eat A LOT! Tonight we caught a...

It isn't the same as laminate, though if you do laminate definitely do waterproof. Ours has a very realistic wood grain that gives a peaceful feeling to a room. I really enjoy rooms with wood, brick, stone, natural-feeling materials. But who can afford hardwood floors these days? This is the...

It's good stuff. Waterproof, which is great for both kitchens and aquariums! Relatively soft to walk on. Fairly easy to install once you figure out what you're doing. Make sure you get good quality stuff, with at least 12 mil wear layer. 20 is better. Watch some YouTube videos, invest in...
