i was on aquabid and looking at some giant plakats for sale and this was the info that was posted. from reading some posts here i was under the impression that the giant gene was not completely dominant and the 100% giant would be 7 inches. this seller is claiming that a 3-4 inch betta is 100% giant....hmmm....i am confused and have just started learning about betta genetics. i am going to look for the previous posts about the giant genotype, but if anyone can help my cnfusion, please let me know!

Giant Plakat Pair. Male is already 4"-4.5" (male giant/female giant). Never been spawned. 4.5 months old.

Giant gene information for breeding

Giant 25% breed with Giant 25% will produce the maximum sized Giant 50% in (F1)
Giant 50% breed with Giant 50% will produce the maximum sized Giant 75% in (F2)
Giant 75% breed with Giant 75% will produce the maximum sized Giant 100% in (F3)
Giant 25% breed with Giant 75% will produce maximum sized Giant 100% of the time
Giant 100% means the body is about 3.5" long
Giant 87.5% means the body is about 3" long
Giant 75% means the body is about 2.75" long
Giant 50% means the body is about 2.45" long
Giant 25% means the body is about 2.3" long
(This data represents maturity and is approximate)

I got my giant plakat too from that seller. Blueusabetta. :) If I am right, they talk about the halfmoon giant including a long tail that up to 7". Then it make more sense. :)

Look at this one. Only 50% geno giant. He is big.

i got this from jim sonnier's website, by my understanding this is a contradiction of what i found on aquabid! :p

quote:
At the Orlando IBC Convention in June, 2002 several very large Bettas were shown in class G4, Form and Finnage. There were two about 7 inches long and three or four about 3.5 inches long. Gene Lucas called the larger ones, "Two-pounders!" A couple were long-finned but most of them were short-finned Plakats. The picture above shows the 3.5 inch one I purchased at the auction after the show.

I spawned him to a regular sized Plakat female (spawn#111002) and was rewarded with about 50% Half-Giants (3.5 inch) and about 50% regular sized offspring. Some photos of the offspring can be seen here.

Interestingly some of the Half-Giant offspring showed early rapid growth while only a couple looked normal until about 8 months of age and then had a growth spurt to Half-Giant size. All, however, had voracious appetites and ate much more food than their regular sized siblings. Some of the fully grown Half-Giant offspring are shown below.

Based on my limited observations to date I am thinking that the Giant condition is controlled by a single pair of mutated genes. It appears that offspring receiving both Giant genes from their parents should grow to about 7 inches in length. And it follows that heterogeneous offspring receiving only one Giant gene from their parents should grow to a length of about 3.5 inches. See the table below for expected results from spawnings with Giant Bettas.

Giant Spawnings (projected) male parent female parent offspring
Giant(7") Giant(7") 100% Giant(7")?
Giant(7") Half-Giant(3.5") 50% Giant(7"), 50% Half-Giant(3.5")?
Regular Size(2+") Half-Giant(3.5") 50% Regular Size(2+"), 50% Half-Giant(3.5")
Half-Giant(3.5") Half-Giant(3.5") 25% Giant(7"), 50% Half-Giant(3.5"), 25% Regular Size(2+")?

end quote

these giants make the other bettas look like little dwarfs!! they are beautiful fish though!

7 inches betta is 2 lbs? You thought fat gold fish huh? LOL Even 7" fat gold fish don't weight for 2 lbs. LOL I think they are talking about the halfmoon unless I saw in my eyes that the body is 7" long. :)

I saw that one too. Aren't they are pretty? You want a giant now? :) LOL You want my giant plakat?:)

LOL no i am not in the market for a giant, but i like looking at all the beauties on AB! i have to wait for the weather to warm up before i get more tanks...the only place i have to expand into is my unheated porch...although i do have a shelf on the bookcase that holds my supplies...i could fit a few bettas there....

seriously, though, if anyone knows more about these genetics, i am just curious...i am a science-dork. (studied lots of human anatomy/physiology but not too much for fish)

I don't think gaint genetics have been nailed down yet. I do know that according to Jim Sonnier, and other research I have done on gaints, the information Jim posted is correct as I have found because it matches other gaint info I have found on other Thai sites. You can visit www.nicebettas.com, where Yeevia posted some pics of and they have gaint genetic info, along with the other gaint founder, Thai Gaint Betta http://www.geocities.com/thaigiantbetta/index

Don't believe everything they sell on Aquabid, or some sellers out there.

Here is an excerpt from Nicebettas web on Gaint Bettas: (Hope this is okay)

Giant Betta

In the end of 2001 when we went to the fish breeding farm of Khun Lung we were very surprised with the giant Betta there. It was Over four inches long and was beautiful and strong. Mr.Sala and Mr.Nati
Ratanapichet are the ones who have bred this fish. We decided to buy and breed this fish from them starting last May and now we have them to sell. The giant Betta is easy to care for. grows quickly, eats well, and in Thailand has been developed to be very beautiful. The care is the same as other Bettas. Mr. Sala has also developed HM, CT, Copper and many other strains. To paint a picture as these grow to a large size they will be worth a lot. We hope that you'll will have the opportunity to experience this too. A little more about the Giant Betta The Giant Betta is a strain of Betta Splendens that is twice long as normal and weights 5 times as much as normal This strain can also be used to improve the size of Betta Imbellis, Betta Smaragdina. It has been developed by the Ratanapichets since 2000 at their farm at: 7/2 Muu 7 Tambon Khlongsong Amphoe Khlongluang Patumthani 12120
The Giant Bettas grown incredibly fast.
- 3 months - 3-4 centimeters long
- 6 months - 5-6 centimeters long
- 9 months - 7-8 centimeters long

When full grown they can reach 10 centimeters from head to tail The personality of the Giant Betta is the same as a regular Bettas except it's a little harder to breed.
From a male and female Giant Betta only about 10-30 percent of the spawn will be Giant. When breeding a Giant Betta with a normal betta the F1 spawn will be larger than normal but not more than 7
centimeters. F2 will have about 10% larger than 7 centimeters and F3 will have about 30% largern than 7 centimeters (when F2 and F3 are bred from the largest of the previous
spawn)
