    Molly and Platy Bullies!

Yes, all of those things have a great impact on if he'll chase her or not but some males are so focused on one fish it's crazy. I must have 12 females and 3 males the younger males like to spread their seeds but the one only focuses on the one female. Luckily shes about twice the size of him and...

    Molly and Platy Bullies!

Some fish are just really interesting with this sorta stuff. My three spot would always chase black platies, she really hated blacks. She grew out of it and now chases bristlenoses only when they're on the glass "get off me glass!!". Could be a particular colour. Or more likely he's just hitting...

    10 Gallon stocking ideas.

zebra danios def does not work in a 10g bro. You could hit up the pygmy cory gang but a safe bet would be endlers or guppies. What you tryna go for anyway?

Idk know what it's like in Indonesia but here in NZ selling fish is really easy and by the look of those betta you could get a reasonable price for them, definitely sell them.

First of all, take a deep breath... So you have a 10 gallon you can divide, a five-gallon you could divide and a three-gallon for one. That's five. If you're going out to the hardware store you can just pick up a couple of plastic storage containers like 10 gallons. I don't know your heating...

Questions about water parameters & testing kits

To add to utahfish, ammonia, nitrate, nitrate is all nitrogen, the stuff you hear in the news when they talk about eutrophication. This is basically the waste of the fish and I don't want to write an essay on the nitrogen cycle so I recommend looking at one of 'aquarium coops' videos about the...

Large Fish (10" minimum) for 180 Gallon?

That is a low-key inaccurate way to measure it. For me at least the pH and hardness is very low according to the council website from the water source but due to pipes and sitting in the water tank for a while it becomes very hard water.

I’ve finally decided on stocking....subject to you lots approval. My indecision is final etc.

They do have a rep for being nippy, maybe they'll be far better in a school of 10 or more (bonus they are pretty cheap compared to others). I was going to keep a big school in my 55g but instead got a school of Odessa barbs which you simply cannot beat the colouration.

    My first tank

I agree you shouldn't keep acidophiles in hard water and vice versa, yet this isn't a line we're talking about, there is a large grey area between the extremes 6.0 - 8.0. Then again you have to account for the range at which the species occur, the larger the range generally the more varied...

    Filter size

You have to counter in the loss of flow rate as the water travels through the tubing. Depending on your tubing length it may be actually 700lph or 800lph

I thought it was widely accepted that silvertip tetras can thrive in water up to 20 dgh

    Filter size

Go with the 1400 lph for that size tank, most of the flow is reduced heavily by pumping it back into the tank I have a 1000lph on a 215l and its perfect so 1400lph on a 270 sounds about right. And don't bother with the UV as they don't work properly on canisters, they do however severely reduce...

    My first tank

It should be said that Bristlenose' are so widespread, possibly originally a soft water fish (so widely bred it is hard to determine origin) thrives in hard water as it may also occur in. Similiar with pristella tetra, yet they are adapted for massive fluctuations in hardness, possibly why they...

    My first tank

I like to source all my fish from local breeders, in the majority of cases, they are bred in the same water conditions which is hard water in my case. Hard water species are bred for generations in conditions similar to their native spectrum and likewise, thrive in hard water. Also seriously...

I’ve finally decided on stocking....subject to you lots approval. My indecision is final etc.

I disagree, odessa barbs love hard water in my experience. I keep mine in a 3ft tank and they have plenty of room even though they are growing quite large. Never had them nip platies, they didn't touch the three spots long, trailing fins either. My main point is they relish hard water and in...

    Puffer fish species?

Firstly, marine salt is what you're looking for and a hydrometer (mixing water sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is). I've seen ramshorns being gobbled up by them and they breed fast enough. A large HOB whatever you prefer, or a canister for that size tank or larger (if you can get...

    My first tank

I disagree, although they can be rather boisterous they should do fine in that size tank but then again you may be right and they could pose an issue when older. All those fish can adapt well to hard water so I wouldn't worry about that at all, most kribs will breed in those parameters no problems.

New here - something's up with my cycling

That's a little bit weird. All I do when I'm cycling a new tank is chuck in a decent amount of food, add some stability and it usually cycled in a week. The only possible problem I'm seeing is not enough ammonia and just leave it at 2-4ppm then u should start seeing some action within a couple...

    Algae During Cycling

please, please, please! change out the gravel for something else like pool filter sand or play sand, whichever ones cheaper in your area. If you like it then fine but my eyes struggle with that stuff, and its 4 times the price of what I just suggested.

I’ve finally decided on stocking....subject to you lots approval. My indecision is final etc.

In regards to your stocking, it's pretty darn good. I keep platies and Odessa barbs together in a 215l with bristlenose and hopefully soon a shoal of three spot gourami. The Odessa barbs are a bit ruthless at feeding time but seem to leave the platies alone, wcmm would be perfect with them. From...

    Puffer fish species?

A good salinity is 1.010 for it, yet juvenile fish can tolerate freshwater. If your going to keep it (which I recommend as they're full of personality) a 20 gallon will be large enough to accommodate one but a 23 gallon would be even better as they get to be around 8cm, shellfish is a must with...

    Hard Water stocking ideas

There are also many natively diverse water chemistry wise fish which can adapt very well to hard water. Bristlenose are great for this and will breed in most water conditions without much intervention, pristella (or x-ray) tetras are a classic example and will spawn in hard water. A better way...

    Hard Water stocking ideas

For liquid rock water conditions and those dimensions, there are still quite a number of options. Lake inle has a wealth of fish which would relish your water conditions, Emerald dwarf rasbora and asian rummynose come to mind here. Shell dwellers may still be an option but would have to be...

    G'day, new to the forum

G'day, i've been keeping fish for over 4 years now and have contracted mts. I currently have a 215l, 90l and a 38l setup up but I'm in the process of setting up a fish room (fish shed really) because I have many empty tanks at this point, I'd be happy to receive any advice. I'm hard water gang...
