Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

Is it? I certainly find it horrifying to think of what those poor fish went through in being chewed up like that. I find it horrifying that this happened to them because of something I did, in well-intentioned ignorance, truly thinking they would be better off in the large pond than in a small...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

Videos: Last night, recorded from above. (They turned out not to like floating flake food, so I didn't give them any more.) Can you tell which fish is blind from watching them? I couldn't, until about the two-minute mark when I realized that one fish had gotten separated from the rest, looked...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

Yes, I have heard of blind and even eyeless cave fish. That's a different kind of adjustment because it happened over generations of evolution, and they live in an environment where there's no light anyway, so they're not at any disadvantage by not being able to see. I'm watching out to see...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

I know it was Colin_T who recommended the fish should be put down, and you who asked for clarification of what he meant. All this happening on a public forum, my response was meant for everyone reading it, not just for any one particular person. From what I've seen of Adrien in the past day and...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

Again, this is an INDOOR pond. It's in my basement. I live in an urban neighborhood. There is a creek within walking distance for a human, and there might possibly be crayfish there, but it's way more than 100 yards away (I'd estimate 1/2 to 1 mile), and to get from there to my basement, any...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

But then I would have missed a "teachable moment": an opportunity to point out to people that having a disability does not make an individual or that individual's life any less worthwhile. All 10 injured fish are now in the convalescent tank. They're all swimming around, appear calm and...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

This is an indoor goldfish pond in my basement. It's an above-ground pool with a bare bottom and a few plastic decor items. There's no way any fish could get in there by itself, and nowhere one could hide if someone were to put it in there. The only fish there are goldfish. I am a disabled...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

The fish that has lost both eyes is swimming around better than some of the others (it has less extensive tail damage than most of them), was able to locate and eat food when I fed them just now, and like all the other injured fish in the convalescent tank, seems quite comfortable and peaceful...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

Horrors: One of the fish has lost both eyes. The other one I noticed before does have a damaged eye. The remaining 29 babies in the pond are coming back upstairs *tonight*. They'll have to go back into the 75 gallon tank. I also have a 50 gallon one I loaned to someone who doesn't need it...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

Okay, so I have just rounded up and inspected the tails of all 49 baby fish that were still in the pond. 41 have intact tails. Of those, I moved the 12 smallest ones back into the plastic tubs, figuring the smallest ones would be more vulnerable. 29 intact-tailed babies left in the pond. 7...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

I tried something like that initially when I first introduced the baby fish to the pond, not because I thought they were in danger of being eaten alive, but because I was concerned the adult fish would eat all the fish food before the babies could get to it. I got a big clothes hamper (Sterilite...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

But goldfish don't have teeth to bite things! They have pharyngeal teeth back in their throats, but not teeth at the front of their mouths to take bites out of things. I still can't figure out how they're doing this.

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

The only fish I have are goldfish. I know big goldfish eat little goldfish, and I had the babies separated until I *thought* they were big enough to be safe. Only the largest ones have been returned to the pond. And apparently they *are* too big to be eaten entirely. Nobody told me the adults...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

I think I probably already threw away the Kanamycin. That would explain why I can't find it even though I have a recent memory of seeing it. I probably checked the expiration date and got rid of it. The fish was just lying on the floor of the hospital tank in the kitchen, trying to blend in and...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

I have no idea how long the tail has been like that. I first noticed it this evening while doing a water change in the pond. If I had noticed it earlier, I would have separated the fish earlier. As you may recall, I have almost 300 baby fish, divided between four smaller tanks plus the largest...

Goldfish with tail rot (or injury)

This is one of my baby goldfish, hatched July 21st, now four months old. This is one of the larger ones that has been living in the 440 gallon basement pond with my 9 adult fish and the biggest of the baby fish that I deemed large enough to be out of danger of being eaten. I was just doing a...

Good news: With 25 fish removed, carbon in the filters, two airstones added, and salt added (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons), the fish in the big tank are lively and are eating well. I have not found any dead ones since Saturday night. 22 baby fish were added to the pond on Sunday. I have not been...

