    My 50G Cichlid Tank :)

if you mean nippy as in nipping the other fish then no, they wouldn't dare :) the cichlids are at least twice the size they are quick though, steal all the food if I'm not sneaky about feeding them

    Sick Rainbow, Can't Diagnose

OK well, I'll leave her in quarantine for a week with the treatment, then put her back in the tank, whether her breathing is back to normal or not. Thanks for your help

but would the heavy breathing be a symptom of the turmour? none of the other fish are breathing heavily in the tank

    Sick Rainbow, Can't Diagnose

wow I really didn't realise that's what it could be but ofcourse fish can get tumours I have isolated her and given her the anti bactericidal, I've aerated the water loads so hopefully she isn't in danger of suffocating If it's a tumour then should the gills clear up but the lump remain? if...

    Sick Rainbow, Can't Diagnose

HI Wilder, not sure about ammonia and nitrate, but I did a nitrite test and it read <0.3mg/l pH is 7ish The lump did appear suddenly, no reddness, looks hard to me, and it's definitely beneath the scales. The gills are not red atall, just constantly wide open, can't see any slime No signs of...

[reposted from the "Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids" by recommendation] Hi all, I'm a bit worried about one of my Neon rainbows but can't work out what might be wrong with her. She's in a 100L planted tank with 6 (2 male 4 female) others + 1 red rainbow and 4 tiger green barbs. She's got a...

She's got a lump on one side of her that's been there more than a month - first I thought it was an injury...

    Agressive Keyhole

well the 2 large males each had their own territories Cyril is the older one and the more dominant, Dewey is the same size but the underdog. Dewey had a much smaller territory and chased the 3 females more agressively, Cyril was accepted by the females and rarely chased them. Cyril would wander...

    Agressive Keyhole

I had 5 at first and one was much bigger than the others, but then 1 of the smaller ones grew up fast and he's the troublemaker now - the one I had to move. The other 3 are still all much smaller than the largest. I think the small ones are all females

    Agressive Keyhole

sorry! i meant rainbowfish not rainbow cichlids! I always refer to them as rainbows they are v peaceful, the males are just a bit rowdy with each other in the mornings but nothing like cichlid battles no, after this episode I will not be putting more than 2 cichlids in the same tank again the...

    Agressive Keyhole

well the rainbows are pretty much fully grown - there are 8 of them the barbs still have a way to go, but so does the Keyhole by problems, do you mean problematic for him or the other fish? beacuse even fully grown, none of them are going to be close to his size

    Agressive Keyhole

Following on from my previous thread http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/316766-keyhole-behaviours/ .... I've had 2 male Keyholes getting very territorial and fighting violently in my big tank, so i decided to move the less dominant one out and into my other smaller tank with all my...

    Keyhole Behaviours

ah, it definitely hasn't gotten to that point, they are well matched since I posted the original thread, the larger cichlid has claimed a territory in a different part of the tank :) so they aren't scuffling as much anymore looks like the problem has fixed itself thanks for your comments guys

    Keyhole Behaviours

yeah he claimed it after the change, though it wasn't one of the areas i changed about the food - the problem is that the tetras grew so fast that they are only slightly smaller than my female cichlids, so there's no food that i can buy that will discriminate, its a toughie :/ I tried some of...

    Keyhole Behaviours

Thanks Wills, I have actually recently remodelled one half of the tank so maybe this has triggered the increased aggression(?). I am reluctant to add more black widows as they are much quicker and voracious feeders and tend to nick all the food!

    Keyhole Behaviours

Hi all, I have a 50G planted tank with 9 black widow tetras, 5 keyholes and 1 common plec. I bought the keyholes as a group from one shop - apparently they had been there for 6 months together, they were very young, all about 1 1/2 inces except one that was a bit bigger. I've had them for 5...

    Boeseman's Rainbowfish

according to this website you can http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=16+1911+1951&aid=2519 Discus are relatively docile, and so are rainbows - and rainbows are quick and can generally stay out of trouble no matter what else is in the tank

    My Rainbow Needs A Name

lol he might take offence at being called Gourami Just on another topic, rainbows should be kept in shoals, if you've only got one he may not be happy and never display his true colours - rainbows are very dull if they're discontent

    Bloated Black-Widow Tetras

I've got a shoal of 9 black widow tetras in a 250l (58G) planted tank along with 5 Keyhole Cichlids and 1 common plec.... The tank has been going around 5 months 2 of them are *very* bloated and have been for a good 2 or 3 months - at first I thought it might be dropsy but they showed no other...

    Mega Cloudyness Eruption!

thanks loraxchick I think that's the most plausible explanation - in response to the previous ones, I had just cleaned my filter (with fishwater) and it was working fine. Just got back and the water looks clearer than ever now, all fish are fine :) Will endeavour to clean substrate more...

    Mega Cloudyness Eruption!

OK, I already did a large water change yesterday when it started to go cloudy, but it didnt seem to help :( This morning it does seem slightly less cloudy, I don't think it's going to last long, but I would like to know why it happenned in the first place if anyone has any theories :)

    Mega Cloudyness Eruption!

Hi all, I'm 12 hours away from going to Bristol for 3 days and my tank has decided to become cloudy overnight. It's a 250l planted tank that I've had running for a good 5 months - it's been cycled and reached an equilibrium. I've stocked it with 9 tetras, 5 young keyhole cichlids and one young...

    Pleco Recommendations

I'm planning to get a small pleco for my 55G tank - it will be the last fish I add... At the moment it contains 9 Black Widow tetras and 5 young Keyhole Cichlids Tank dimensions are 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m, I have a Fluval U4. It is moderately planted and has a good ammount of floating plants aswell...

    Keyhole Cichlid Strange Behaviour

Splitting them up is gonna be a bit difficult, I have another tank but it isn't really big enough. He isn't having buoyancy issues anymore but still has his dorsal fin erect constantly. There are plenty of places for them to hide from each other although I do have one male that is a bit bigger...

    Keyhole Cichlid Strange Behaviour

I've had a group of 5 young similar sized Keyhole Cichlids for 1 week (2 male 3 female). I'm keeping them in a 58G planted tank with a shoal of 9 tetras (been in the tank about 3 weeks). This morning one of the Keyholes was acting sick (male), unable to control height in the water and scraping...

    My Rainbowfish Are Fighting!

Ah great! Thanks for that. They seem to have settled down a bit now actually, do I have a safe ratio of male / female in the tank? I ask because when I kept gouramis in my more naive days, I only had 3 males and no females, they kept fighting until the 2 less dominant ones were dead! I don't...

    My Rainbowfish Are Fighting!

I've just set up a 30G planted tank and introduced 8 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) into it yesterday, Yesterday they seemed peaceful and happy but this morning the red finned ones are all beating the crap out of each other! I'm guessing the red finned ones are males and the...
