    How To Adjust Ph

OK, so I know it says you aren't supposed to mess with pH unless its really bad, but the pH of my tap water is below 6.4 and I don't know how far below. My LFS (actually a really really great place with good info) recommended pH 7.0, but it causes these incredibly annoying algae blooms...

    Very Sick Angelfish

I realize this fish is probably done for, but its worth trying. I just picked up a sick angelfish from the tank at my school. Nobody there knows much about fish so they have a fish expert come in and run everything once a week. They just added a bunch of new fish, including neons and dyed...

    Sick Betta

Tank size: 2.5 gallons pH: 6.4 ammonia: .50 (looks like) nitrite: 0 nitrate: 0 tank temp: 70 degrees Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): Fish listless, floating on side on top or bottom of tank, color on body mostly gone, all scales...

    Is This Ammonia Ok?

The guide to fishless cycling says that if the ingredient list contains surfactants you don't want it, but if there's no ingredient list you can shake the bottle and if no foamy bubbles appear then its ok. I found ammonia that lists ammonium hydroxide and a surfactent as the ingredients, but...

How To Filter 70 Gallon Tank?

So I'm planning to get a 70 gallon tank filled with nothing but corydoras catfish (weird, but I have an obsession with these little guys) and I'm wondering what would be the best way to filter it. I love love LOVE the penguin biowheel filters, and they make one that is supposed to filter up to...

    Pig-nosed Puffer

I'm thinking of getting a Pig-Nosed Puffer and putting it in its own tank (I know just by looking at them that they would probably eat ME if I was in that tank). I simply enjoy how horrible and ugly and evil these fish are, and I want one! I have a 20 gallon that I will cycle and overfilter...

Do I Need An Expensive Aquarium Stand?

I'm looking into getting either a 50 or 70 gallon tank and I've found that they, with the water, will be heavy enough that just sticking them on any old shelf won't work, but the proper aquarium stands are SO much more expensive than the other stuff and I'm wondering if there's a cheaper but...

Just Had An Interesting Thought Re: Uncycled Tanks

So, lets picture this scenario. Beginner buys a few fish and a tank and sets it up the same day. Beginner then finds out about cycling, freaks out, and doesn't want to loose thier new fish. The store won't take them back and they have no friends to take their fish while the tank cycles. The...

Penguin Bio-wheel Filter In The Uk?

Don't know about availability in the UK, but biowheels should never be replaced unless they break. That's the great thing about them, you never loose all those bacteria.

    Fish Playing Dead

I accidentally messed up the biological filtration system (I know, I know, I've mentally smacked myself many times for this) and so the ammonium is pretty high, hovering around .50 ppm. The nitrates are low and stable, nitrates are in the safe zone. The pH is 6.4, fairly soft water and low...

    Fish Playing Dead

:( Is there anything I could do? Or do I just have to let nature take its course from this point?

    Fish Playing Dead

So, today around five or so I went in to feed my fish (4 corys in a 10 gallon tank) and one of them was upside down, pale, and not moving. I had to go, so I came back a few hours later to change the water and remove the unfortunate cory (and mourn, I was actually very sad about this) and the...

Introducing Live Plants To A Fish Tank

What do I need to do when introducing new plants into a fish tank? A friend of mine said I should rinse them in a very diluted bleach solution to get rid of parasites. Is this true? Anything else I need to think about when adding live plants?

    Mixing Cory Species?

Just the four corys I mentioned earlier in that tank. Two leopards, a schwartzi, and a panda. Someone on here recommended that I get a different but similarly marked species if I wanted to be able to tell them apart.

    Mixing Cory Species?

My tank is 10 gallons, and I don't really want to overcrowd them or anything. I was told that the schwarzi and leopards should get on fine because they have very similar markings and they do seem to be schooling fine.

    Mixing Cory Species?

I recently got two leopard corys and then today, more or less on impulse, I added a schwartz cory and a panda cory to the tank. The leopard corys and the schwartz cory seem to be getting on fine but the panda cory seems to be a little lost. He'll swim with the others for a bit and then go off...

    Sexing Corys?

I'm trying to sex my leopard corys and while I've read that females are plumper I'm having trouble finding any pictures that would help me figure it out. Does anyone have any pictures of female and male corys for comparison?

Please Help Me, My Catfish Is Dying!

Sorry, I can't help you, but you may want to post this in the emergency forums as well. You should get more immediate responses there. Good luck to your catfish!

    How To Measure Temp

All I've got in there are a few corys, so I figure a mercury floating thermometer should be ok. Thanks!

    Suitable Tankmate For Julii Cory

I recently set up a tank and bought one Julii Cory (or it was labelled as such anyway) without researching enough beforehand (whoops) to know that they need company. I would prefer to be able to tell my fish apart, so I was wondering if an albino cory would be a suitable buddy for this guy or if...

    How To Measure Temp

I was wondering what's the best way to measure the temperature for a tropical freshwater tank? I've kept very sensitive reptiles for years and I know the strip thermometers are horribly inaccurate for them so I wouldn't be surprised if the same is true for fish. Are the floating thermometers good?