    Calculating tank size?

Thanks, I will try to remember to bookmark that when I'm on my laptop. Fortunately it seems the plastic tub is not leaking after all. The leakage was coming from water splashing out of the back of the filter, which was not level. I have stabilized the filter and marked the water level with a...

    Calculating tank size?

I'm not a newbie, but I've just had to pull out the first tank that was given to me 5 years ago to house my fish, which had been rescued from a trash can after the end of the State Fair. The survivors of that rescue are now living an indoor pond in my basement, and a few months ago presented me...

Actually the "plain salt" I have is Morton Canning & Pickling salt, which is just sodium chloride--no iodine, anti-caking agents, or anything else added. And I am too tired to calculate amounts and dissolve and add it to tanks tonight. That will have to wait until tomorrow. Flop2 had a rinse...

Do you mean put Flop2 back in the tank with the other fish, then a day later move it back to the Epsom salt tank for another 24 hours? I was planning to put regular plain salt in all the tanks after rearranging all the fish who are moving tonight. Should I still do that? Or should I leave the...

    Another dead baby goldfish

I am home with some charcoal, several new filter bags, and a bubble wand. Also several bags of groceries to put away. Once groceries are put away and mammals are fed, I plan to do water changes and see what I can do with aeration in the big tank. And I will try salt in all the tanks. Flop2 fish...

I found the GH test drops. Tried to use them. Instructions said add one drop at a time, shake after each drop, count the number of drops until the water changes from orange to green. Only problem was, it didn't turn orange to begin with, nor did it turn green when I added drops. It was just...

    Another dead baby goldfish

I think I have GH and KH test drops in the basement, but have not used them recently. I'm doing water changes in the upstairs tanks right up stairs tanks right now. (Water parameters in the big tank same as yesterday, except slightly higher nitrates; still no ammonia.) After I get these changed...

I skipped the second water change yesterday. Only did one. At bedtime found another dead fish in the big tank. This evening yet another one dead in the big tank. So far all the dead ones have been in the big tank, but this evening I found one with Floppy-like swimming difficulties in one of the...

I set up the tank September 5th, so everything in it, including the fish, has gone in in the last sixty-something days. Here is a picture of all 293 of them about to be carried upstairs from a plastic storage box in the basement to the 75-gallon tank upstairs. They were so tiny then!

Yes I am well aware that it is overstocked, I just don't know what to do about it! I would really appreciate some help with rehoming these little guys. I won't allow them to be sold as feeders. I can test water hardness later, but I can tell you now that the pH readings I am getting when I test...

Here is information about dangers of garlic and onion for dogs and cats: https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/garlic/ I'm rushing right now and don't have time to look up information about humans or goldfish, but I have read the same as you about garlic being beneficial for both. Maybe...

75 gallon tank. Originally 293 fish put in September 5th. Since then about 94 have been divided among three smaller tanks, and three are known to have died, so a little under 200 left in the 75 gallon, which gets partial water changes twice a day.

Here's a color chart for the API test kit I use: https://goo.gl/images/XLC8aS It's the same fish in both pictures. It had been lying dead on one side for an unknown length of time before I found it. That side probably appears deformed due to lividity. Do you have references about garlic being...

No, do indoor fish need to be transitioned to winter food? The ones in the basement, where the temperature is usually in the 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, get Tetra Pond Spring and Fall Diet and not much else during winter. (Winter hasn't really arrived here yet. It's raining liquid water today.)...

The Tetra Pond pellets have vitamins in the ingredients list. I'm not adding vitamins to the gel food. What vitamins would be suitable for goldfish? I am definitely cleaning poop off the tank floor, and sometimes I see poop in the process of coming out of a fish. With nearly 300 fish, I am not...

They're eating the same pellets and gel food as their parents now. I don't feed broccoli and peas to the babies every day because when I tried it, they didn't eat much. Maybe I will try reintroducing them in small amounts, possibly marinated in garlic first.
