demonsoni can be very agressive towards each other they may have done each over in or like you said they may have been in a poor quality tank before you got them

no need for egg crate put you rock in first and then add the sand so no way the rock can topple! good luck with the project

reply to KittyKat re one feed a day is all they should need to keep your fish in perfect condition nls food is a perfect balance of what malawis need i have been using this for 6 years feeding once a day with no issues and spot on condition fish
