How can I treat new plants for snails?

I hear you that the snails are helpful, and I would love to have a few of them to do those tasks in my tank ... but there are suddenly hundreds of them! They're in the sponge inside my AQ filter! I'm worried that they'll soon reproduce to the point that my filter can't keep up. I'm pretty sure...

How can I treat new plants for snails?

Title pretty much says it all. My LFS has snails in the tanks with the plants. Usually, we just rinse the plants off pretty thoroughly before planting them. But now my tank is overrun with MTS, which must have come from the store via the plants. We're still trying to add new plants to outcompete...

Thank you, and thanks for the tips on dealing with the MTS.

They survived a 3.5 day power outage!!

I would love to get a whole-house generator, but they're way out of our budget for now. We've been talking about adding one since the 2021 storm, as well as installing solar, but those are really expensive out-of-pocket options, at least here. I was hoping for something easier and less...

They survived a 3.5 day power outage!!

So what can I do to get rid of them ... and not bring back the black beard algae we were fighting several months back? 65 gallon (36" w x 18"d x 24" tall) Current parameters while recovering from long power outage: GH: <120, KH: 40 pH: 7 - 7.5 NO2: 0, NO3: ~30 (before routine water change) NH3...

Also, my tank is suddenly overrun with Malaysian trumpet snails ... where did they come from and why are there suddenly hundreds of them?!

And, I =think= the ammonia is OK? The degrees of green on the color chart are too subtle for me. Can someone tell me if this is 0 or 0.1? Maybe 0.5? In any case, the PH is around 7, so I don't think it's toxic, but it does need to be removed, which we're working on. The fish still seem OK.

Alas, the tank is in a room at the back of the house, so quite a few feet away from the car in front.

They survived a 3.5 day power outage!!

I got the power back on after 80+ hours down. I was terrified to look into my 65g and find nothing but bodies ... but they're all, mostly, alive! I'm so happy! When the power went down, we immediately wrapped the sides and most of the top of the tank with blankets and towels. For the first...

    Algae explosion after new light

Thanks! They have definitely become everyone's favorites. As soon as the weather cools down some, we plan to add more, but it's too hot to transport fish right now.

    Algae explosion after new light

Thanks, we're working on adding new plants ... that was the reason for getting a better light in the first place. Alas, we can't lower the temperature of the tank below about 77, the same as the inside of the house. (It's gotten over 100 (F) here almost every day since mid May, and that's the...

    Algae explosion after new light

OK, that makes sense. I'll take it out (it's just a pouch that goes in the HOB filter). I don't know why the LFS person suggested it, as it was DH having that part of the conversation.

Uh oh. Why is this another risk?

    Algae explosion after new light

Thanks for the insight, Byron! I'm reducing the light time again (7 hours) and shortening the sunrise and sunset intervals to 30 minutes each. We also added some new plants (moneywort and wisteria) and something that floats (frogbit?). The second filter is overkill but after we went through a...

    Algae explosion after new light

Also, it may be hard to tell but there are two HOB filters on this tank, which might preclude some types of floating plants?

    Algae explosion after new light

Thanks for the feedback, Byron! I'll attach a photo of the whole tank below. I can control the intensity of the light; it is currently at 70% for white, 70% red, 70% green, and 10% blue, but I can lower it. I've actually lowered it from 90% to 70% over the last two weeks (10%/week) as well as...

    Algae explosion after new light

Hi again, I recently splurged on a fancy Fluval AquaSky 27 watt light to replace an old light hood that was getting dimmer by the day. Wow, I can see my plants and fish now! But now, 3 weeks or so later, I can also see my anubias is just covered with dark algae of some sort I've never had...

Is the python actually worth it?

I'm glad I backtracked enough to find this thread; it's exactly what I need. For context: It's getting harder and harder for DH to do WCs using 5 gallon orange buckets, and I flat out can't carry the full buckets outside to dump in the garden much less lift them high enough to refill the 65...

My kids hated iReady with a white hot rage in 7th grade! I hope you can work it out, but I think getting mostly As during the chaos of the last year is something to be very proud of!

**Question of the week** | When’s the last time you did a water change?

33 percent, every other week, usually on the weekend, for a pretty heavily planted 65g that is understocked. Sometimes bigger if testing suggests nitrates are creeping up.

    Hardy corys for warmer tanks?

Nice! Our house is 50 years old, so we have to watch the energy usage carefully.

    Hardy corys for warmer tanks?

Yes, we have AC, but we keep it set to 78 in the summer, with ceiling fans, or our utility bill is astronomical. We're in Central TX, but I love Galveston!.

    Hardy corys for warmer tanks?

What kind of hardy and reasonably priced corys could I keep in a community tank that runs 77 - 78F? I'm in Texas, so I just can't cool it down more. Pretty heavily planted 65 gallon: 7.3 pH 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 10-20 nitrates 180 GH 60 KH source water is quite hard, but there's a huge piece...

    Hello

Thanks for all the welcomes. The tank is recovering from an unexplained total die-off after running for years with no issues. We now have 8 redeyes and about 12 ghost shrimp to maintain the good bacteria; all seem to be thriving, but sometimes it's hard to find the ghost shrimp. Water...

    Hello

Hello, I'm new to the forum, but I've had tanks since I was a kid. Currently DH and I have a 65gallon breeder with mostly tetras and plants, which has been running for years. I really like kribensis (kribenses?). My tank is not optimal at the moment, so I'm heading off to an appropriate forum.
