Its hard to tell from the pictures what that is , and its vital that you treat it correctly as if its not a fungus and you treat it as one, it could possibly make things worse, the white is by its eye? but does it look like its coming from its gills at all? has it stopped eating? if you have another tank with heater etc - I think u should seperate it from your other fish,b4 they become infected as well, and then do a pretty big water change every 2nd day for a while in their tank, if its fungus, boosting the temp and adding some salt should help, if its cottonmouth (columnaris)or something of the sorts, boosting the temp could make it worse, but salt will still help, advisably do some good research on this b4 you start treating - but quick!(chemical treatments can almost be the killers rather than the curers too.) I think it does sound like fungus though, knocking th temp and nadding some salt should get rid of it after a week or 2 :)

Goodluck, its sucks when fishies are sick :( :(

By the pics I'd say it is a fungus. white cottony stuff. I had an outbreak just like that in janes guppy tank after she added a new fish. I used melafix and it cleared it all up.

the fungus, since thats what everyone says it is, developed overnight. the fish died when i was at work today. i never had time to quarantine the fish. should i take out my other fish and completely take apart the tank? i dont have another tank with a heater, but i have a 5 gallon plastic bucket i could use temporarily

and no, the white stuff didnt seem to be coming from the gills. it started out right above the eye, and eventually moved up towards the top of the fish' head when it developed.

the water temp was at 80 degrees already. i have a black neon in the tank, so i can't add salt, right?
