Hi! Today I returned the Chinese algae eater to the lfs and got another algae eater B) , they called it a Butterfly plec (with a scientific name as Beaufortia spp.), said it'll grow to 5cm, requires high O2 level.

When I checked on my books and websites, the scientific name of Butterfly plec is not what stated in the lfs, but Peckoltia pulcher. Colour, pattern not same as the picture in the book too! Now I'm confused. :S  -_-

Can u tell me what kind of fish I've got? Thanks!

Here's the 2nd picture so u can try and see the back. Sorry bad quality as it's at the side of the tank that's not enought lighting...

Anyway I think it's a Butterfly loach instead of a plec. What do u guys think?

I have two to those myself..
They aren't Plecos, they're loaches.. 'Butterfly Loach' , or 'Hillstream Loach'
For more info -
Hillstream Loach

Good luck with the new fish! :)

Cheers Limpingfish!

From what I read, they can live in either cold/tropical water. Does that mean they can't live at high temp like 80-82F? (coz I have to get rid of the ich from other tankmates)

feline, I'd put them in another tank until at least 3 weeks after your ich problem is resovled. If you put them in during treatment, they may get ich themselves or die from stress of the move, compunded by high temps and medication.

I have them for about 2.5 monthes now, and they live just fine on a temp of 28c-29c, But, i've heard that they can't survive in water hotter than 31c..
Maybe you should put them in another tank 'till the ich is gone, just like Tankes said.

Cheers guys! I'll put it in my quarantine tank later on tonight!

And thanks for retouching the picture, tanked! Brings out the colour and contrast! B)

They dont like higher temperatures for long periods, they come from mountain streams which although are in tropical countries are quite cool, temps need to kept between 22 and 24 dgc and need to be high in oxygen with a good current, they also cannot survive on a algea diet alone and need to be given meaty foods at least once a week.

Oh I'm sorry for ur loach, Limpingfish! :( :X

I have an air curtain at the back of the tank. And I've increased the air from the air pump to the air curtain. Could this create more oxygen and stronger current?

Since my hillstream loach is living with other tankmates that feed on fish flakes, sinking food and algae wafers, will the loach be getting the food as well? Usually the loach likes to stuck on the glasses, so will it get enough food to eat?

This is my tank:

The air curtain will help with the oxygen but will not supply a current,if you can try to get a small power head to push the water around abit, you will not be able to create a current as strong as the sucking loach would like because of the other fish but some is better than none.
To suplement their diet try small pieces of prawn, mussel or fish placed in the tank just before you go to bed, just remember to remove any uneaten food in the morning.

Thanks for the tips CFC! The tank has an internal filter (Fluval Biolife) and it's got a power head. I've now turned the pump to the max to let more water out from there. Hope the current will b strong enough!

i think that fish might look nice in a tank with white cloud mountain minnows as they don't mind lower temperatures
