    Today is National Dog Day

When I had dogs a license wasn't needed. But nowadays we do need a license to keep a dog.

    Today is National Dog Day

I wasn't aware of this special day until this morning when one of my neighbours was giving treats to passing dogs and their owners... Unfortunately, I don't own any dogs anymore. But I'm okay with it. But I still miss my dogs for a serious number of years now.

    Molly fry went outdoors

They're doing great outdoors. The colors are becoming more diverse with the UV-light they get from daylight.

My Koi is trying to Jump out of water, why?

Koi have a torpedo shaped body which tells us that they need space. In general, a fishtank is not big enough to keep them their whole life in. Koi are fast growing fish. So, at some point they need to be in a bigger body of water like a pond. If they don't have enough space in their environment...

    Aquarialand

This past week I've paid a visit to an lfs in the capital city of our province. When I was surfing the internet for some stores in my area, I came across this one. Just an hour away from my place. It's a small store but all the basics that are needed were in stock. They've got a freshwater and a...

    Albino Pelvicachromis pulcher

About 4 inches. Usually, I would go for the wild colors. But in some way I just don't mind this being an albino.

    Not crazy about them ?

Well, it seems that in Asia working on the imperfection of a fish (like exaggerated fins, for instance), seems like perfection to them. They love crazy stuff. Despite of the fact that I myself am also from mxed Asian descent, I must admit that I'm not a fan of such imperfections either. I'm...

    Endlers sexing/breeding

I forgot to mention that also killifish belong to the Poeciliidae family. So, the Poeciliidae family consists of livebearers and egglayers.
  26. emeraldking

    Not crazy about them ?

We also do this with other wild livebearer species other than goodeids. This year I've been to a short trip to Mexico as well. I've brought back some wild platy species (Xiphophorus maculatus and Xiphophorus variatus) which I've collected. The very large ones I've caught were put back into the...

    Endlers sexing/breeding

Well, "Poecilia" is the genus where they belong to. "Micropoecilia" is a subgenus of "Poecilia". All belong to the Poeciliidae family. Being a member of the Poeciliidae family doesn't mean that all members are Poecilia. There are many genera that belong to the Poeciliidae family. Yes, one can...

    Endlers sexing/breeding

That can be done at an early age. But I do have to admit that it needs a good eye... Take a look at this illustration I've made. This enables one to sex fry way earlier before the males show their male traits. Well, pure endlers are actually real wild guppies but differ in DNA from wildguppies...

    Not crazy about them ?

I keep and breed those too. Our national livebearer society breed several kinds of splitfins in order to rerelease them in their natural habitats. For as you probably already know, many of these species are endangered in the endemic areas. We support a project in Morelia in Mexico.
  33. emeraldking

    Not crazy about them ?

Thank you. That one was taken in Venezuela. I was younger overthere and slimmer... Well to be honest, there are also livebearer species which are better off in softer water. The hard water rule for livebearers is a generalization and based on the commercially available common livebearers.
  34. emeraldking

    Not crazy about them ?

This remark is based on the common livebearers that are commercially available. For there are also a serious number of livebearers that have a small batch of fry and a number of them are even hard to breed.

Got a pleco question… can different L numbers breed???

Knowing from own expereince, those L-numbers can crossbreed with another and have fertile offspring.
  38. emeraldking

    Not crazy about them ?

I can only say that I'm glad that we all have our own preferences in fish choice. This makes the hobby more alive. How boring would it be if we all have the same preference? Then there will be hardly something new to discuss.
