I purchased an orange telescope last year. He had black on the tips of his fins, and the cutest black lips (Reason I picked him) NOW all orange :/ I still love him though. Today, I saw black/white telescopes they called panda's. They were really cute. I want one, but anyone know if the color will change like my orange did?

Young orange telescopes like many young fish do have black that eventualy gives way to orange. Some black moors will do this as well.
As for panda telescopes these for the most part stay black and white. Of course nothing is guaranteed, but pandas will usually stay like that.
If a fish is labelled panda oranda then the colour wont last.

Fish changing colour is mainly defined by genetics. A lot of superstition is placed on what you can do to keep the colour, and from what I've read on thai and singapore forums they put a lot of confidence in "green water". From what I can gather, this is having a tank with wild algae growth of some nature. This isn't exactly ideal for home aquaria, and is mainly used for show fish.

However, I would imagine it to be luck of the draw. Recently I bought a small black ranchu. 1 Month on, he is almost totally orange. I have since purchased an older BR, and I'm hoping he will retain his colour, but I do think you draw straws with your goldfish, and sometimes they get the short straw, and sometimes you get the short straw. Good luck though, and let us know how you get on!

Furthermore, nothing is concrete

Here is a picture of the same blue oranda, a year apart -

Shocking.

wow, thats what you call a colour change!
I love it when they change colour, especially through the years.
Pretty fish :)

Me too, but being able to keep one the same colour throughout its life would be some feat!

I got a panda telescope last year, but he is now all white.

This is Pepe when he was a panda:

And this is Pepe now, all white!

I've heard that the older the fish is, the more likely it is to retain its color. I've also heard that "purer" strains of goldfish (ie expensive ones from a breeder) are more likely to retain their color. I've also read that light, water quality, food, temperature, pH, and even the amount of salt in the water can cause a color change!

Good luck!

Squeeker, thats is some impressive finnage.

I have had the same problem with 2 of my fish, one was bought as a Chocolate Oranda and was completely brown within 2months he has went totally orange. Also a gold oranda with very nice dark brown markings all over and he went complete orange over 3 months both are still small fish (only 1.5 -2").

I thought they were just losing their colour as they got older?!

i've never seen one... but i love the panda telescopes i've seen in pictures...

I've seen a few Panda's at the LFS but kept from paying their asking price (more than twice of an Oranda of the same size) they are nice "black and white" (for now). I just can't seem to drop the cash for one when I can buy two (or more) and not sure if the blood line is stable.

Like Squeeker's Panda I'd feel robbed when it went all white since most than likely I could've picked up more than just one fish for that price. But that's just me :/ . I'd drop the cash at a breeder or a good jobber who has a good source (not a Pet in a Box place that gets their fish from whoever) since they should be more in the quality control than just flipping and shipping.

Not that I don't pick up fancies at Pet in a Box or LFS (not a snob just picky) especially if I'm dropping $25/$30 for a 1.5" - 2" (so called) Panda which might turn in to a "White Out".

Sorry about Pepe Squeeker. Could the sbd have taken him?

I'm pretty sure that it was. He was fine (well, floaty as usual, but otherwise fine) one day, and then not eating, weak, and lifeless the next. I'm sure that whatever caused his SBD was from something mangled inside, and one day it just got so bad that he shut down. I'll miss the llittle guy!
