What Is The Best Nitrate Concentration For Plants?

As long as nutrients aren't limiting there isnt really an optimum level. On a truly unlimited tank the maximum uptake of NO3 by plants is recorded at 20ppm a week. So as long as you are at say 25ppm, I wouldnt worry. Consistency is more important than aiming for an exact figure. If you got...

    Drop Checker. Color. Green?

How long has the tank been set up? Just trim the brown leaves off the water sprite, it will grow back, it can be common for plants to die off at first as they adapt. Aaron

    Drop Checker. Color. Green?

I'm guessing those kits want you to measure the tank water though? You need a pH and KH reference so you can work out the exact PPM value. If those kits want you to test the tank water then that is no good as it already contains other acids affecting the result. One could quite easily have tank...

    Drop Checker. Color. Green?

How much surface agitation do you have? It could be the lack of oxygen, ample surface agitation is required when running high CO2. A nice steady ripple across the waters surface is what I aim for What signs are the fish showing also? If the plants are showing a deficiency in carbon and you...

    Drop Checker. Color. Green?

Lime green is fine, that will be about 30-35ppm. I have pushed it into yellow before and so have others (which is about 40ppm) without any ill effects. But this depends on the setup tbh :good: A drop checker is a CO2 test kit? You test the pH and cross reference it to a known dKH (assuming...

Dosing Tpn+ - Suggest What Levels I Need

Sounds reasonable, stick to the manafacturers guidelines on carbon dosing, as it is toxic to organisms. People do dose 2x the recomended dose without any problems though; I have dosed 5ml on a 60l with shrimp (which are said to be the most affected) and everything was fine. It was a very fast...

Dosing Tpn+ - Suggest What Levels I Need

You are using easycarbo, techincally making your tank high tech so the values would be higher like someone who is using gaseous CO2 injection. You could start of dosing every other day and see how you get on, if any defficiencies show then start dosing daily. However, if your plants are...

These are the maximum uptake rates (based on a tank with no limiting factors): Nitrate (NO3) 20ppm per week/ 2.85ppm day Phosphate (PO4) 3ppm per week/ 0.43ppm day Potassium (K) 30ppm per week/ 4.29ppm day Magnesium (Mg) 10ppm per week/ 1.43ppm day 1ml per 20litres adds this: (Taken from...

If they need nutrients, they need nutrients. There is no way around it. Middle-back is the best place for them, usually so the leaves a springing out from the lower foliage but it doesnt hurt to be different!

To Wall Or Not To Wall?

no wall, looks too crowded IMO due to having the moss on the wood and with it being a small tank. A graduated blue background could look good. Aaron

Uv Bulb, Should I Use It?

You are correct in saying it destroys bacteria (harmful or not), but you also make it sound as though it kills the nutrients we dose which cannot be killed as they are not living... It can however break down the chelators but tbh it wont have a detrimental effect. I have used one in the past but...

Is It Ok To Run Filter-Less With Just Plants

filters filter out the wste in the tank, wether it be the sponges catching debris or the bacteria in the filter nitrifying ammonia. Powerheads are just a pump that creates extra flow within a tank. Let us know how you get on, as I'm sure you know though light + NH3 = algae. So if NH3...

    Pearling

There isn't a definite answer for this, but most would say it isn't exhaustion, but rather they are full! As soon as they have taken up enough CO2 the rate of photosynthesis drops, this is particularly noticeable in fine leaved stem plants such as myriophyllum and limnophila where they close...
  35. aaronnorth

    Pearling

The reaction for photosynthesis if it helps; 6CO2 + 6H2O => C6H12O6 + 6O2 (Carbon Dioxide + Water => Glucose + Oxygen) Now you can see why oxygen bubbles are produced. Plants are constantly producing oxygen as I'm sure you know, its just as said above, O2 is being produced faster than it can...
