I have had these fish for two years I rescued them from a puffer fish who had most of them for lunch. I have had people to tell me that this was too big for a fish like that I must admit I knew nothing about these fish when I got them. I just couldnt stand for them too be mistreated any longer....You should have saw them they had big hunks took out of their sides and all of the fins were gone. I doctored them back to health again. Now I am having another problem with one of them. I can't seem to get the swim bladder problem fixed. I have fed them peas but that isnt working. Are they anything else I can do????

He looks lovely, same problem with one of mine my husband bought me a oranda with swim bladder problems, unable to cure it just keep it under control with a good diet and plenty of peas, sorry.

wow they are big this is normal i think! If the temp is higher than normal or they r fed too much they can grow faster  they are lucky to ov been rescued!

Black Moors can get huge i have seen quite a few bigger than that, mines on its way there now he's simular sized and never stops looking for food  As for the swim bladder i'd keep on feeding the peas, also have you tried medication as a last resort as might clear it up as i know someone who used it and the fish hasn't had a bout of swim bladder since so might be worth considering to see if that helps any at all :)

ive seen one thats over a foot long.

I just thought about this topic. I was getting ready to start another one. I am having so much trouble with this fish. I cant seem to get it to swim straight no matter what I do..I have fed him peas and then let him got without food for a day. and just as soon as I feed him again he starts swimming on his side. Could some one please help me figure out what to do...

what do you normally feed him? if its anything like flakes then try him on sinking pellets. does he come up and grab air a lot? this can be a problem and not easily resolved.

Thanks Black Angel for all your help. It seems like the fish stays at the top of the tank. I feed him sinking pellets and also shrimp pellets. Please help me figure out what to do with him. He is worring me sick. This is worse that when I saved them from that puffer fish I was so mad at that puffer I could have flushed it with no problem. Then I got mad at the people who put the fish in with the moors. But that is just me..

it sounds like he is having problems deflating his swimbladder and theres a number of causes for this. he may have in the past got a viral or bacterial disease which is causing this trouble.
the only thing i can suggest is maybe geting his own 10 gallon or rubbermaid with an internal filter that can be laid on its side and lower the water to around 6 inches, this may help to ease the swimbladder for him.
i have heard of people using needles to either inflate or deflate the swimbladder, but this may be a bit extreme.
another is to try him on a home made diet. i will try and hunt down a recipe for you.

heres one, will look for more

http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/4468/recipes.html

heres another
1 Can - rice baby food jar
1 can - pureed baby apples food jar
cooked de-shelled peas and carrots
1 can sardines
1 clove of garlic
gel powder

use plain gelatine and you can add other veg like zuchini/courgette if you like and blend it all together. it can be frozen in an ice cube tray.

havent rried this myself as i no longer have any goldies but i am assured the fish love it.

hi blackangel I am so glad you are helping me with my moors! I am not holding muh hope for this male one. He is still hanging at the top and at looks as if he is trying to get air bubbles all the time.. I tried this one
1 Can - rice baby food jar
1 can - pureed baby apples food jar
cooked de-shelled peas and carrots
1 can sardines
1 clove of garlic
gel powder

and he still doesnt seem to be doing very well. The other one is doing great on this... If you have any more ideals as to what I can do for this fish please let me know....

sorry he isnt getting any better.
ok then back to the drawing board!
have you got any test results for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and ph. maybe that might give us a clue.
constipated fish can swim awkwardly as well, have you noticed him poo recently and if so what did it look like?
eating bubbles may be a sign of something wrong with the gills that hes trying to clear. see if you can see in them when hes breathing and see what colour they are. a healthy gill is cherry red.
is there enough oxygen do you think in the tank? is there a bubbler or anything agitating the urface of the water?
another thing is filtrtion, these fish are really messy and ned a filter that turns over 10x in every hour.
10 gallons at least for each fish too.

lastly when hes swimming can you see any lumps, bumps or uneveness in the tummy area?

starve him for a few days and see if that helps.

The fishs stomach does look a little uneven on one side. But as for him being constipated they are doing just fine in that area. Lets see the Nitrate is 10 ppm. And the nitrite is 0 and the ammonia is 0. And the filter is one of them double filters that pump a lot of water. But this makes me feel stupid I cant think of the name of it at all. The gills look ok to me atleast they are red and very red at that. I keep the ph on the moors at around 7.8 all the time.

hi
sorry for jumping in but i thought i could help you.i had a moor that had swim bladder problems really bad and he was all bent and would float belly up and be blown all around the tank anyway i tryed everything and i mean everything even asking the vet if he would treat my fish,,and you know what cured it,i starved him for 5 days i know it was hard to do and i felt really sorry for him and kept imagining him being hungry, but i starved him for the full 5 days and on day 6 i gave him squashed up peas, but just a little, and now hes fine apparently you have to let the stomach completely empty so theres no pressure on the swim bladder, and it worked for me,i stopped feeding him floating pellets and starting feeding them flake i get a big pinch and hold it under water then let it go,so it sinks,i also give them the cat fish pellets the sinking ones they have a orange lid and a picture of a goldfish on the front although it says catfish pellets!!!i also give them lettuce and seaweed sheets, since doing this ive had no swimbladder problems
heres my baby as you can see hes very large hes about 10 inch now
