Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

I will have to rehome the parents as I don't have a suitable tank for them (as I found out from this tread), so the first part isn't a problem. I do have one fry at over 3 months old though, and if they become sexually mature at 3mo, I'd need to separate them from the other fry when other fry...

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

That's really specific, thanks! Would you suggest taking pictures and/or isolating them to improve visibility?

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

OK, I will try separating and comparing them. They move around so much it's hard to see in the tank

How can I tell with fry? I have a hard enough time with adults as is

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

Ok. One last question - I'd like to keep some of the fry, at least until they get older and stronger, in the 10g. I have 3 sets of fry, one at 3m, 2m, and 1m old respectively. Do you think they will be ready for breeding before they outgrow the tank? And if so how can I tell?

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

Huh. Seems like that would make pretty much any result inaccurate then, no? Also, I really want to keep the mollies, but if a 10g is just not doable, my only other options at present are to return the fish, or keep them in poor water conditions. I would hate to do so, as they require a much...

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

Oh ok, I didn't realize that, I just assumed anything over 100% was too much. I appreciate your input! Can you tell me why the calculator would be saying a 10g is fine for sailfins then?
  10. G

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

Ok, the calculator says for the mom and her fry the tank is overstocked at 115%, and for two adults the same thing. And even if I just kept the adult female, she's still pregnant which would mean several dozen additional fry soon. This is not looking good. (On the plus side though, the calc is...

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

I have been! And one of my mollies is a lyretail. Unfortunately there is no lyretail option. However the calculator does have sailfin mollies as an option, and they are WAY bigger on bioload and filtration level than regulars. Do you know if it's more accurate to use sailfins if I have...

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

OK, I'll try manually entering sizes on the Calc and see. But out of curiosity how big are we talking here?
  13. G

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

Just 1? The aquarium stocking calculator says a 10g is good for 3 and doable for 4. Is it really that far off?

Stocking Mollies in 10g & Fry Maturity

Pretty straightforward, I have two lyretail mollies (1m1f) and about a dozen fry between 1.5 and 2.5cm, they need to move and I have a 10gal I'd like to use long-term. I would like to keep the male if possible, and my LFS won't take the fry until they are about 2cm, so I will have periods with a...

    Flashing multiple times

Tl;dr: When fish flash several times in a row, what can this be evidence of, and how can it be narrowed down? Background: 30 gal tank, lightly planted with gravel bottom, mostly hornwart, duckweed, swords and java ferns, lots of driftwood. My fish are 14 cardinals, 5 pygmy corys and cherry...

Cherry Shrimp & High GH Effects

Currently making some stocking decisions and I want to keep some cherries in the same tank as my mollies. My water GH is in the 300ppm range, which is perfect for them, but I haven't found any clear information on the upper limits of cherry shrimp GH. Does anyone have experience with keeping...

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

Well, just got an API GH test kit and it took 18 drops to get the correct color. Unless the chart is misleading or im misunderstanding, 1 drop=1 degree, so about 305-325ppm. Good enough for the mollies, but too high for everyone else right?

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

Yes, currently from reading up on what you've been describing I think I'll keep my mollies and shrimp in one tank and move the cardinals and corys to a 10 gallon. Hopefully it will not be too small but that's all I have. Just realized, I will also have to lower the GH from now on since I will...

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

I'm getting a test kit, but assuming my GH is too low, what would you suggest to do to raise it?

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

OK, I found a 10 gal I can use. I'm assuming if you keep tetras and neons with your corys the cardinals should move with them. In that case, is 10 gal too small for 14 tetras and 5 corys?
  21. G

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

GH is between 150 and 300ppm, hard to tell with test strips, as the range between colors is quite large towards the higher end. PH is about 7.4. Is there a more precise GH measurement you could recommend? Also - it seems like the GH and PH requirements for Molly's and cardinals are different...

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

I cannot thank you enough for your detailed response. I have been busy during the week but finally had time to respond today. On the substrate - I have heard about this many times, but have been told by my pet store that every tank needs corys regardless. Are they really that important to a...

    Mysterious Shrimp Die-Off

Unfortunately I never found the bodies of 4 out of 5 of the dead shrimp, so I cannot confirm what they looked like. The one I did find was not discolored, and I had seen it alive within the past 12 hours, so it had died fairly recently. Seed is an aquarium biofilter starter.

    Drastic Pygmy Cory Behavior Change

Hello, I noticed something interesting in my dwarf cory's behavior and wanted to know if anyone had any input. I have had my tank for about 7 months now, and for the first 3 months my dwarf corys were very active, constantly foraging on the bottom and swimming to the upper layers of the tank...

    Mysterious Shrimp Die-Off

Around 6 months ago I had an ich infection in my tank, which cost me some fish, however none of my shrimp seemed to be affected. Shortly afterwards, I noticed my 6 cherry shrimp were becoming more reclusive, spending less time foraging around the tank and mostly staying inside the hollows of my...

What are the do's and don'ts of a post-ich aquarium?

I have found a lot of help online for what to do when facing an ich infestation, which helped tremendously. However, I have noticed that most articles and advice fail to cover what to do AFTER the ich is gone. So, simply put, I'm interested in knowing the do's and don'ts of post-ich cleanup...

    Molly Behavior and Feeding Issue

I was going to say 'as a side note' but considering it relates to my original question... My female molly is pregnant. Looking at her this morning, she has a large squared-off belly and darker coloration. I assume this would probably explain the mood swings, eating, aggression and hovering by...

    Molly Behavior and Feeding Issue

VERY helpful, thanks. I don't know why I heard clean the filter and thought clean the whole thing! But I won't be putting the media back in this instance because I'm using chemicals. Will update when I'm good. Thanks to everyone who helped, I know this got wildly off topic, but I really...

    Molly Behavior and Feeding Issue

Ok, I am going with the chemical treatment as I don't have an airstone. One last question - do you just have to submerge the whole filter in water to clean it? Or are there more things you should do? Also I am pretty sure, but just wanted to check: when you said clean it in aquarium water, you...

    Molly Behavior and Feeding Issue

Sorry for the resolution, these are the best I could get. Luckily I got it early so hopefully it can be minimized. Interesting that you say salt does nothing, most websites recommend aquarium salts as the first thing. Getting Ich-x and an adjustable heater as I didn't have them before. Will...

    Molly Behavior and Feeding Issue

This keeps getting better and better. I woke up and now 4 of my cardinals are suffering from ich. And the treatments say to use salt, well I should already have salt in the water from the softener. So what gives? And do you know if Ich-X is the next best way to treat the tank? Side note I know...

Are my pygmy corys glass surfing?

Also, bonus question if you're up for it: my female creamsicle lyretail molly just started doing this today. She can spend up to minutes at a time here, then leaves for a while, only to come back to do it again. It looks like the shimmies, but I looked closer and she's also sucking on the glass...
