Is it really necceassary to fit a coat on a small dog. I've never had a small dog before & always wondered why people fot coats to them. Surely if they weren't warm enough they would grow more fur??

Necessary? Possibly not. Cute? Absolutely.
Small dogs actually are a lot more cold-natured, just like us small humans are (I'm 5'3" and 98lbs myself, so I know!) so when temps begin to drop a coat really does help to protect them against the cold. It's especially important for short haired breeds.

When Buffy gets cold she shivers so i put her coat / jumper on her to keep her warm even though she is quite long haired. She dosnt mind wearing her coats at all, when we go out for a walk people always look at her and smile. I guess she is the trendiest dog in my neighbourhood.
