have you got plenty of hiding spaces in the tank? are you supplementing their food with algae wafers and foods like corgette and cucumber? what are your water stats?

are they active during the day? as i know many bottom feeders like plecs hide all the time. i think i might get a pair for my 4x2x2 planted. that will be about 23-24 degrees. with massive flow and filtration :lol:

old tank water IS benficial but not as much as old substrate and filter media. i akways use some old tank water and i have never had any problems or fatalities at all when moving fish accross. Bacteria stuff in bottles are snake potions. They dont really help and are a total waste of money...

best thing to do is dose using salts (the EI method) cheap as chips and you can put exactly what you want in, if you want more N, then put more into your mix. its fully customisable. you would be best of getting something like aquabasis or DRL akadama. if you get akadama just dose the water...

is the sand covered in algae? if it is i would suggest you address why it is there before it gets any further, it does detract from the scape, a whiter sandy 'path' would look better imo, and add some more light to the scape.

30 degress may be good for discus but its going to kill your cardinals for sure. Warmer temperates increase the eating 'need' in fish and will also dramatically shorten their life span. This is why alot of people keep a discus only tank.
