New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Ps: just checked parametres and pH is now hovering around 6 from what I can tell, ammonia is at between 0.5- 1 ppm and after a week still no Nitrites showing.... should I add some bicarb soda/ coral piece or just let it be as is and hope pH not to low for the BB....I really hate this part of...

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Hi there and thank you for the great message of support and your information. If not every other day, how often would one do a water change? on ADA site they mention to do large water changes every day...so would once a week doing 50% be the right amount or should I keep an eye on Ammonia and...

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Thank you so much! yes, we are thrilled with the layout....just hope all the plants start growing!! ha ha... It was a real neck breaker getting everything in there due to the limited space and the awful little hole on the top...took me 3 days to get it right.... Thank you again for the lovely...

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Hi guys. Well, the re-scape has been done and I am rather thrilled with it. Can't wait for things to get growing a bit and this ammonia to clear up a tad... One question though regarding this ADA soil, I have had readings ranging from 0.25 ppm to 4ppm of ammonia in the last week and yet no...

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Well, all I can say is best of luck. I am certainly no expert but if you need help please feel free to ask....I found that with my Edge it was hard even with just a sand substrate, but....we got there in the end after making a few mistakes.... Thank you so much also for the well wishes....got...

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Thank you for your reply Gruntle. Yes, in theory, yes but what concerns me is the fact that ADA has so much ammonia that it may overwhelm my filter's bacterial colony and also my native tap water Kh being so low...will the cycle stall and stay in limbo? my Ph in the tank is 7-7.2 Ph, tap water...

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Thank you so much! That is just terrific motivation. Will indeed keep up with updates and am hoping Byron will chime in soon with his amazing knowledge and advice. Thank you once again... Very kind.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I remember Byron was most helpful last time, I was more curious about the specifics of the ADA amazonia soil cycling but will indeed look that up. Thank you,

New aquascape with Fluval edge using ADA amazonia

Hi everyone. Glad to be back here. I remember last time how generous you all were in advice given to such a "newbie". Well...2 years later my Fluval Edge has been a great success and has brought many great moments, baby shrimp, baby Cherry barbs, all very motivating. I have you guys to thank for...

I see, of course...forgot about ammonium. I will research more on where to get these mini fish. Hard to find here.Thank you Byron...updates soon.

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Thanks Byron. One question though...would not adding a group of 5 or 6 of whatever overwhelm the system? I mean, would the ammonia not get crazy high all of a sudden? and if so, what would one do to bring it down? I am sure a large WC would do it but at the risk of sounding lazy, I would hate to...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Yes, I see what you mean. Could I add Corydoras? maybe 2 to keep substrate clean? And in regard to fish stocks, how many to add? I would rather have one substantial school of one type than a mis mash of different things....I would feel it more harmonious that way....your thoughts?   And, as far...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Thank Byron. I am planning on nano fish such as ember tetras or chilli rasboras? neons? cardinals? would love a pair of Bolivian rams but am sure everyone here would be typing in uppercase and bold lettering "NO".....lol what would you recommend?  And jag, that is something to think about...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Ok well, I will just leave it alone and start adding 1-3 fish and see how I go....if there is a large spike in ammonia after the fish are introduced what is the right steps to rectify this? water changes? and if said BB are not active at low Ph should one add zeolite or some other source to...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Thanks guys. Great to hear from you. I do have floating plants, amazon frogbit. As for the rocks, I thought they may add the buffering to the water? as they leach the carbonate hardness to maintain the Ph at a certain level? am I way off here? ha ha I guess I would like the aquarium water to be...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Ok, well, I had to rescape the Edge once more as could not clean it at all the way I had it prior and that was a week ago. Have re added some shrimp in the new set up and apart from one death this morning all seem fine (I hope). Ammonia has creeped up to 0.5 ppm yesterday but today it is at 0.25...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Hi everyone. Well...been a little while and have slightly re-scaped the aquarium and added some new plants and a bit of gravel that was given to me that co ordinates with the colour of the sand, mostly placed on the higher bits of the scape for a bit of texture. Look good and there is an added...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Byron, a last very basic question to see if this is a solution to my issues or a further headache....in regard to adding a small amount of crushed coral to my filter to essentially raise Kh and Ph slightly to say...Ph 6.5 (which I would think would be suitable for soft water fish) will the...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Ok Byron. I believe I roughly understand the obstacles ahead. But in your opinion what should I do next? should I consider another substrate that will provide more Kh to aid in buffering/stabilising Ph to a desirable level? if so, what is best for the Edge? Should I not stay with inert...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

It is alkaline as it fizzes with vinegar.... Will try it out... A lot of aquarists use it here.. Guess it counters water softness? Thanks Byron. I'll continue making more poor choices no doubt..

