I agree it looks like some kind of rope fish. My lfs has a couple rope fish and they look pretty cool. To be honest though I don't know if I could stick my hand in a tank with them in it without being super creeped out

IMO it has very eel like attributes. The tail shows the same shape, the fins just behind the head. Just the head is a different shape from the "Spiney" variaty of eel. My guess is its some kind of eel but what i have no idea.
(Lets see if i can keep my 100% record of being totally useless) :S :p

:kewlpics:

EDIT:I would think this would be better off being posted in oddballs maybe. Im sure cfc would have a good idea what this is.

I would say that it is a freshwater eel (Anguilla).

From the pictures it has the wrong shaped face to be a spiney eel and the mouth slopes downwards a classic eel feature, the ropefish or snakefish mouth tends to slope upwards.

At a guess I would say a juvenille American eel (Anguilla Rostrata) or juvenille European eel (Anguilla Anguilla).

That would be a swamp eel most likely Synbranchus mamoratus also sometimes labelled as Tullip eel.

will grow to aorund 3ft and with it's powerful jaws kill and eat anything it can, also very good at escaping!

here's some pictures of 1 i had for a while until it got out the tank....

Yep, definately a tulip.
Fantastic creatures with a great prehistoric vibe.
I hope he doesn't have any small to medium fish in his tank that he values, that eel is very thin and he's going to be hungry!

I guess it came in with some tetras at the lfs and was there for about 6 months with another one. The other died and he took this one. They were feeding it brine and some type of flake. They said it hadn't grown much, if at all. (wonder why? They are feeding it flake) Thanks for the ID guys! I'll let him know.

He has it in his community tank which I told him last night wasn't a good idea, I didn't know what it was but I could tell it looked like it could eat some stuff.

It is a very nice eel. Althought I wont never keep one of them. I had one and he killed off almost my whole tank of mollies. Before I could ever catch him. I gave him to the lady at the fish store and he jumped out of her tank while she was selling a fish. I couldnt believe he passed away like that. I like your he is a nice looking eel.. :kewlpics:
