Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to this tropical fish stuff, been in it for about a 1.5 years. Started with a 10 gallon and quickly upgraded to my current 33 gallon, got into planted tanks (which the step im in) . I just feel that my tank isnt eye catching, the plants are pretty scattered around and it dosnt have a eye catching view i see alot ofother tanks have. Any comments and suggestions wouuld be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

In the tank i have:
1 Tiger Barb
1 Albino Barb
1 Green Barb
4 Rosey Barbs (2 and 2)
2 Corys
1 Bala Shark
1 Pleco
1 Flower Shrimp

I would recommend a black background. Lots more plants...I'm assuming you have low light, you could get anubias, java fern, java moss (to cover the wood). Maybe a bigger piece of bogwood for a centrepiece (positioned slightly to one side).

Put your thermometer on the side 'wall' or is the tank inbetween 2 walls?

Well i didnt think i had low light.. until i looked at your pic. I just bought a new canopy was like 50 bucks, i dunno what voltage it is...it's just 1 bulb. i just dunno how to position the plants and stuff..... (i have java moss coming from ebay, there are a couple java ferns in there)

In my opinion i think it looks pretty cool and it is already eye catching. I wouldn't do anything to it.

it's a 20W canopy and the light is a 17W
Does that mean you have a total of 37Watts over a 33 gallon? In planted terms that is low light, but that doesn't matter. You can still create a beautiful tank.

Anubias is a gorgeous plant I think and comes in different varieties. You attach it to wood as you do java fern. If you have a nice big piece of bogwood with lots of nooks you can place the anubias nana (small variety) in the nooks (tied with some thread till it takes hold). Just some ideas.

I can only echo want has been said. More plants and another piece of bogwood. Try getting some taller plants. Common hygrophillaand and curved hygrophilla grow well in my tank, and I only have 40watts in a 33gallon tank.

ok boys thanks for your input so far...

and now.. i am only running 17W in total... i bulb.

I'll go get black background and show you when i'm done todaya

Tanks nice, but some fish problems.... Tiger barbs are schooling, should have at least 6, cories prefer to be in groups of 3+, balas nare schooling and need a much much larger tank, pleco, if its common or sailfin it needs a bigger tank. I'm no expert on plants though so I can't help you there -_-

looks awesome with the dim light :) , you could have a lkoad more plants at the sides or back, a black background would look cool too.

But its really nice anyway

Nice little yellow guy you have there, I missed what he was..

looks good to me, I would just add some more plants.
here is a pic of mine, the quality of the pic isn't good, done with a palmpilot
lots of glare etc but you get the idea Set73_04.jpg

as per your PM

if you were to get the two 40 W HOP lights pumpin 6500k. that would give you 2.4 WPG (as opposed to 0.5WPG). with the addition of laterite (as per PM) you are good to go.

next would be diy co2.

if you do that lot then the skys the limit. your vallis will start to take over the tank and make a nice full curtain for the back and side. the other plants will green up and start to take off.

do that lot then come back and ask again. things will be very different.

as it is theres not a lot of scope for improvement apart from anubias etc... as the light will not be strong enough for eye catching plants.
