    Anacharis vs. Traditional?

It's a little messy, but I don't mind that look. I bet your fish feel super safe and comfortable!

    Anacharis vs. Traditional?

Wow, thank you for the info. Here are my main concerns: 1) I want to deal with the nitrates 2) I want to give cover to make fish feel safe/comfortable 3) I want to give cover to prevent algae on my low tech plants and substrate/rocks/wood 4) I don't want to keep maintaining floating plants that...

    Anacharis vs. Traditional?

I have no experience with anacharis but have heard great things about it. My water flow is low - moderate. I don't mind it looking too messy as long as they are hardy and make my water parameters healthy for my fish.

    Anacharis vs. Traditional?

Okay, so in my 75 gallon tank, I have 90% of my surface covered in Salvinia natans, a traditional type of floating plant. The issue is that I have to constantly flip over the leaves that are underwater after a water change or after maintenance is done on my other plants. This has really become...

    Advice on Floating Plants

I don't know the specs for my light, but it is a strong light and it's on for around 8 hours. I did a nitrate test and it's at 0ppm. I can't control the intensity of the light so I'll have to reduce the amount of time is on during the day. I'll reduce it to 6 hours.

    Advice on Floating Plants

Yeah, I'm staying on top of water changes, feedings, and not overstocking; just a female betta and a nerite snail. I'll keep an eye on the plants and remove the ones that are really bad. Thanks. I plan on eventually replacing these plants by floating water sprite and see if they do better.

    Advice on Floating Plants

Oh man how did this happen? I thought floating plants were the way to go to keep things healthy in a tank. They are floating ferns species.

There are some that look worse than the ones in the photos. They seem to be dissolving or something.

    Advice on Floating Plants

The floating plants in my big tank are doing fine. The floating plants in my small 5 gallon tank are not, at least they don't look good. The roots are all turning into brown mush and stringy. That doesn't seem normal. I know they are getting enough light and nutrients since they are only one...

    Water Changes in this heat!

    That's a great idea. I'll try that.

    Water Changes in this heat!

Anyone having issues with water changes due to the heatwave? My tap is running around 80+ degrees when my tank is at 76. I do a 50-70% water change weekly and it'll raise my tank temp to around 78-79. Will this stress out the fish? I don't know how else to match the water temp to my tank since...

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

I guess I should have clarified. They went back and forth from schooling and doing their own thing individually. Hope that helps.

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

Update: They are back to schooling and the blue acaras will sometimes join!

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

Yeah I bought a batch of 12 young ones so there was no way to control that. As they mature I'll be able to tell which ones are male and will try to adjust the numbers.

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

My only other guess is that there are more male congo tetras than females? Could that affect the school?
  20. cupofjoel

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

I've read that blue acaras tend to be aggressive toward their own species. Nonetheless, they are leaving the tetras alone, but will run into each other during feeding time, which is to be expected.

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

No the acaras are being peaceful. I've been monitoring them and they are getting along fine.

New Factor on my Congo Tetras?

My congo tetras used to school like crazy. Now they don't. I just recently added 3 electric blue acaras. Now my tetras are scattered, explore the bottom of the tank more frequently and single tetras will go off on their own. 1) Are my congo tetras more comfortable now that the tank has been...

    Am I Overfeeding?

So I have 12 congo tetras around 1 inch in size. I put in food, the amount I think is enough for them and they demolish it all in 5 seconds! I have seen people recommend to feed whatever fish can finish in a minute...that would be way too much if I kept giving them food for a minute! So, how...

    Tank Setup Feedback

It seems I can't get away from adding some type of filter/water movement. I'll abandon the idea then. Thanks everyone!

    Tank Setup Feedback

I have nothing against getting a filter. It's just one more thing I need to service when I might not have the time to service it when it needs to. This tank would be my 3rd tank in the house and I want it as low maintenance as possible.

    Will He Get Food?

I have no doubt he'll get food once he's older, but my concern is that if he isn't getting food because he's being out-competed by the tetras it's going to be a pain to grab him again and put him back in his grow out tank. He's super fast and skittish.

    Tank Setup Feedback

The tank would not have a heater. The room that it would be in is around 74-75 consistently so there would be no need for a water heater. And 100% water changes? I was thinking more like 60-70% weekly.

    Will He Get Food?

Okay, I love my congo tetras. Best fish I've ever owned by far. One observation I made about my little school is that they are extremely aggressive eaters. They leave nothing behind to fall to the bottom or get swept away. My concern right now is that I'm almost ready to introduce a single...

    Tank Setup Feedback

I'm trying to set up a new nano-tank that has no filter. Here is my plan and please let me know since I've never done this before: -Tank capacity (7 gallons) -One male Betta -around 5 pots worth of Anubias Nana Petite -the surface covered in floating plants Would this be enough to keep the...

    Shrimp Stocking Question

I'll try the amano shrimp, but one more question. I plan on adding an electric blue acara to the tank eventually. Will they terrorize or eat the amanos?

    Shrimp Stocking Question

I know nerite snails are great, but I hate how they lay eggs on everything. I currently have 12 congo tetras in there.

    Shrimp Stocking Question

Well I have a bunch of waste and detritus that settles at certain areas of my tank that don't get swept up ever since I removed my wave maker. I was thinking of amano shrimp.

    Floating Plants and Surface Scum

I could do that, but I have too many plants to make an enclosure like this. The only other option would be to create some sort of barrier on the surface with straws to keep all the plants on one side of the tank, but wouldn't that also keep all the surface scum on that side too? Keep in mind I...

    Floating Plants and Surface Scum

So after hearing about the crazy benefits of floating plants they are now covering over 60% of my tank's surface. This has caused a slight issue with my surface skimmer that cannot clean the scum off anymore since the plants now block it from the scum. Does anyone have any ideas for a solution...
