I noticed earlier this week that my Betta's tail looks 'fringed'. I'm not sure if he tore his fin on a plant, or if he has fin rot. I've included some pics, they aren't very good, but hopefully you can see what I'm talking about.
So, what's wrong with his tail, and what do I do about it.

Thanks

nice fighter you got there...mhm.....dosent look to mangled....probably just a few nips of some other fish....sure its nothing to worry about....just pay attention to other fish over the next few day....see if he gets more damage....

Thats what I was thinking. :stupid:

I gotta say, that looks nothing like a combtail to me. I saved the pics and zoomed in, and it looks like there's some red at the tips? If so, it is most likely finrot. How often do you do water changes, and how much water do you remove? Is the tank filtered? Are there any sharp decoration or plastic plants?
The best treatment for finrot, in my opinion, is to keep his tank really clean, add some aquarium salt, and medicate with Bettafix or a 1/4th dose of Melafix. That usually clears it up in a day or two and the fins can begin to heal :)

Edit: Just for the record Dwarf_Dude, with a first generation CT x plakat cross, you actually do get long-finned combtails

 Yikes!! I just checked his water - I don't usually because his water has always been really good and I do frequent water changes -- anyway, the Ammonia and NitrItes are high. :( There is a sponge filter in his tank and I use a plastic plant to hide it. I change about 50 percent of the water every 14 days. I just looked at his tail. There is some red, but it's hard to tell if it's part of his coloring or what.

For now I'm going to move him to a 1 gallon tank with fresh water - no plants. The filter won't fit in my 1 gallon, so I'll be changing the water a few times a week. I'm also going to order some melafix, and look for a silk plant to replace the plastic one.

Thanks for the help and any other advice you have for me will be very welcome! :)

My tailbiter's tail looks just like that. Perhaps this is the problem? The ammonia build up in your tank might be stressing him.

I do 50% weekly from my betta boys tanks (well only one tank currently since the other passed on recently) and they have approx 7.5g each.
Hugs,
P.