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Thanks Byron. That all makes sense. I have bonsai stone at work and that seems to make water harder. Do you think using these in hardscape would help? With hardness and KH? At the moment I have basalt boulders...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Yes, Byron the Kh and Gh are in the low levels here, hard to get an accurate report from the water board but it seems that Gh is around 15-20 mg/l and Kh is 11-16 mg/l...? From every other forums regarding our water here, most say that tap water comes out of tap at around 7 Ph but quickly drops...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Another update....apparently when I took out last shrimp...there was another...took that out....there was another. So a total of 4 were still alive and left 1 that I can see in the tank. Perhaps it was the Hydrogen peroxide on the wood that maybe was toxic? maybe it has now been converted to...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Ok, have got home tonight and one shrimp left....I took him out and he will join others in my pond. Aquarium as it stands has the following parametres:   ammonia 0-0.25 nitrite 0 nitrate 0 Ph dropped to 6 temp 24C (75.2F)   This may sound macabre but, should I leave dead shrimp in the tank? for...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Thanks Steven... But not sure of KH... Have not got test kit for that... Would have thought having lower Ph then KH would be low? I assume GH would be low too?

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Hello Byron. The peroxide was done before adding shrimp... Come to think of it, I did read that peroxide takes up to 24 hours to turn into plain oxygen so maybe it was toxic even after drying in the sun..there is only a small amount of that mould left... All other wood is clear. Not sure what to...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Hi Byron. Well, the last surviving shrimp is out this morning... there were two or three last night, but found a dead one already. I added 1 ml of Flourish after introducing shrimp, I cleaned all the wood with Hydrogen Peroxide and soaked it in a bucket with hot water and the peroxide also...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Well, after all this I decided to add 10 cherry shrimp to the tank....what a heartbreak. They stopped moving around after about 2 hours and this morning found 3 dead and the others are nowhere to be seen....I assume dead too. Tank has all readings at 0 and a Ph of 6.4 with a temp of 25.5. I...

    Fluval Edge, No Cycle.....

Hello Byron. This is going to sound very dumb after all your input and teachings but I am a tad confused...I wonder if you can clarify something.  Apparently I am doing a silent cycle right? so when I test the water all parameters should be 0 yes? and if they remain as such due to not adding...

    Fluval Edge Aquascaping....help Needed.

Thank you again Byron, and of course thank you Far_King for your input. Byron, took out Vall tonight and would you not believe it...that mould stuff on the manzanita is back! right after I scrubbed it clean and sprayed Hydrogen Peroxide on it out of the tank to try and kill it... it is floating...

    Fluval Edge Aquascaping....help Needed.

Thanks Byron. Yes, the Oak leaf I put in (shredded a bit) looks great!  As far as floating plants, I like frogbit but with the Edge design plants seem to get pushed under when they reach the filter overflow into tank.....tried duckweed and that looked awful as it kept being pushed under the...

    Fluval Edge Aquascaping....help Needed.

Well, mine is running at around anywhere between 6 - 6.4 Ph.... and yes, you are right, hatchet fish are a no no.... Added one shredded oak leaf tonight to see how it looks and must say, very happy with the look....now to get this thing cycled and up and running...lol

    Fluval Edge Aquascaping....help Needed.

Thank you. I was thinking (with some advice from the forum members) to be adding a small shoaling group of boraras or ember tetras, maybe some cherry shrimp for movement amongst the driftwood and perhaps some pygmy corydoras. I would love a dwarf bristle nose pleco but understand that they get...

    Fluval Edge Aquascaping....help Needed.

Hi everyone. Well, I must admit, this forum has been very good to me as a lowly beginner at all of this aquarium and cycling and aquascaping caper and especially some members have been more than generous with my questions. I wonder if I may ask you serious aquascapers for some advice on what to...
