    New 64L Tank...

Hi everyone! Just got my new 64L "Fish Box" aquarium, all up and running, with the filter and heater installed. I am going to let it run for a day or 2 before I start the Fish-less cycle as described on this forum :). The aquarium came with Interpet Filter Start...but I think the best bet...

So to be safe its best to keep airstones/pumps out of tanks that are planted with live plants? I like the look of the bubbles created by the airstones and ive heard that fish like to swim in them etc. What plants would be suitable for a beginner? Im not wanting too many plants, just enough to...

When I get the tank, I will add in the sand substrate and start the cycling process with the tank covered up so no light can escape. What temperature should the heater be set at during cycling and when the fish that I previously mentioned are added? When adding water, do you add the required...

I didn't know of that and it sounds like a good idea. All you need is the tank with dechlorinated water topped right up, the filter and heater. Then cover the tank to block the light? Whilst that is happening you carry out tests as normal? When the tank is cycled, would u do a big water change...

Thanks for the info about the wooden stands waterdrop, I will be sure to make sure the stand itself is protected by means of plastic before the tank is placed ontop with water added etc. Last thing I want is water all over the living room floor, flooding downstairs :S Andy, I agree they do look...

We went up to ikea but I didnt really see anything that would look decent enough in the living room. There was furniture there that could withstand the weight of the tank + water/gravel etc easily but the price tag on it wasnt easy on the eye (or wallet). Ive decided to go for the Rekord 600...

Just been on the argos website and found the sand you mentioned. For the amount you get, it is cheap. I think I will just give using sand a bash in my first tank. As you said, you can tell when it needs cleaned and by using the gravel vac without the attachment it should be a pretty easy job...

New To Hobby And Need Some Advice...

I watched a video on youtube of someone using a gravel vac to clean the sand in their tank with the plastic attachment on the end. They done as you described and hovered it above the sand and sand did get sucked up but they said once that happens, just shake the tube and the sand will fall down...

Hmm...can you get smooth gravel that will be suitable for the sterbai corys? The sound of cleaning sand sounds harder than gravel and being a beginner, I don't want to over complicate my first tank. I would like a black/white/silver substrate to emphasize the colours of the fish and plants...

Can you have a mixture of sand and smooth gravel to add dynamics to the looks of the tank? Is it the same process for cleaning the sand during the weekly water change using a syphon/gravel cleaner?

Ah right, I suppose that could be an interesting thing to find out what happens :P So the stocking list for the Rekord 600 (63L) reads as follows: Pair of Dwarf Gouramis, 6 Copper Harlequins, 6 Sterbai Corys and once the tank has matured 6 Neon Tetras. Im gona start reading up on substrates...

    Bacteria Supplement

Ive asked this question too and found that the best solution to start the bacteria growing during cycling is to use household ammonia. If you live in the UK then you will be able to find a 500ml bottle for about £1.75 in Boots. Hope this answers your question :P

Yea, I like the look of the sterbai corys. 5-6 would look good I hope. What about male / female mixing? Or would it be better to add just males or just females? Also, in what order would you add the fish and what ones would be best to get first / how many etc? I can't wait to get started lol

So basically any fish that is compatible with the other ones that I have mentioned and is bigger than those would be fine as the main attraction to the tank? Gouramis are nice looking fish. I am still a while away from getting any fish so there's plenty of time to choose but I will be going for...

I have had another look at the serbai corys and I actually like the look of them. I have had a look over the potential stocking list and have came up with the following: 6-8 Copper Harlequins, 6/7 Serbai Corys and still to decide on a "Centrepiece Fish". What makes a centrepiece fish? I would...

This is getting harder lol Since you said the neon tetras prefer a mature tank, would it be better to start off with 6-8 copper harlequins? Then once the tank has matured I can change them or add in some neon tetras. When you say the harlequins are hardy, is that a good thing? I will look more...

What about Dwarf Gouramis? Or 2 Bettas? I prefer the look of neon tetras, would a shoal of about 8-10 be sufficient along with 6 panda corys? Im getting excited about this now lol :hyper:

So that takes angels and barbs off the list lol  . You have given me a list of 24 fish to stock in a Rekord 600 tank (says its a 63 litre tank but I used the calculator on this forum and it says its a 75 litre tank?) Is this not too much for a tank of this size? How does this sound...

Hi, I am thinking of going for this one Rekord 600 as this is the perfect size for the space that I have available in my living room. Went to my lsf today for a better look at their equipment. The shop itself isnt massive, quite small and cramped and the selection of equipment isnt great but there are some products on sale. They have a decent selection of fish and I took a note of the ones that caught my eyes today: Jumbo...

Best bet is ammonia then...I seen it on the boots website, £1.75 for 500ml or something like that. Gona take a look in town today and pick it up for when I start cycling my tank. I was using that ammonia calculator and it gives a very precise amount of ammonia to use based on your tank. Does it...

Ok, had a closer look into biological filtration and found out some more interesting facts. As I said before, biological filtration uses 2 types of bacteria to filter out the nasties. The ammonia within the tank is removed by the bacteria called "Nitrosomonas". It does this by converting the...

I have been looking more towards the Juwel Rekford 600 Aquarium (with stand). I have read reviews on it and people say they have had good experiences with them. Even though it comes with its own Internal filter I can always replace it at a later date with an external and more powerful filter...

waterdrop - I understand completely about taking a slower approach to the hobby and reading/ learning about the hobby before jumping in at the deep end (no pun intended). For me, buying a "starter kit" is a good way to be able to start straight away as soon as it arrives in the mail or when...
