How deep should I make the substrate?

Yes, I meant Embers. Autocorrect strikes again! The gravel is Dennerle shrimp gravel and is inert. Do you mean inches or cm?

How deep should I make the substrate?

I have come back to keeping tropical freshwater fish after a 2 year break. I have bought a 50L Dennerle Scaper's tank. I want to grow live plants and keep red cherry shrimp and amber tetras. Can you advise how deep I should make the substrate? I have bought some shrimp gravel but not sure how...

    Gravel Change Advice

Gravel changed with green neons and red cherry shrimps safely out of the way in a bucket with the heater. It all looks much better with dark gravel. The shrimp are particularly happy and now swim circuits when they are fed. They were always a bit shy before. Thanks for the helpful advice. I...

    Gravel Change Advice

Please could I get some advice in changing gravel in my Fluval Edge 23l. I have had it for about 3 years and I want to change from white to black gravel. Should I remove all the fish to change it or leave them in and work around them? I want to do the thing that will stress them least. As I...

    New Substrate For Shrimp

Thanks. Both interesting and helpful posts. I will probably go with black fine gravel then. Any idea how much i will need for my little tank? I have a couple of simple moss balls already. I know shrimps like java moss. Is it easy to grow? Do I have to do things with fertiliser and CO2?

    New Substrate For Shrimp

I have a Fluval Edge 23L with 6 green neons, an assassin snail and a male guppy. I would like to keep red cherry shrimps and live plants too. I have white gravel which is quite chunky. This looked stunning when I set up the tank but now has turned green and looks a bit tatty. I was thinking of...

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

I have just been looking at bigger tanks. I had to come home for a tape measure to see what I could squeeze in to my flat. My MTS seems to be progressing. I guess the biggest tank I can fit in is the best. Does anyone know if it matters if it is tall versus thin or wide and short? Or is it the...

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

You know what? I am gonna go with 2 tanks. A shrimp tank and a new big one. The only question now is ....... Is 90 L big enough or should I think bigger? I may need to go back to the tank showroom and rethink.

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

Thanks. To answer your question, yes my Endlers are all male as I didn't want to be overwhelmed with fry. They whizz around the tank in a little shoal and look beautiful. I had regular guppies before but had a heater failure and lost them. They were beautiful but very wriggly. They moved so...

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

OK. Thanks. I think I will either go with a bigger tank or scrub the dwarf gourami idea.

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

OK so I am still not clear if a 90L tank is or isn't too small for a dwarf Gourami. Could someone clarify?

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

Oh. So a 90L tank would be too small for a dwarf Gourami. Isn't 90L about 24 gallons? Perhaps my maths is wrong or is it to do with the length of the tank? Any suggestions for other fish for a 90L tank?

    Stocking A 60L Or 90L Tank

I have a 23 L fluval Edge but I want to get a bigger tank as I would like to move up to keeping larger fish. I have been keeping fish for about a year. I am considering the Fluval Roma 90L or the Arcadia 60L. I have 7 green neons and 3 Endlers, 2 red cherry shrimps and an assassin snail. I...

    Getting A Larger Tank

I have a 23L Fluval edge but I would like to keep larger fish and so I am thinking about a larger tank. I like the look of the Edge as the glass is joined together without black seams and I prefer that look. Are there any larger tanks with the same sort of look? I only have limited space for the...

    Fish Deaths

Help! My fish are dying. They look healthy enough and behave as normal. Then they disappear. I think the shrimps eat the bodies. I introduced 2 new guppies amonth ago. 1 died. 1 still alive. I have then lost my apple snail, 1 Endler and my best guppy- 2 in the last week. The Endler swelled up...

    Snail Help

I have a small tank (23L) and have live plants and moss with gravel and 3 guppies, 2 endlers and 2 cherry shrimp. All are well and thriving (apart from some of the plants, sadly). I have an increasing number of small black snails that have appeared. Where have they come from ( I rinsed the...

    Help! Filter Switched Off.

Oh dear. Help me please. After a 48 day fishless cycle I got 3 Guppies for my Fluval Edge tank. I fed them for the first time but the waterfall from the filter was spraying the food around and all over the gravel, so I switched it off whilst they ate but I FORGOT TO SWITCH IT BACK ON...

How Often Do I Test The Water?

I should have mentioned that I have done a fishless cycle and and finishing my qualifying week today. I have been testing the water once or twice a day but presumably I can dial that back a bit now I have grown the bacteria.

    Finally Cycled - Now What?

Hello all. I am thrilled that my Fluval Edge Tank is finally getting to the end of cycling. It is day 45! Probably slower as the fluval edge heater is not adjustable to go to a higher temperature. The tank sits pretty much at 24 degrees C. My ammonia is falling to 0 in 12 hrs and Nitrites to...

First Cycle- It's All Gone Green And Yucky

Thanks Biglan, GrayScale, roadmaster and Waterdrop. The tank is away from direct sunlight and windows, GrayScale. The worst bit of green is on the gravel below the lights so I guess that is why it has happened. Left the lights on too long. I will try reducing the dose of ammonia that I m...

First Cycle- It's All Gone Green And Yucky

Thanks Waterdrop and the biffster. I think I might try the blackout idea. If I do the blackout, how will I prevent the algae from coming back? Does anyone know if reducing the light time be enough? Will the fish eat it when I finally get to fish keeping rather than bacteria breeding? Anyone...

First Cycle- It's All Gone Green And Yucky

Thanks. I am adding ammonia up to 4 ppm daily and its dropping down to 0 in 24 hrs. NItrites still off the scale. Have just bought nitrate and ph testing. Will measure those later today. I will reduce the light time. Hope this helps.

First Cycle- It's All Gone Green And Yucky

I am doing my first ever fishless cycle. I set up my new tank and planted the gravel and have been proud of my efforts. Now the whole thing is turning green. It looks completely horrid. Choosing Fish For A Fluval Edge

I can see these tanks are a bit of a marmite tank (love 'em or hate 'em) but I need some advice about which fish to choose. I am doing a fishless cycle so I am window shopping for fish at the moment. It is 23litres or 6 Gallons. It is planted up but now covered in algae due to the cycling I...
