plants and lighting

Will plants with surface leaves (like tiger lotus & banana plants) or floating plants block the light from the ones in the tank that need higher light? I like the look of shadier areas, but I don't want it to kill the plants below. Here's a picture of my tank now, if this helps.

Floating plants will definitely block light. I like having shady areas too and I use wood and/or rocks in the shady areas rather than trying to grow something there.
