    water changing

I add AquaSafe to tap water and store it for 24 hrs. before doing water changes. This gives the water time to warm up to room temp. Then I heat the water to tank temp. by placing a 1 liter pyrex pitcher in the microwave, pouring back into the storage bucket and repeating until the temps are...

    heaters-not working??

A great thermometer to use for fish tanks is a ditigal probe model. You can buy them from restaurant supply stores. Mine measures to one tenth of a degree and displays temp. in either F or C. It only cost $14.95 and I've had it for over a year without changing the battery. I have the temp...

    Temperature during a water change

I have 6 - 5Gal. buckets that I use to age/store replacement water. I treat tapwater with AquaSafe. I have a 1 liter Pyrex pitcher which I use only for fishkeeping. When I'm ready to do a water change I take a pitcher of water from the bucket and heat it in the microwave. After heating I return...

    Freshwater fish

The Angel Fish will definitely eat the Neon Tetras. Discus and Cardinal Tetras are ok to keep together.

    Controlling Nitrate

The only thing you can do (That I know of) is to get a R/O (Reverse Osmosis) unit. The units are pricey but a good one produces water that is 99% pure. It does need to be buffered before being put into a tank. There is a lot of good info available on line. You can even rent them. Hope this helps.

    Major Emergency

It sounds like some kind of chemical/poisonous substance got into the water. I had a problem with MTBE (Gasoline additive, leaked out of an abandoned storage tank and got into the village well) in the tap water. If some noxious substance got into your tank, then the only thing you can do is...

    Using an uncycled hospital tank

I keep a 5G. Hospital tank setup at all times. It has a corner box filter powered with an air pump. The tank is bare bottom. I bought two male "feeder guppies" and keep them in the tank at all times. Whenever I use the tank for quarantine/sick fish, I put in a used filter pad from my 55G...

    filters for bettas

I have a betta, 3 white clouds and 2 panda cories in a Hex 5. The tank comes with a built in filter hood and light. All I added to the setup was a submersble Visitherm 25W heater. I do weekly 25% water changes. All the fish have been together for over a year. A very pretty and fun tank to watch.

    Temp

I have those sticky thermometers on my tanks also and I just use them to get a general idea of tank temp. What I would recommend to everyone is a digital temp. probe. They are available at restaurant supply stores, fit in your shirt pocket and are not expensive (Mine cost $14.95 US). At feeding...

What Can You Do About Hard water?

If you are going to buy distillted water, a cheaper alternative (in the long run) is to buy a R/O ( Reverse Osmosis) water treatment unit. They are a little pricey but the good ones will remove 99% of all disolved substances. I use a mixture of tap water mixed with R/O water. Hope this helps.
