    Mixing Barbs

Ok thanks for your input guys. Think I'll be sticking with Ruby barbs on their own then. I didn't realise they were less aggressive which is interesting. Edit: just to add the tank is 350 litres and 4 feet wide so hopefully that'll help any potential issues.

    Mixing Barbs

I'm looking to get a mix of tiger, green tiger and black ruby barbs (probably 3 each). In particular I'd prefer to get just male black ruby barbs due to their colour, but I'm aware that they may not get on (or even display their full colour) if not kept with females. Which leads me to question...

Can Anyone Tell Me What This Is?

Well I removed it as a precaution yesterday (glad I did now) and put it in a container with water. Guess salt it is then. Hopefully he was the only stowaway.

Can Anyone Tell Me What This Is?

After putting in some plants I noticed this guy on the glass. Any idea what it is, and whether I should remove it?

    Better Nitrate Test?

Still waiting to hear from Southern Water, will chase them up if I don't hear from them soon. I tested water from my water butt as well and it was around 5ppm from what I could gather. I guess rain water has trace amounts of nitrates too.

    Hardy Fish?

The fish I've settled upon are Tiger/Green Tiger barbs, a single Red Tailed Black Shark, German/Electric Blue Rams and Cardinal Tetra (really not keen on changing this to Neons even though I know they're considered easier). I may consider Clown Loaches with the idea of rehoming them after they...

    Hardy Fish?

So am I better off putting in hardier but more "aggressive" fish in first, and then more peaceful but less hardy fish in after? I'm fast learning this hobby is a statistics game lol.

    Hardy Fish?

I read quite often that some fish are not hardy and therefore should not be put in a new tank. However when the term "new tank" is used, does it refer to one which has literally just been set up, so would therefore be a completely inappropriate fish for a fish in cycle? Or does it also include...

Like something you'd see in a fancy magazine. Nicely done, very festive! :D

    Better Nitrate Test?

My water supplier is Southern Water and their website is refusing to give me the details currently. So I've phoned them up and I'm waiting to get a report back. In any case I'll still need a reliable test kit for testing the aquarium's nitrate levels in the future. Wilder do you not test...

    Better Nitrate Test?

I'm currently using what I gather is the staple of test kits in this hobby, the API freshwater master test kit. All the tests seem fine accept the nitrates test. My tap water seems to have high nitrates, but the test colouration for this area is ridiculously difficult to decipher. I've taken a...

Hair Like Substance On Water Wisteria

Well one of the lights is definitely around 6500k, a basic phone app told me, but even to the naked eye I can see a slight blue tint in it comparing to a light temperature chart. The other is closer to 4000k with its yellow tinge. The photo gives a fairly accurate view of the hue. To be...

Hair Like Substance On Water Wisteria

Thanks for all the info, I shall have to do a bit of research over the coming days. Have ordered Seachem Flourish and some Tetra substrate tablets which seem to have decent reviews for an affordable price, fingers crossed. As you indicate, likely to be a trial and error experience as I go. As...

Hair Like Substance On Water Wisteria

The 4 lights are split into two switches, so I could leave 2 off and 2 on if that would help? As for nutrients, I was looking at Seachem Flourish (partly as I'm using Prime and Stability currently), would that be a good idea to start using? I'll have a look at substrate tablets as well. I'm...

Hair Like Substance On Water Wisteria

Hi Byron, thanks for getting back to me. The lights are the standard ones fitted on the Juwel Rio 300, T5s I believe - two "high-lite day" and two "high-lite nature" lights at 54w each. The lights are on roughly 8 hours a day. Volume is 350 litres. Dimensions are 1.21m width by 0.66m tall by...

Hair Like Substance On Water Wisteria

As in pictures, I noticed this when I first got them but it wasn't overly noticeable. However now it's far more prominent. Does anyone know what it is? Should I leave it or is this a problem? Thanks.

    Finally Setting Up Rio 300

I shall look into larger species of anubias, already have anubias nana and quite like the colouration but I don't think it grows all that large :) I've made some major alterations to the layout to accommodate a sandfall or "underwater waterfall" to the right. Haven't got the equipment yet to do...

    Finally Setting Up Rio 300

Thanks for the kind words guys, will post updates in the next week or so. I would like to add some taller plants for the backdrop yes, hoping the amazon swords will grow a bit too. Ideally something with dark leaves and easy to care for, any suggestions? Thinking of getting some java moss on the...

    Finally Setting Up Rio 300

Well I'm finally in a position, upon moving, to set up my aquarium after 3 years of actually having the tank (torturously boxed up the entire time). However the long delay has given me plenty of opportunity to reseaerch and learn, though I'm glad these forums exist to help out still! I've just...

    Filter Intake Behind 3D Background

I installed a 3d background, one which would have been virtually impossible to stop water from flowing behind, so to avoid water stagnating entirely there I've placed the filter intake behind the background. Which also had the positive effect of not seeing the tubing either, having hidden it...

    Api Master Test Kit

Would someone be kind enough to take a photo of the instructions card that comes with this kit and post it here. I inadvertently threw mine away. Kept the colour chart at least! Lol Thank you! :)

    Problem Getting Filter Going

Still doing a little thinking but I'm looking at Cardinal tetra, a single red tailed black shark, a couple of electric blue ram, tiger barbs, red line torpedo barbs and possibly clown loaches. I have a Juwel 300 (350 litre). Installed a 3D background, inline hydor heater and I'm currently...

    Problem Getting Filter Going

Left it alone for a while and it started making a lot of gurgling noises on its own while still off. So emptied the prefilter as you suggested, put it back together, and after a noisy start (presumably air going through the system), it's all working! :) Thanks for your help Richard, much...

    Problem Getting Filter Going

More than likely some stupid oversight of mine but I can't seem to get my new filter running properly. It's the eheim pro 3 2075. Everything is connected and ready to go but I've had enormous difficulty priming it using the suction aid button. Water will trickle down but never automatically as...

    Striking Blue Fish Suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, I'll take a look into them all. Hoping to go to a local Maidenhead Aquatics next week so I'll be having a gander there too :)

    Striking Blue Fish Suggestions

Hi guys Wondering if anyone here could give me some advice. I have a Juwel Rio 300 (350 litres) coming soon, and I've earmarked a few fish I like as a shortlist, but most of these are of the red variety and I'd really like to get something in there with quite a vivid blue. Looking at getting at...

Can Anyone Identify This Fish For Me?

Hi guys I'm hoping someone can identify this fish for me. Came across it completely by chance while researching something else and because it was on a Japanese site, even with Google Translate, I couldn't make heads or tails of the text. Cheers

    3D Background

Don't own a fish tank yet, still doing my research and a bit of saving but I came across videos of 3D backgrounds and I think a lot of them look pretty amazing. So I'm quite certain I'll be looking into getting one. I've only come across one online retailer that's dedicated to making them though...

    Completely New With Questions

Hello all I'm interested in getting an aquarium and having very little space, I've been looking into the Fluval Edge (46 litre version). I understand from reading that smaller fish tanks are generally more difficult to maintain for a newbie, but I believe with enough knowledge before going into...
